After having had an excellent week, spending a day at the Ron Haslam Race school followed by a Track day at Brands Hatch, I've started to think that getting into some sort of racing would be a fun thing to do.
I've still got limited experience when it comes to Track Days/Racing but intend to do more track days over the summer. Question is how do you get involved at racing, any involvement in racing would still have to be at a relative novice level due to my lack of experience. Does anyone know of any race meets or anything like that, any help would be much appreciated!

I'm in the same boat as you, done a race school and fancy a go at racing but are relatively inexperienced.

MRO have a "Rookie 600" class.

I know there are quite a lots of peeps on here that do race, so there should be some good advice to be had.

First you'll need an ACU licence so get hold of them and they'll send you some info about what you can do. Best bet probably for starting out is to choose a class like Minitwins where the rules are pretty tight so the budgets are kept low - then someone won't be lowing you into the weeds just cos they've got an extra few grands' worth of tuning under their ass. After that, get a van and the gear and I guess dip your toe in! There are a few racers on here, see if you can hook up with them and go to a few meets over the summer to get a feel for it.

Your first decision is which class you fancy racing in.

After you have done that, you need to have an idea of/calculate your budget and plans. i.e. if you plan just to hit it for one season, you can go a bit mad financially, if you are planning to do it for the foreseeable future, maxing out your credit cards on day1 probably isn’t the best idea!! :lol:

You could get yourself to a meet and walk round the paddock asking questions. This is a great idea in theory, but to be honest, you would need to pick your time and person to do this. People get pretty wrapped up in what they are doing at race meets.

Visit http://www.motoforum.net/ that is a forum used by race clubs, put you post on there and ask questions. Being a forum, you are obviously not going to risk accidentally interrupting someone when they are having a race crisis like you might at a meet!! :lol:

You might want to get some idea of your pace too. What group were you in at the trackday?? and where would you say you were?? If you are comfortable in a fast group, then you are probably ready to think about racing, if you are wobbling round in the beginners or inters, it might be a better idea to get more tracktime first.

Many trackdays frown on unofficial timing, but if you do a ‘Paceday’ run by hottrax then you get official timings. Although there is more to racecraft than simply being able to put in a hot lap, laptimes are your best indicator of you readiness.

On the track day i was in the novice group as it was my first ever day, however i was one of the fastest even though in was with R1's and GSXR100s . which i was well please at seeing as i was on the standard SV!!. Therefore I would defiantly need to go into a novice class if there is one?
I do intend to get a few more track-days under my belt before i even enter a race, and budget would be quite limited.
To be honest doing a race season seems at bit advanced for me at this stage, however i would eventually like to get there. Is there any where where you can just get a taster to see what its like without having to sign up for a season? My nearest circuit it Brads Hatch, which is where i did my track day,do they by any chance have days where you just turn up and race? I know this is unlikely!

Yep, there are Rookie specific series, but don’t be fooled by the term ‘Rookie’ thinking it is like being in a novice group at a trakday. Generally speaking even a mid-pack rookie would still be well up there in the FAST group on a trackday. :shock:

Don’t let this put you off, just make sure you are ready.

Get yourself on a hottrax paceday, get into the inters this time and get some laptimes and take it from there.

here's a thought... Some race bike owners hire them out for single races, I think... Wasn't Mike1234 doing that this year, also Naked Racing Project did with one of their minitwins if I recall correctly.
