Hey all,

So here are the quiestions.

1) what is the best cleaner for chain and prockets?

2) What is the best chain lube? (beyond scott oiler, which is comnig soon)

Cheers and football beers.

PJ1 is a good chain lube. I also found shell chain wax to be quite good.

How does old engine oil work though exactly? Surely the idea behind changing the oil in your engine is that the old oil is losing it's lubricating properties? :?

I've been using Profi Dry Lube for about a year now.
Virtually no flick off and my chain still seems in pretty good shape.

Need the chain to be pretty much spotless before you start with it though.

as sugested..parafin or what ever you wanna call it
good old scrub with an old tooth brush and then soak a rag in it and wipe all over
dont get it on your tyre tho as its very slippery stuff.
let it dry naturaly then wipe over with a dry cloth.
DONT do what i did and buy the motorax electronic chain oiler like i did its very awkward to fill and messy to boot..save your money up and get a scottoiler you cant beat them

the good thing about parafin is that if you mix it with washing up liquid this makes a cheap fantastic de-greaser

Its not that the oil loses it's lubricating properties,it's the fact that MOST modern oils contain detergents that 'clean' the engine as it goes around it,therefore picking up and holding any contaminants/dirt etc.

That being said, the oil will have contaminants in it,if you could filter it sufficiently, you could run it again!

It probably would be ok for Chain use.

I use Wurth chain wax,NO fling and good stuff,no noticeable wear yet!

Chains don't really need much added lubrication as they have grease held in their bearings from new.The O rings are there to seal this grease in,and it is these that you are lubing,in order to prevent them drying out and letting the grease out.Hence any old lube will do just as long as there is some lube there at all times.
Old engine oil is still good oil, just not good enough to use in the engine, but the chain is a wholly different environment, and is not as choosey.

Not fully sure of the diffs but parasene burns at a much hotter temp than paraffin, found this out when it melted the welds on a paraffin lamp
