View Full Version : Scooby Drew - Off!
Just had a call from Drew who had an off today. He was on the back road from Gala to Lauder and apparently went into a lowsider after clipping the grass verge.
Some helpful folk lifted him back on and he rode the other 5-10 miles home at which point he decided it would be a good idea if his neighbour would give him a lift to the Borders General Hospital!
He's managed to break five ribs but other than a stiff shoulder that appears to be the full extent of the damage. His Kwak has some major fairing damage as well as the usual bits 'n' pieces of damage (bugs, etc.), but he's at least proven it's ride-able!!!
He's in good spirits, but that's probably because they're keeping him in overnight and it's an opportunity to chat up some nurses!
I'll post any updates as I get them.

Get better soon Scooby.
My ribs were agony for 3 days after my off & I struggled to sleep for that time. And thats without even breaking them, just very bad bruising. Even sitting down & getting up again were sore.
Quick recovery for you buddy.

Just off the phone... Drew's still in Borders General (we got through a whole conversation with me thinking he was home, but he was kept in... Should be out tomorrow. If anyone is planning to go down (he sounded fit enough but in pain from teh shoulders and ribs) I've got his actual name but not ward details or anything- PM me or call me on 07796 896173- don't know if he'd want the details on teh forum. But it sounds like he's doing OK.

26-06-06, 06:13 PM
Aye I have just spoken to him as well.
He is in ward 7 but visiting finishes at 8PM and as he will be out tomorrow (hopefully) it shouldn't be necessary for visitors.
He is keeping up his high spirits and was even talking about still coming to AR06 if he can get a pillion ride  I suspect that that is more wishfull thinking though !!

I was the same- but with me, it was because I was pretty fragile, the less it hurts the more likely you are to do something daft I think. If they're worried about Drwe puncturing a lung they won't want to reduce his awareness of that I think...

That's the downside of not being a shandy drinking soft southerner. They think he don't need pain killers and being a ruffy tuffy northern type he don't know how to whinge properly.

Thanks guys, your wishes are greatly received. Not sure where to start except to say that I am a tw@ - it was my fault, I was on a road that I know very well and got cocky and got it wrong - that and I hate right handers... Was very lucky cos where I went wide, the grass was only 2 foot wide with a stone wall behind it  The bike hit the grass and I hit the road. At about 60mph - I was toes down already so it was a very short trip...
The nice folks that I had just ****ed past stopped and were genuinely concerned (was expecting them to give me an earful) They asked me if they could call an ambulance. I said 'Just hang on' and lay down in the road for 20 seconds to get my breath back, then got up and asked them to pick the bike up and hold it for me so I could jump on 8) They were very nice and followed me home  Luckily my neighbor was out front so once I managed to prise myself off the bike I asked him to take me to the hospital.
The folks at the hospital were nice and the doc congratulated me on my full gear. He said that if it wasn't for my back protector, I would have been seriously f%$*d
To paraphrase Big Ape 'Always wear yer ferkin leathers and yer ferkin back protector!'
It doesn't hurt that much any more, it's just an annoyance cos I can't lift stuff etc. I asked for the x rays so I could show off my injuries but they would give them to me :(

I take it that's you home then?
IIRC< NHS policy is if you apply in writing you can get copies, but they're allowed to charge you. I keep on meaning to get copies of mine.

Yes, just got in. The doc said that I could go once I had been x rayed and it looked ok. That was at 9.30 this morning. They got round to doing the x ray at about 3pm and the doc eventually looked at it at 6pm  It all came to a head when I refused to eat my dinner   The nurse said 'It's not my fault that the doc is busy...'

You could always get them to pop the xrays on a light box and take piccies with a diggie camera. That's what I did when I bust my back. You have to have a memento of these things IMO!

Tell me did they have the obligatory psyhco in your ward?
They had one in mine when I was in there and there was one in the ward at the Queen Margaret in Gary's ward this evening. I think it must be a compulsory NHS requirement or something.

What me slow down? Nev... well perhaps. I am mostly sensible these days, just not on the day I fell off :( :D
I don't know, he was talking about getting a sensible old man's bike the other night. Mind you, I think you said that before you got the Ninja, didn't you? :)
I do so many miles that I really need something a bit more sensible and less likely to bite back. Riding at 60 mph in second on a road 1 1/2 lanes wide using the throttle as an on/off switch is very rewarding when you get it right, but needs a lot of attention and I just proved that, like a stupid dwarf, it's not big and it's not clever when you muck up. If I had a bike that wasn't really made for that kind of behaviour, I probably wouldn't try it  and stay out of trouble (mostly)
And if you are going to try it for the nurses, don't - they were a dissappointment 8)
Thanks for all of the wishes guys - broken ribs seems to be a recurring theme here. Today is a bit 'gruelling' to say the least :(
