Aww, did they call him names?
You find more maturity in a nursery than on a football pitch.

Yer just seems odd a world class player like Zidane lost it, I dont get it.
yeah i know were your coming from falc who knows maybe he had just had enough

I believe that someone with ZZ's experience should NEVER have been 'pushed too far'. He is a professional who must have heard it all before and to do what he did was madness! He should not have reacted like that, it sets a terrible example. I am a big admirer of ZZ's playing ability and the man is a football genius, France also played a better overall game and had the hardest route through in the tournament. However, following that incident I was rooting for the Italians. Shame really.

As Tara rightly says, don't take the actual incident in isolation if you wish to gain an understanding of what led to the incident. It goes right back to when they were together in the penalty area.
It would have been far more than just name calling you can be sure of that. Winding people up is a part of the game to put them off, but this must have been pretty strong for Zizou to react like he did.
Remember how Eric Cantona reacted when that knob of a Crystal Palace fan called him a "motherf++ker"? Different cultures react differently to certain insults.
Cant forgive his response but for me does not cloud the fact that he has been a prince of a player. 8)

Why did he do that!? I will never understand the french
Because it'll boost his book/film appearances/everything he now goes on to do after football. What better way to get in the news than doing that in the final of the world cup? The story is bigger than the story that Italy won the thing.

Sveedy...Do you know how much Real Madrid paid for Zizou? The cut he got from that and his wages would hardly see him desperate to earn off a book! Not that there will not be one mind!

Not sure how true this is, but I have learned that Materazzi,(who is apparently well known for having a foul mouth, that often goes beyond normal wind up banter)
very possibly called Zizou,(among other things) "a terrorist". Now given Zidane's ethnic background and the fact that he was living in Madrid when the train atrocity took place, that could be taken very badly indeed and hence the result being that he snapped. :?
Once again I do not aim to defend an action that Zinedine has indicated he regrets, but I do offer some information aimed at promoting a little understanding. :?
It is also very interesting that thus far, Materazzi has refused to give details as to the exchange between himself and Zidane before he got decked! Read in to that what you will.

Well if that's true then it's definitely below the belt. I think it's safe to say that something very insulting was said to Zidane which made Zidane snap. Just because he's a professional footballer doesn't mean he's any more thick skinned when it comes to matters like this. And where was Materazzi's professionalism when he said whatever it was he said? There is a line you just don't cross, whether you're on the pitch or the street. If Materazzi crossed that line then he deserves what he got and I don't blame ZiZou for what he did.
Or maybe Materazzi said **** all and Zidane just wanted to create a bad boy image for himself after seeing the success of a certain Mr Vinnie Jones :?:

Listening to Radio 4 this morning on way into work, they asked for listeners guesses about what was being said.
Materazzi: My people will give you $50, 000,000 if you head butt me.
Zidane: Make it $100,000,000
Materazi: OK
or
Materazzi: How do you respond to the commonly held conception that French farmers are receiving more than their fair share from the common agricultural policy?
or (and IMO the best):
Materazzi: Know any good cures for hiccups?

The Matrix:  I have a spider on my shirt... eww eww, take it off ZiZou I hate them, they are just perfectly horrid.
ZiZou: You take it off you big girl.
The Matrix: PLEEEASE, EWW he's crawling up now. He will get into my lovely hair!!!
ZiZou: OK, no hands though, this is football.
The Matrix: OK, but hit him hard. I dont want him laying eggs in my hair.
ZiZou: Esssh.
The Matrix: Opmh. I think you got him buddy.
For the game playing fans out there

I found it funny :D
Initially,I thought ZZ was silly doing that, now though,I find it quite funny! I must admit though I'm quite annoyed that the TV companies didn't show ZZ's head fall off like in the video!
He must have been VERY pi**ed off to do that,So Materazzi must have been terribly naughty!
Still,never mind,no harm done......Oh,there is,France lost!

He will be associated with the head butt for a very long time - as its his last act in football. But I doubt it will deminish what people thought of his footballing ability.
I can't believe a pro would do that - I know comments can be tough to take but defenders have done that since football began. I'm be surprised any world class player should fall for that sort of gamesmanship, especially in a World Cup final, in your last game when its 0-0. He should have set his thought to one side until the end of the match, and known Meterazzi (if he said anything contrary at all) was trying to wind him up.

