View Full Version : Giving over the reins....
Following on from the SHOCK HORROR thread on pillions.
As a rider, do you mind being a pillion occasionally?
I'm not fussed as long as it's someone I know, preferrably without a deathwish. :D
But a mate of mine absolutely refuses to go pillion. He says he needs to be in control. Never had a 'moment' whilst on the back or any real scares as a rider either except one low speed off when he had his 125 and he once did an overtake at a very silly moment when he stared at death in the shape of a Scooby grille.
Do you need to be in control?

I only rode pillion once, 13 or 14 years ago, and absolutely hated it. I couldn't manage to stay neutral and just go along for the ride. I'd guess it'd be even worse now! :?

I really dislike riding pillion unless I have to. I think it's because every time I feel the bike move about, I think it's not doing it due to my inputs (which of course it isn't) and hence it "feels" to me like I've lost control of the bike.

I have no idea whether I'd like being a pillion or not, nobody has offered me a ride.
I last went as a pillion when I was 6 and I regularly went to sleep back then.
I don't actually mind riding pillion, but very rarely do so as I've usually got my own bike. If someone wants me to see what their bike is like I either ride mine with them or ride theirs.
Though the comment from my last outing as a passenger did make me smile - "I almost forgot you were there, I mean, my loaded panniers shift about and weigh more than you do!"
I'm not too sure, but I think it was a compliment. :?
i hate going pillion, i really do, to be honest, when we are moving, im ok, its just before we get on the bike im really really scared.
not sure why,

Absolutely hate going pillion.
Don't like going pillion at all unless i really really really really have to.
Only been pillion about 3 or 4 times in about 10 years of riding the last time was just a few months ago and i was so tense that i got loads of cramps
I think its fun. There's something good about knowing that if you do come off, your bike is still in your garage and not sliding down the road. It is fun, but it does get hairy when you get people trying to show off.
I don't like going pillion, I don't like taking a pillion. I have been described as a selfish control freak before...
Me, I like going pillion, you get the fun without the responsibility.
Im only 100% happy going pillion with my other half, any one else i think twice about it.
and no i dont/wont take pillions.

I hate going pillion - cant see where Im going :x
been going pillion for 33 years now - just managed to get to ride meself 4 years ago and it all went out the window last year - so Im back to pillion   (not for much longer though :D )
I'm fussy about who I'll go pillion with, but I'm fine going pillion occasionally although it always makes me want to jump on my own bike!
Going pillion with an experanced rider is fantastic! Having been pillion through london with both Sid Squid and Rictus, its amazing the gaps and oppotunities they find.
10/10, fantastic fun!
Dan
Hate, hate, hate going pillion.
Though now and again it's good to do to remember how vunerable you feel.
I quite enjoy a pillion ride now and again, it works well if you are a rider yourself, leaning into the bends etc - and as Ed said - all the fun with none of the responsibility! :D

not too keen on going pillion so wish me luck as DD is picking me up at the airport today on my new raptor. i just hold on and shut my eyes  as its my bike he really should go pillion but there is not a chance in the world of that happening.
take my daughter pillion as she is light and doesnt affect handling. took my mate once and stalled at every junction and set of lights. she is same weight as me only benefit was when she sat on back it squashed suspension and i could reach the ground with both feet for first time ever

Riding it all the way back home afterwards?
As for the question at hand, I'm not a big fan of going pillion. You get an added sense of acceleration I think, but most of that comes from the fact I feel like I'm going to go off the back

i really enjoy going pillion, you get a far greater feeling of acceleration and the feeling your going 200mph(well kind of) with only a little plastic grab rail to hold onto, its great, what a buzz, i also like taking pillion, you can enjoy them hairy moments with your mates, with some one to back you up on those stories that if you had been on your own, no one would believe.
Depends on the bike. I love going pillion of my b/f's Africa Twin cos I get to relax against the top box and check out the scenery. But hate the R1, hard acceleration, wheelies and other - what I perceive to be - life-threatening stuff. If anyone's gonna break my legs, then it will be me.

I suppose your mate in your avatar doesn't mind then?
I hate it, only been pillion 3 or 4 times. Last one was with Stretchie, giving me a lift back after dropping the SV off for it's service. He's a good rider and I totally trust him not to prat around, but I still hated it. Next time I'll be getting the bus in full leathers!

Don't bring back memories! :)
Yeah, had my first proper go as pillion on saturday and I have no intention of ever doing it again. No offence to my chaffeur, he made it as easy and comfortable as it could have been I think ;) But I really hated the whole package. Sitting on the back waiting to start, and slow control/filtering stuff, was absolutely the worst- everything's so exaggerated up there, every squirm felt like a huge wobble.
To be fair though, I did a few things wrong... Next time, I'd have one hand around the front at least (well, it keeps the pilot happy...), braking and gearshifts were really no fun the way I was doing it (one hand around the strap, the other with a deathgrip on the plastics, and bracing with my legs- plain stupid with hindsight).
But then again, next time, I'll get a taxi. On the other hand, it did mine I wasn't worried about my bike :)

I don't mind it at all. But then most of my mates are all great riders. One mate got his knee down while I was on the back. That was...er.....interesting. :D

 First time I got my knee down was with a mate on the back! He served two purposes - seeing how far away I was and compressing the suspension! Mind you, it was only afterwards that I realised that having knee-sliders would have meant getting it down way earlier as they stick out a good inch.
i love it :)
but then i like being out of control
