Took my gsxr in for a service today and they leant me a gsr600.
Going from the gsxr to the gsr felt very strange as the tank on the gsr is very very short, so the riding position was very much like a scooter. Ok maybe not that bad, but it did feel kinda funny. And the wide bars...... Yes it was just me going from a sports to a naked.
Overall it was a fun ride. A little vibey unless the revs were between 10500 and 11500 and then it was extremely smooth. Dropped in to corners nicely and has a really really nice sound. I think that was the nicest part. Found myself revving it at lights just cos it sounded really nice.
Mirrors were awful, and after every couple of miles I found that the left mirror just showed my lovely visor.
Has a proper fuel gauge and a gear indicator. So has a few luxury items. Looks sweet as, definately better in the flesh.
Overall I'm glad I got the gsxr, but if I liked nakeds then it's definately the 600 I'd go for. Hope they get the larger version out soon!
any questions, ask away

Swimming eh, hardest game in the world...
the answer to your question is yes, but not until 2354 and he will have webbed feet.

Replace the bandit?! Finally! I have always hated the bandit. Huge pile of stinking monkey poop those things. Never liked em, and the gsr is so so so so so much better. With the 1000 engine in......mmmmmmm

Is it better than an SV? Which of course, the answer is no! :D
And how much is it? Not been in a Suzuki dealership for a while and RRP mean nothing nowadays.

Bandit's were great bikes and served a purpose. Sure they were not as quick as many other's but still a nice stable machine and good for the new rider. I owned one for 9 months after owning a ZX7R and I really loved it, was plenty fast for an unfaired bike. Plus the 1200's are wheelie monsters! I like the look of the GSR but I can see of you dropped it those built in indicators would be very expensive to fix.

Shin, what did you think to the fueling ? All the magazine reviewers are complaining about snatchy fuel injection on the GSR.
For a naked bike I quite like them, But Liz hates them.

It was a more laid back ride than the sv, and a smoother power delivery, but if you like the v-twin grunt then it's not as good as the sv. Horses for courses and all that.
As for the price, £4800, £1 deposit 0% finance.... neh too bad.

Yeah, low down first gear did seem a bit poor. Although I got used to it after 5-10 minutes. Slw speeds it did feel very snatchy.
Suspension was better than the sv (well better than my old one) , but nothing special.

Too much of a Hornet for me and might as well buy the Honda for the same price over the Suzuki.
Over a grand more than an SV and less interesting IMHO...A new GSXR600 isn't that more expensive either.

all very true, but for a borrowed bike it was fun. Would definately go for the gsxr600............oh wait a minute I have :D

Get a Hornet whilst you can........lovely carbs and no nasty fuel injection glitches 8)
And if you look at the torque curves the Hornet's got way more mid-range.
The swing-arm on the GSR looks mighty fine, though 8)

I very nearly spat coffee all over my desk. Are you sure on the price?
When I went to buy my sv650 they had the GSR600 there for nearly £6'000. Which to me just did not make any sense as you can pick up a new gixxer for that much. £4'800 is not bad at all and they do look rather snazzy. Just those indicators would worry me. Was it an under seat exhaust Shin and did you experience any 'hot bot' problems? How comfy was the seat too?
(goes to check bank balance) :D

Gotta say Suzuki's FI problems are easily solved with a TRE. Road a mates gsxr600k4. Completely standard as mine is, but it had a TRE. Not a major difference, but the throttle was so much smoother. I would think it'd be the same for the gsr.

yup, just checked premiermotorcycles website and it's definately 4799.
underseat exhaust and no hotbot problems at all. Seat was very comfy all considering. I prefer two seats rather than the long one, but it doesn't look as bad as I thought it would with the one. they've done well on the design appart from the pillion foot rests, don't like them.

The GSR's problems are the same as those on many new bikes and a TRE mod won't cure it.
The problem is that the fuel injection has been sorted to meet Euro 3 emission limits. This has very tight limits for emissions on over-run and when idling, causing the snatchiness when getting back on the throttle.
The problem is worst on bikes with pre-06 model engines with a "Euro 3" FI system retrofitted (i.e. most bikes). New engine designs with Euro 3 in mind are not generally so bad as they cope better.
A Power Commander and a FI remap will help.
Hornet is a nice bike. Isn't the new one coming soon?
Got to be a new one for next year as Euro 3 is compulsory then, so no more carbs :(

I have seen one of these GSR600 bikes and wondered what it was. In the flesh they look very modern. So it sounds like they are the bandit replacement.
Are they more powerful than a bandit?
As the suzuki website claims that they have used the GSXR engine and made it less powerful but with a better spread of power low down.
Of course the next question is, will the next SV reincarnation also be a similar style?
Banditmania, have already got some modifications for it http://www.gsr600.co.uk/

I was talking to a couple of guys from Suzuki GB at Beaulieu & from what they said no-one outside Japan knows whether Suzuki are gonna put a 1000cc GSXR engine or a 1300cc 'Busa engine in the big version yet.
One thing IS certain though - it's not gonna have the supercharger on it like the original concept bike

Kwak...The 749 series is far too reliable to be a Ducati! Yeah you will always get the odd problem with any bike, however you will never see as long a list of regular probs on any Ducati forum than perhaps one might find on the forums for other well loved V.Twins.
I know 3 guys with 749's and the only person to have a hiccup was me when the gear selector return spring broke,(all done under warranty) :P

You won't see a long list of probs because a) the dukes dont get ridden and b) you get a long list of problems here because there are so many people. the 3 inderviduals you know arent really as reprasentative as the 3000 on here :P

Squirrel...Ducati's are ridden every bit as much as SV's. If not as regular, certainly quite often harder!
Dont believe the old wives tales put out by Honda owners that all Ducati fans do is polish and admire their fantastic machines.
I challenge anyone to go and find the "long" list of recurring problems suffered by the "9" series on any Ducati forum,(there are lots of them out there)
The only one I am aware some peeps have suffered with is a tendency to stall when sat at lights etc. A fault present particularly on the 749s oddly enough and which can be easilly rectified.
The searcher will I assure you be dissapointed. :P

I've owned three and thought, as you have said, they served a purpose. I really enjoyed the three that I had. Two naked and a fared. Same as the SV, they are budget bikes and for what they cost are very good bikes.

I could be wrong, but I think I read that there's a Euro 3, fuel injected B12 coming out this year? It'll still have the coathanger frame though, even if they do.
Peter Henry, how about the clock failures that have happened to 3 different press bikes on the 999s? :) Or, for that matter, the one review bike and one longtermer 749 with whole new gearboxes? ;)
Have you ever peed in a swimming pool ? 8)
Did anybody see the GSR 750 in the last issue of PB?
Some Austrian nutter fitted the front end and engine from a K4 GSXR 750 into the frame and was hooning around some euro track on it. I'd buy one.
northwind
20-09-06, 09:41 PM
I'd consider it :) Should be a pretty easy swap, too. Frame mounts are the same, just chuck the stock engine and all the wiring away and drop in a complete 750 motor and wiring loom, bodies, reg/rec, etc. Clocks are interchangable apparently.
Yup it's so easy that maybe they will do it. Especially if the rumour about the new Z750 are true. Ally swingarm and USD radial braked front end. It'd be good to have proper 750 road bikes on the market again.
Have you ever peed in a swimming pool ? 8)
No, but I've swum in a toilet.