The French people have been voicing their criticism of the incident but that will not affect the biding memory of what his contribution to French football has been. he even came out of international retirement when they were struggling in the qualification stages to help them get to the finals.
Where as Maradona is blindly idolised by Argentina, the French hold Zizou in reverence. They see him as a genius and acknowledge that at times such brilliance can come with a few warts also.
Zizou normally is a most calm and tranquil individual, I have read comments from people as to how he has something of an aura to him when he enters a crowded room.
He is, and was a lot more than that red mist piece of thuggery would have you believe. 8)
What a stupid thing to do whatever he was called, as a professional he should have waited until after the game then nutted him, after all they can't ban him if he's retiring
I think the Italians played the better football during the tournament ( especially in the semi final) and deserved to win.
It was a strange world cup in that no one player especially the big names) shone, for me 3 games will stand out Argentina v Mexico, Holland v Portugal and of course Italy v Germany two for outstanding football and one for comedy value

Well they had an Italian lip reader on ITV news tonight and IIRC they say Materazzi told Zidane he wished an ugly death on his family, then told him to go **** himself. Then Zidane stuck the head in. Zidane's head was turned so it's probs impossible to know what he said. Apparently Zidane's mother is ill so that comment will have cut deep. I don't think professionalism could have stopped anyone from wanting to stick one on Materazzi.

Zidane seems to have entered the serious players league.
"Collar turned up, back straight, chest stuck out, he glided into the arena as if he owned the ****ing place. Any arena, but nowhere more effectively than Old Trafford. This was his stage. He loved it, the crowd loved him. The players loved him too, for many reasons. Most importantly he got the job done." Keane on Cantona.
Those were the days my friends. Fouls were fouls. Get the job done.

As for ZZ - how do you think I got to look like this?
Peter Henry
11-07-06, 04:11 PM
Lifted from BBC News website:
BBC Radio Five Live asked for help from a deaf lip reader, Jessica Rees, who read the words phonetically to an Italian translator.
She deciphered the insult as being "you're the son of a terrorist *****" - a translation also carried by many national newspapers in Britain on Tuesday.
The BBC's Ten O'Clock News also called in experts to study the television footage of the incident and determined the following:
Materazzi's first word to Zidane was "no" before he then told him to "calm down".
He then accused him of being a "liar" and wished "an ugly death to you and your family" on the day the Frenchman's mother had been taken to hospital ill. This was followed by "Go f*** yourself".
Now of course Materazzi is going to plead the innocent and frankly he is making himself look even more pathetic in the manner in which he is doing so.
There are several issues here...racism and let's not forget the large banners displayed before every match at the World Cup and speeches made by team captains to the crowd regarding the issue.
There are also the painfull family issues that Zidane was dealing with and that Materazzi so horrendously abused.
Yes, Zidane was incorrect to react, but christ was Materazzi not deserving of it? :?

Reading what was said, I'm surprised that's all that was done to be honest.
He was without doubt a superb player but as such he should be able to deal with any verbal abuse thrown at him. There is no excuse for his behaviour regardless of what was said and FIFA should have fined him not given him player of the tournament. Players will always try to provoke a reaction from the opposition and I'm sure its not the first time he's had to deal with it so why react like that it the world cup final? On a brighter note it made the game a bit more interesting.

11-07-06, 06:26 PM
Yeah. I read that this is what Matrix allegedly said.
If thats true... then I understand his reaction. I know I know, pro player, only a game, blah blah, but thats the thing.
It is only a game.
That Matrix said that is over the line. He deserves a battering for it. I am not one for violence, when I saw the incident i was disgusted, but, yeah, sorry, he deserved it.
Still doesnt make what ZZ did right. But, it is only a game, you dont say those things, to anyone, ever.
ZZ has lost none of his class in my eyes (if thats what was said.) He was wrong to do it, but, meh, saying that is more distastful than head butting the guy.

The FIFA award was voted on by 1200 journalists and votes were submitted BEFORE the final.
Yeah I know the votes were already in but surely they could have given it to the 2nd place guy, what kind of a message does it send was my concern.
Peter Henry
11-07-06, 06:51 PM
Wootan...I understand what your saying, but do you not think the possible message going out when they have sorted out Materazzi, will be far more powerful? 8)
I assume you're referring to the possible racial abuse, if so I agree to a certain extent. My only real concern is a 3 match ban for racial abuse will be forgotten about in a few weeks, where as Zidane's head butt will be a talking point for years. My nephew has already been mastering the technique on his sister and all she did was half inch a bit of his curly wurly. I love the world cup, but in my opinion FIFA don't do enough to protect the game. Its time they started to make examples, they started the tournament saying diving and such tactics would not be tolerated but have done nothing to players who obviously are. Whatever was said clearly upset Zidane and there is no place for that in football but it still doesn't excuse his behaviour, and the "heat of the moment" excuse is crazy, imagine if everyone reacted like that, half the premiership would be in jail.
Peter Henry
11-07-06, 07:58 PM
Wootan..For the money they are on, and the fare they serve up half of them should be in jail for robbery! :P
