Riding home Tuesday evening along the Embankment going through the traffic lights before Waterloo Bridge. A chap coming the opposite direction decides to turn right in front of me. I slam on the brakes, too hard and the rear of the ike goes airborne just in front of him. Aparently the bike flipped over going across his bonet in the process.

I'm lying face down in quite a bit of pain, fortunately there where 2 community support officers who called the police. Police turned up and took dtails and witness statements. At the time I didn't feel too bad so didn't go to hospital.

Phone my long suffering father inlaw to come and pick the bike up, while I'm waiting discover that the bike somehow ripped out his power stering (the old girl got her revenge). By this time my hand is really hurting, so get the bike home and get a lift up to A & E. Managed to break my thumb at the base in 2 places and dislocate it as well. They want to pin it so I'm admitted overnight.

Yesterday morning they decide to move it back into place and cast it. They may still have to pin it when I go back in 2 weeks. Other injuries wher a concussion, jared shoulder and very bruised and grazed knees. Good job I was wearing my kit. Onr look at my helmet just reinforces my hatred of open face lids.

Oh and it's the wifes bike as mines off the road so I'm only covered third party :(

Sorry to hear about your accident. I've just had a broken scaphoid pinned as well. They should be able to do it on day surgery. All I'm left with is a 3mm scar. The wonders of modern keyhole surgery.
Get well soon.

Sounds like you've got a good case with the 2 CSO witnesses - have you seen PAWS' 'letter'? So hopefully no worry that you've only got TPO. Do you have legal cover? possibly through any policy you can think of - eg. house contents? your own bike? (also ebike was giving it free with a quote).

:( At least you're not as dim as me, when I broke my fingers I never went to hospital for a fortnight, I just assumed it'd get better  Fingers tend to heal pretty well though- hopefully it'll not need pinned.

On the bright side, the fact that you hit the car is, I think, a good thing here. If you'd dropped it and avoided hitting it, you'd have a much harder time proving blame. If both vehicles were still in your lane when the police or community support guys turned up, that really ought to be game over. Good luck!

Glad you're okay, that's the main thing. The other driver's insurance should cover the SV you were riding (particularly as you have witnesses). Hope you heal fast.

Oh and well done with the bonnet-munching stoppie ;).

Numpty car drivers

I'm sure you'll mend quickly with a bit of tlc from Mrs Sharris74 (as long as she doesn't blame you for trashing her bike  )

Oh and well done with the bonnet-munching stoppie ;).

Might be worth asking for any CCTV coverage and posting it up as a video

How the feck did the bike manage to trash the power-steering? :?

Just had the :toss: s insurance company on the phone asking for my details as they want to sort out a courtesy car for him. Sounds like they're trying to blame me. Well feck em. I'm usually quite resonable but this has realy pi**ed me off. I'm going to claim for anything I can.

Bloke soundd supprised when i said i was holding his client to fault arrrggghh so angry.

Does this mean i can ask for a courtesy bike (even though i can' rid it)?

From what I've read in the past, you take more of a beating on the rugby field!!
You'll be needing a new dark visor too!! (Done it's job there!!)

Seriously, hope you mend soon, glad you escaped 'relatively' unscathed..

Assuming that you've reported it to your (wife's) insurance company then don't talk to 'em at all. Just give 'em your insurance company details and your claim number.

I wouldn't worry about the courtesy car as he may be entitled to one under his policy anyway. The probably just want a claim number or some such for their records.

One thought - do you have legal cover? If so then tell the company straight away yourself and don't rely upon your insurance company to do it.

Given the witnesses, etc, it's doubtful that you'll be held liable. You are entitled to be put into the position that you were because or the act, default or negligence of the other party so yes, you should entitled to a courtesy bike. You might not be able to ride it but your wife will

Good luck

Do I need to report it to the wifes insurance as I was riding on mine the bit that sys "The policyholder may also rive a motorcycle not belonging to him/her and not hired etc"?

Might look and see if there where any cctv cameras as I want to see what happened.

Depends upon whether or not your are claiming on your insurance or as a named rider on hers. I'd assumed the latter. Sorry.

Better for her that you claim on your's so as not to affect her NCD if the insurance renewal comes up whilst the claim is being processed.

Don't forget to tell your insurance/legal cover people that you wish to claim for personal injury. Assuming no blame on your part, the third party's insurance will cover you for that

Ouch!

From what you've said about the accident it would appear that the driver was at fault, so hopefully your insurance company will be out to nail him for everything they can

I have to say that the pic of your helmet re-enforces every negative thought I have about open-faced lids

Thanks still a bit angry but calming down a bit now. 6 weeks in a cast in this heat isn't fun. And I'm doing my PPL at the moment so have to put that on ice for a while.

Not to mention 6 weeks of public transport

Claim on mine she's very proud of her 6 years NCD, just got mine back after the claim for smashing the Trumpet up last year was settled.

Anyone want to lend me their bike

My letter can be found here:

But as stu369 says its irrelevant if you have tpo cover. Do you have legal cover with it? If not consider one of the no win, no fee solicitors like White Dalton. Especially if you have witnesses as good as the CSOs and its clearly not your fault.

But glad to hear youre relatively ok. But definitely speak to insurers and find out if you have legal cover, if not sort it asap.

If you do claim from the drivers insurance for injuries, don't forget to mention that you've been unable to complete your PPL - they take all this type of stuff into account when deciding on an injury claim.
When I had my car accident many many years ago, they took into account that I couldn't horse ride, as it was to do with quality of life or something, and this upped the compenstation claim.
And keep all public transport receipts to claim with.

Oh yes, and of course heal quick - hope the thumb will be ok to ride after.

Sorry to hear this but glad your alright and came out not too bad. Totally agree with you on the open faced helmet thing and glad you were wearing the right kit.

The bike does look a bit cained, can always combine our bikes into some kind of mashed up monster

Get well soon and hope you get everything sorted.

Ouch, I would be surprised that his insurance co thinks it's your fault, he has probably told them all kind of things. If you have two witnesses then I would be surprised if it went against you. Good luck and get well soon.

sorry to hear this but at least it sounds like it could have been worse.

As others have said, it doesn't sound like your fault and you should claim from him.

I had a similar experience about 10 years ago. Car pulled across me and I braked too hard so the bike slid down the road (and if I hadn't then I would have been embedded in his bonnet).

Not to sound too mercenary but back then a slightly sprained wrist and a couple of spare parts for an MZ250 was worth £3k. I'd have thought a broken thumb, new helmet and a written off SV would be worth considerably more.

Chatting to my father inlaw who used to be a mechanic and is a bike nut. we've decided to buy the SV back off the ins company when it's all sorted and do it up as a track day bike. Can do all the work ourselves and he can spray bikes and cars.

Does anyone know how you go about doing this or will the ins company offer it to me first?
