So, I'm looking to do my car license this year... I wonder though, do I need to apply for a provisional even though I'm a full licence holder? Do the theory test? Or does my existing license bypass all of that?

Unless things have changed your existing license is a provisional car license, but you will need to do the car theory test.

AFAIK just book and pass your theory test. It's easier than doing a bike test, no CBT.

Should be easy for you because you've already got your road skills with riding a bike just don't blip the accelarater on the down shifts when taking your test

Yeah, I think it should be realtively straightforward, just decided I should actually find out a wee bit about doing it :)

Why not, I do when I'm driving. Heel and toe give a smoother down shift in a car just like it does on a bike. 8)

I'm probably after a 16V Mk 2 Golf GTI... Insurable, just ;) And it will, I think, be just a wee bit chavvy. Just a wee bit.

(I really want a Mk 1, but it'd be a crime to let me loose on one of those. Or a Bug, but as much as I love them, they're rubbish. I really want a Capri, but it wouldn't fit in the space in the driveway...

That was 14 years ago I still miss it and would love another one :D

Might as well.........no chance of wheelies or stoppies (although I've always thought it should be possible to stoppie a Smart car  ).

Hmm....is that a good idea

Are you doing a proper license or just Auto ? .

First car was 1. something metro  . Sold it two weeks later for £150 profit after realising I'd made a mistake. Talk about a lucky escape.

Proper license... Part of the reason a Golf appeals is that if I get a stock one, I'm not neccesarily going to **** with it :)

I had a 2.8 Capri a couple of years ago, it was brilliant, fair enough it did 18 mpg and scared me stupid in the wet but i loved it. then i got a Mk2 Golf GTI, that was fantastic. ive still got a set of BBS RM's (split rims) for the golf on my garage for sale. Fantastic car though

Northy, I have just done my test after 2 years on the bike. You do the theory and then get some lessons. When you feel you are ready you book your test.

In some senses it's a lot easier because you already know roadcraft/signs etc. In other ways it's not easier because you'll do

blind spot checks all the time
you'll want to go for gaps you can't make for lack of acceleration, or can't fit into
you'll have less visibility (a frame pillars)
you'll have to learn all those pesky manouvers (using reverse gear!)
you'll be paranoid about moving left or right for fear of knocking a bike over!

However, the sooner you do it, the better.

good luck!

Ok: I recently did my car test after being on a bike for ten years. if you have a full bike licence from before (I think) 1997 (but don't quote me on that) then you do not need the theory test. Ask DVLA coz chances are your driving instructor won't know, mine didn't and tried to get me to resit the stupid bloody thing, but then chances are that DVLA may give the wrong advice too...

Best advice I got was from talking to one of the bike examiners at me local test centre when I went there to look around on my first or second lesson.

From what I remember of the theory test it's a piece of the provebial anyway, isn't it? "Does a 30mph sign mean maximum speed is thirty, minimum speed is thirty, or maximum speed is 30mph + 10%"

Everyone knows that a thirty MPH sign is like the pictures on fish finger packets: a serving suggestion, not necessarily what you get when you open it up... :)

Have had my car license since I was 18 and just don't have the patience anymore. You can't overtake or do anything
