Similiar story... Many moons ago, the Wildhearts (a band) wrote a song called Geordie In Wonderland. They send it to Kevin Keegan, in the hope that he'd adopt it as a club song. Time passes, and the lead singer gets a letter.

"Dear Ginger,

thanks for sending me this CD. We'd consider using it as an official club song, but unfortunately, I thought it was rubbish.
