done the washing machine thing once but i dont think it does the jacket anygood.
i just cleaned my T-stunt air jacket this weekend. it looks brand new, esp as white is a bugger to keep clean. the black has come up all glossy too just like i bought it.
heres how i did it.
soak in warm water (aka the bath) with all the pads out for a few hours with a little washing power.
get a nail brush, and a bar of Vanish stain remover soap (only a pound)
rub the dirty area with the soap, then scrub with the brush. then rinse off.
do a small area at a time, the brush gets the muc off pretty good, and is great for getting under the seams, and cleaning up those reflective strips.
then rinse off with the cold shower,
hang to dry (took less than an hour to dry in the sun on saturday)
when i was done, the water was black.
also there is a poundshop near me that sells motorcycle bug remover,
its much better than any other brand ive tried, literally just spray on the bugs, and wipe off.
voila, bugs done, i use it on my clothes, visor and bike.
if you wanna pay me some postage, ill send u some.

for the bike and the helmet i use Mr sheen seems to work well its just the jacket i was getting fed up with because it looks very second hand. thanks for the offer tho bikageboy.
what jacket is it ?
there are some companys out there that offer a restoration service, but if its only a cheap one, might as well buy a new one,
high quality jackets seem to look new after a clean, whereas the bottom end jackets "buffalo, belstaff ect ect" tend to fade and look a bit used.
or you could always try some of the nikwax products, there supposed to be very very good.
Take it in the shower

I put my Shoei textile jacket in a hand wash then used the Nikwax wash-in re-proofer meant for climbing gear and the likes. It hasn't really worked all that well though, the jacket lets in water much sooner than before. It did come out a lot cleaner, so not all bad.

I throw my Ixon jacket in the washing machine on a cool cycle. Most important thing to remember is do not use fabric softener!
If there're any really dirty bits (my coat has white on the sleeves....right where I lean my arms on the tank when waiting at traffice lights  ), I just spray them with vanish pre-wash spray.

I've washed my textile Alpinestars Jacket in the washing machine on the quick and cool wash.
Liz swears by the Nikwax Techwash if your jacket is Goretex, you'll need to get some re-proofer for it though as it wont be waterproof after its been through the machine.
Failing that fill the bath with some luke warm water and wash your jacket with some baby shampoo that seems to work well.

I complained, and they re-cleaned the jacket FOC, re proofed it and sent me a travel towel to cover the cost of postage. Its the only time that i will try to wash my jackets. Form now on, black is the way to go me thinks/

Tried the techwash wash and reproffer stuff on my hein gericke jacket and it now leaks a bit under torrential conditions
The best thing i know for getting bugs off anything is get a wet rag/kitchen towel and leave it on the affected area for 30min then come back and wipe the bugs away.

Myself and 2 friends swear by the 1 quid can of bug remover. It is fantastic and even dissolves tar marks and and other things and i have been using it for a year on both car and bike paint and no ill effects

Who cares, it's a bike jacket, and they are bugs! Brush 'em off with a gloved hand and live a little...
The same brand also do a chainlube which is real cheap, works a treat and fairly low-fling. 151 Dream Machine Chain Lube. Hmm, guess they do a whole range, and going by this thread worth keeping an eye out for. Sure as hell beats £7 or 8 for a spray can from local bike shops...

With all this hot weather, it's the *inside* of my jacket that needs cleaning most.

What re-proofer do you guys use?
You could become one of the T shirt brigade and wear a t shirt on the outside of yer kit?
Otherwise, wait til it rains. Rain water usually does a good job of cleaning bugs off, must be this acid rain lark.
get a can of scotchgaurd and spray it the bugs should then brush off with a nailbrush.........once its guts have dried of course

Or, go buy a Rukka jacket, drop it in a cool gentle wash twice a year and never worry about reproofing it :P

Seems one of the pleasures of the open faced lid era are likely to go a missing here.
The question used to be.."How can you tell a happy motorcyclist?"
Answer....."By the dead flies on his teeth!" :P :P :P
