So we have electrical engineers working in our offices this weekend. As I am in charge of all contractors, it was for me to organise the power outage required for the works to take place.

I thought I had all things covered.

Spoke to the contractors and ensured they knew what time to be at work and what they were to do.

Organised someone to be in both Sat and Sun* to open the offices and get access to the building, office and secure comms room.

Spoke to the on site work services people and made sure I had access to the electrical riser where the distribution board was located.

Surely this was all angles covered :?:

Well the electrical contractors turned up this morning to commence works and switched the power off to the distribution board, then all the fire alarms in the building activate. In next to no time there is a swarm of fire engines and firemen piling into the BT exchange car park getting ready to break down doors and put out the fire. :smt102

I had forgotten to inform Monteray (the building custodians), therefore the fire alarm system had not been deactivated. This particular distribution board powered the fire alarm system for the whole building. #-o

*It is I that will be working tomorrow. Double time of course. I wonder how much the fire brigade will be charging BT for the false call out :?: I also wonder if my Sunday working will be for zero pay.

If it's the first time I think you may find no charge from the Fire Brigade...

Good luck!

What? No battery back-up on the fire alarm system?

Does this mean that every time there is a significant dip in supply all the alarms go off? You have made a significant discovery for the buildings custodians and deserve a pat on the back!

When you go into work on Monday and the boss shoots off you reply, "Well, I naturally assumed that the fire alarm was compliant with the current British Standard!" If the boss is stupid enough to question your sanity, or knowledge you can say, "BS 5839 quite clearly requires an uninteruptable power supply, For property protection, if the mains failure is immediately recognised, a standby duration of 24 hours is required, if not the required duration is 24 hours longer than the building may remain unoccupied, For life protection, a standby duration of 24 hours after the fault is detected is required. AND what is more, the same standard states that the system MUST be routinely maintained by a competant person."
The alarm should recognise the outage, but jst report it as an outage, but continue to work normally.

Boring git aren't I?

Sorry the best is either the Naval or dress uniform of US Air Force test pilots :smt118 .(they have to be seen to be believed. Girls I'll get photos sure I've got some somewhere.)

Firemen - suppose so but my bro one doesn't hold anything for me anymore :(

Ape......

....sounds like my job too mate. Only thing is mate I'm quite into the whole fire & fire safety thing, so i'd have checked. I'd just have cocked up on something else instead!

Well girls - as mentioned above, I'm sure I've got a couple of outfits somewhere but what does it for you...............

1) 90s Style Blues with traditional shape helmet.
2) Current style "Golds" with funky (tres expensive) gold plated heat shield visor
3) Obsolete (80s 90s) stand down dress uniform with cap etc

I detect a certain parallel to the SV650 pageant/calendar thread starting!

I don't think so. The whole building is generator backed. However, when you manually switch a distribution board off. Does not matter where the power comes from, it isn't going to supply that distribution board. So although your comments could have got me out the proverbial, in this instance I don't think it will.

the last time the toaster set of the fire alarms at work, it happened quite a lot we were told it cost the hospital £300.01 £100 for each fire appliance and 1p for the slice of bread
