It is if you join HMRC. If you go into the uniformed side you can annoy the hell out of people by stopping them after a 22 hour flight and detain them indefinitely while you check for illegal importations.

Or you can be a VAT inspector [as I was] and bill people who have been cheating for years. And if you go into fraud work, you can kick their doors in at 6am and seized all their records and computers. And listen to numerous conversations confirming what you already know - Customs DO have more powers than the police.

Or you can stop lorries under this new regime they were bringing in. Stop vans and check for diesel.

Or you can go after the labour gang masters which is in our remit.

Plenty of scope for excitement in Customs :P

I'm looking for a career any one got any suggestion's of jobs to do and jobs not to do from experience.

Not really going to help you. But try and find a job you like the sound of. Something that you think you want to do as a career. Find out more about it do some research find out what the pay is like and can you afford to live , do the things you wanna do in your spare time and then pick that job.

I work in I.T. I really enjoy it. But you might not. The hours can be long and I have to do 24/7 on call one week in every four. Being phoned up by work at 3 in the morning isnt the most enjoyable experience. Often I have to work out of hours at weekends and evenings so I can do maintenance etc etc so it can disrupt my social life sometimes. Working on a IT Helpdesk is the most thankless task you can ever do IMHO. I really wouldnt recommend that.

However, the pay is good for what I do now. Its always challenging and I never get bored. Often I'm faced with situations where something is broken and I don't know how to fix it so I have the challenge of working out whats wrong and putting it right. Which for me I really like. Plus the fact I've worked up through the food chain as it were and now I dont have to work on the helpdesk I get to design & deploy new software and hardware. The biggest thing I've done was to roll out Windows 2000 remotley across two buildings ( approximately 700 PC's ), I also got to setup the software infrastructure that ran one of warehouses that dealt with approx 5000+ parcels a day.

I'm currently managing 3 data centres and am responsible for ensuring that every runs smoothyl and helping to plan an installation of 2.5 million pounds worth on Sun Solaris hardware. Also I am managing moving 50 odd PC''s and associated gubbins 10 miles from one warehouse to another in Swindon.

I get ADSL at home that work pay for and also a laptop that I can use when I'm at home for personal use. This is so I can dial in when I'm on call.

You know theres a website with OGD vacancies on dont you? If you dont and are interested Ill find the link.

Ps. Insolvency service is quite fun too. If youre an Insolvency Practitioner you can upset people just as much as we can when you work with us. As one of my visits has transpired. Someone is under the impression we cant touch them - limited liability etc. And that they can move the money offshore.

Its help from the IP means that a. they are now personally liable for the debt and b. we can go after their offshore accounts in the Channel Islands and Carribean. :D

1) Challenge

Ah but it took me 10 years before I started earning decent money. You have to be prepared to work for it. Theres no point looking for jobs that pay decent money if you don't have any experience in the industry you want to work in. You wont get an interview. Trust me I know. Sometimes I do the interviewing. I would rather employe somebody with 2 or 3 years field experience than Graduates with degree's but its all book based learning and they dont actually know how to do the basic stuff. Also it comes down to personality, will they fit within the team of people I already have. I'd rather get a good personality fit and then spend sometime giving training than employing the best person I can find knowing that he / she is going to cause friction within the team or general behave like a moron.

If you want to get into IT go and learn the basics and spend some time on a helpdesk. It will stand you in good stead. But its f*cking boring and soul destroying.

I'll try, but I'll wager your IT department is run by a moron who thinks he / she knows better than the staff they have working for them and tell them how to do their jobs all the time.

I would also wager the system you have now, the people that actually use it had no input whatsoever in the design stage. So know you have something that you didnt want, was expensive and is horrible to use and actually is a pain in the bum

You're spot on there mate!

You don't know them do you?

It was designed exclusively by GEDAS,with absolutely NO input from other Garage's whatsoever!

We had the system put in over 2 years ago now,and they STILL have to come down to sort it out and re-train the people who have to use it!

Luckily I don't have to use it much as I'm a just a Tech, but the problem we have at the 'blunt-end' of the Garage is that it causes no-end of problems with stock monitoring,job/vehicle history etc etc...So it makes EVERYONES life that much more difficult, which in turn affects the profit of the company, whick in turn affects my bloody wages!!!

:laughat: :stupid:

Its all good until you start doing real IT work and not supporting users where your supporting the infrastructure, like if you make a mistake you might loose Europe, or japan off of your network. I'm so busy at the moment i don't have time to take a **** let alone surf the web all day.

Does IT pay well? Well that depends, it beats working in a shop, or going to work in a factory, if you can just do it 8hrs a day.

But with the pay comes the responsibility of potentially loosing the business millions of pounds if you make a mistake, and it's not unreasonable to be called up on your mobile phone, any day of the week, at any time, even if your not on call, should the problem be that severe.

You have to study in your own time for work projects to be able to implement them, and keep on top of new technologies that may be relevant to your job, area of "expertise".

Suddenly your 35hr week looks more like a 40+hr week in general and maybe more over the year depedning on how bad your are at making your stuff stay up and working. Plus buying your own study material, etc, etc..Not as rosy as it initally sounds.

Think carefully before moving into IT, unless you just want to install Windows all day. But it can be a good job, if your a geek.

Dan

Just a thought, study the legal profession, they always seen to do OK. Wish I'd done that. Just dull for me though. Beware that some aspects that are now being out sourced though.

I.T. can be interesting although the last two companies that I worked for now out source most of the software engineering to lower cost centers i.e. China and India. Some clever people out there. Infrastructure is still good here though as Fizz states and that can pay well. Be prepared to move for the best pay.

I've been a tech for many years and had a lot of fun doing it. I've finally got the break now to do something else.

Good luck!

Listen to ED-----Get into something you are interested in and keen on whatever the pay is like. There will always be opportunities for betterment later, but there is nothing worse than getting stuck in a career path that you hate every minute of.

Also try to look ahead ten years. Will your chosen career still exist by then?A lot of IT jobs will emigrate to India and other cheap labour areas over the next few years,as will any job that is done entirely over the phone or internet.Looking back, who would have thought in 1979 that their chosen job in the coal industry would be history within ten years?Plenty of other examples of that throughout British industry so beware the "safe job".

I had no idea what to do for around 5 years after leaving high school - i had rubbish advice though and 0 role models to work with. I eventually went travelling as it was the only thing i was interested in doing - best education ever as it opened horizons to the rest of the world. Some advice I wish i had back then though:

You need to think of where you want to be in 2/5/10 years ect - set some personal goals.

Make a plan of how you are going to get to that first goal - then do something about it so you can tick it off.

Find some mentors - people who you want to be like and find out all about them. How they got there, what makes them tick etc.

If I was starting over again, and I couldnt be a bioinformatician/linux sys admin/programmer type... I would be, either a landscape gardener OR a silver smith. Or a stone mason maybe.

I really liked doing fine metal work when I was in school. And, I was actually quite good at doing and planing big gardening things.

The whole white collar blue collar thing means nothing now in terms of money. In Ireland and the US anyway.
But that's just me. I find computers, biology, and that sort of stuff interesting. I have the privalage to work in this area. Pick somehting you like, and worm your way in there, work for half nothing, get good.

Same as everyone else is saying really I suppose. You could make loads of money being a plasterer. Then spend your free time doing something really cool, like, em, I dunno. Drugs maybe.

Choose something that you can do anywhere, in case you get bored with England. I wish I had a skill that I could use somewhere else. Have often toyed with the idea of living someplace else (if they'd have me) but I'm qualified in England and Wales only and i couldn't work in say NZ without a lot of retraining.
