Apparently a lot of insurers ignore the first 3 points now as so many people have them

It's actually 4 years that points stay on your licence now. It used to be 3 years on your licence but they remained on record for 5. Now it's just 4 years for both.
And the insurance companies will always ask within the last 5 years because it is not considered as 'spent' under the rehabilitation of offenders act 1974 to be geeky.
It isn't the points that make it not spent for 5 years just the fine that goes with it.

wow - i am back to square one then-
dam
thought I had got rid of ayear of mine.. oooo dam it
Would I also be right in saying that you also have to pay 19 quid for the privilege of removal? I think that's what the DVLA website says - I'm assuming that points are an 'endorsement'.
Also...is the four years from the date of conviction? logic says yes it is.
Just for the record, as it hasn't been mentioned.
"SP" points are valid for 3 years from "conviction", so in that 3 year period they count towards your total of 12 penalty points.
They cannot be removed from your licence until 4 years has passed.
Yes, if you want them specifically removed from your licence, then you will have to pay £19 to the DVLA. However, if you change address, they'll come off automatically I think.
Finally, chances are that your insurance company will want to know what points you've had over the past 5 years.
Other endorsements stay on your licence far longer - such as DD (Drink drive etc).

They do come off when you move house.

Everytime I get points I'll have to move then!!

I've moved 38 times now :)
They'll only come off if expired, but if you can move house for less than £19 your a genius 8)
I was under the impression that points expired after 5 years but you could pay to have them removed after 3 (Check a reliable source as this is just what I understood) As mentioned insurance companies ask for 5 years worth of history so it would only be worth paying to have them dropped off your licence if you were riding round on 9 points or so meaning one extra conviction could tip you over the 12 and loose you your licence.
Having just moved into a new house 6months ago, I can verify what others have said. When you move house you're legally obliged to inform DVLA, and they issue you a new licence for free. Whilst they're at it, if you have points from 3years ago or more, the nice folks over in Swansea forget about putting these back on your new paper counterpart.
Only bad side is that moving house costs more than £19 :(
Another way to do it, would be to change your name via Deed Poll. Again, the DVLA issue you a new licence for free, and forget about points over 3years old (I'm assuming). Again, it costs more than £19 :(

you could, pretend to move house, give them your mates adress, and then move back home again, a few weeks later. should be free that way
