Has anyone here taken these before. Got given them at the hospital and I feel like I've been on a night out with Pete Doherty. Which would be great if I was at home but I'm at work and got a meeting with my boss in an hour.

Yeah I got given plenty of Tramadol in my time in hospital.

Fantastic and according to the nurses its 50 times as good as paracetemol (which sounds fishy but hey)

Tramadol Hydrochloride

How does it work?

Tramadol belongs to a group of medicines called opioids. Opioids mimic the effects of naturally occurring pain reducing chemicals (endorphins). They combine with the opioid receptors in the brain and block the transmission of pain signals. Therefore, even though the cause of the pain may remain, less pain is actually felt.

What is it used for?

# Treatment and prevention of moderate to severe pain.

Warning!

# This medicine may cause drowsiness and this may be made worse by alcohol. If affected, do not drive or operate machinery
# Dependence may occur rarely with this medicine and withdrawal symptoms may occur (rarely) when treatment is discontinued.

If you're lucky it won't have the usual effect of blocking the nerves which control your bowel and bladder. A few codeine after my wisdom teeth were pulled and I didn't have a dump for days. Made peeing difficult too.

I use them whenever my back pain becomes to much. Yes they make you drowsy and work best with a good shot of whiskey.

Other side effect is they will bung you up.

I was given them when my back failed on me. i can't praise them high enough. dependency is an issue but normally only if you have to take them for months.

best to tell the boss you on them, admonishes you when you make silly mistakes :D

They were the only thing to control hideous sciatica - very very good at pain relief but yes you feel like you've been out on the tiles.

OK, first time user, long time abuser! My old friend Mr TH, who drops in for a coffee about four times a day!

To clarify, I've never been prescribed them before but have now been on TH for about 9 months.

Side effects - personally I've not suffered any (all nice and regular thank you very much and no hangover!).

Dependancy however - oh yes. Mixed up getting my repeat prescription once and oh boy was I a little whole-body-aching ball of pain for a day. Two capsules and four hours later and I was up and dancing a jig. A one-legged, hopping kind of jig, but a dance nevertheless.

At this point I deliberately stopped taking them altogether for a few days - the withdrawl symptoms wore of in about 48 hours, but I was still left a non-functioning ball of knee pain that lesser drugs weren't denting - so I at least discovered that a) the TH was working, and most importantly that b) I still have a real reason to be taking them in the quanities I do.

I've been on Diclofenac Sodium for about a year - an anti-inflammatory but the pain relief is negligable.
Initially coupled with Paracetamol - then Co-Codamol (30/500 - 30mg Codine, 500mg Paracetamol) and then onto the TH.

I would advise taking as little as you can only as and when you need it. However, if you are taking it regularly, you may find your body will adjust and after a few days you will no longer suffer any side effects. So take a few days off, take it easy and see what happens.

Alternatively, if you are taking it irregularly, then the likehood is that you'll continue to have the side effects, or if they are going to wear off it'll take a lot longer for your body to adjust.

Um, hope that helps, though as it's information coming from a self-admited drug dependant crippo - I'm not sure how much I should be trusted!

Morphine does the same. Took me days to 'go' after my op. All the french nurses got excited - 'ah ha - cacca - oui oui'

Have been on them (2 x 200mg slow release per day) for 3 years now

Honestly could not cope without them as in constant pain and will be until they fix me out (eventually)

Yep, there are dependency issues with them, if I miss one, jeeeze, I soon know about it

When they get me fixed up they say they will come up with a plan for withdrawal, much the same as Prednisolone (steroid) that I also have to take, lower the dose over many weeks until none required.

Apart from that, they gave me a life back as I was at my wits end with pain so therefore willing to put up with the drowsiness and insomnia (sounds daft but true)

Occasionally have had to take 2 as a single dose, sweet lordy, thats fun, total space cadette for approx 12 hours

Out of curiousity, when do you take them, morning or evening?
Do you start to feel crappy a few hours before you can take the next lot?

I'm on the same quantity but they are 'instant hit' capsules of 50mg each. Most days it works out to four lots of two.
It does mean though that if I'm having a good day I can bring it down a bit and maybe only have one instead of two soem times - or alter the timings to suit.

Always leave myself two saved for just before bed though, no matter how bad my day's been. That way I only feel mildly crappy when I get up and generally manage to sleep for 6hrs straight if I'm tired.

K - I take them pretty regular times daily, one around 8ish and the other around 10ish at night

Was on the "instant hit" ones at first but they played total havoc with me, was up and down like a yoyo in between the hit and the come down, gettin a kind of mad itchy feelin, couldnt stay still for more than a few seconds, crabbit b'stard etc

It was only when in the hospital on one of my many visits :( that they sent a specialist nurse to speak to me (she deals with pain management) and within a couple of minutes of me describing how I felt on the 50mg tabs, she suggested we try the 200mg SR (slow release) ones so that there would be much less of the instant hit and instant come down

They sorted me kinda overnight but as I said earlier, if I miss one then I soon know about it, you start to get the mad mental wrestless feelin then the pain returns with a vengeance

I was on them for a while after my hip op... Movement was essential to get it to heal, but the pain level unmedicated made movement pretty horrendous, and cocodamol doesn't dent it... I was on them for probably around a month, and they were absolute lifesavers, basically got me up and functional when I'd have been dead to the world.

I didn't have any dependancy issues with them, I had more problems coming off the cocodamol which I replaced them (because my entire digestive system fell out... Most people get constipated on cocodamol, me, my body compensated for it so I got the runs the second I dropped my dosage!)

As side effects go... It made me a little floaty, and it did bugger up my judgement... I took one and a pair of cocodamol one day at work and I was an utter disaster :) But nothing too bad, I have to say, considering how powerful they are.

It depends, if you hand over that little slip of paper called a presciption first, then yes.
