just got sv650s with 14750 on clock how and what is the best way to change oil and filter and what is the best filter and oil to use? :shock:

if its DIY your looking at go to hein gericke they will give you the right stuff for about £25.

Go to Hein Gericke and get their service kit for your bike. Semi synthetic bike specific oil is perfect.

Warm the bike up and stick it on a rear paddock stand. Let it cool down for a bit then undo the sump plug. Drain into a suitable container. There is going to be nearly 2.5 litres of oil so make sure the container is big enough. Remove the filler cap.

Undo the oil filter.

Once completely drained reinsert the sump plug. Not too tight because it is screwing into alloy. You can strip the thread quite easily.

Smear a little engine oil on the new filters seal and screw on the new oil filter. Do it up by hand upto the seal then one more full turn.

Add the oil a little at a time until you can see it in the sight glass. It is easy to add more, but more difficult to get it back out if you overfill.

Screw on filler cap, start the engine and check for leaks.

Oh and patience is a virtue my son.

Good description from Scoobs.

A couple of additional minor points,

- when you undo the drain plug, make sure you don't scald yourself if the oil is particularly hot (best not to have it too hot, feel the engine, that's how hot the oil is :idea: !), and watch out because it always shoots out further than you are expecting

- there's a sealing washer on the drain plug. All the manuals say renew it each time. 99% of the time it'll be fine to re-use it, I do. I know I should use a new one but in the last 30yrs or so of changing oil I've re-used them on dozens (hundreds?) of occasions and they don't leak (usually!).

- Check the O-ring seal on the old filter doesn't get left on the engine. I've never known it but I've heard of it supposedly happening.

- Do the new filter us as tight as you can by hand. You'll feel when it fully compresses the seal and goes "solid", that's fine, they don't come undone like that. Don't worry unduly about number of turns etc, just as tight as you can by hand.

I like to 1/2-fill the filter with oil before fitting to the bike

also, after the initial fill-up & settle to level in the sight-glass, start the engine - DO NOT REV - and let it run for 10s or so. leave to settle for 1/4 hour or so. check oil level again - it will probably need topping up a little



me, the the third Duke of Wimbourne, paranoid about oil levels? at this time of night? with my reputation? ;-)

from edinburgh got sv650s fully faired blue no mods yet but dont know if i will like it the way it is?
