Hi guys. Im a new member here. Im 20 years old, have a full licence, been driving for 3 years(without any claims) and live in Dublin. Last wendesday I bought my 2001 SV 650 from Engalnd for £1500 and brought it over here.
Here's a pic...

http://img266.imageshack.us/img266/949/grahamsv6500bu.jpg

I got a quote from my insurance company Aon(part of Axa) and they quoted me €5750 (about 4 thousand pounds sterling) for 1 years insurance(third party only!!!)

As you can imagine Im pretty P*SSED OFF so I asked carole nash for help but they won't quote me until my renewal next may when Il be 21 with 4 years no claims!
Fu*kers! :(

There are only 2 insurance companies in Ireland!

I knew there would be difficulties about this before I bought the bike so Il most likely use it for the odd track day and leave her in the garage for the winter but it's such a shame though :(
How much would it be for me over in the UK would you expect?

That's shocking. I'm gutted for you mate.

I paid about £600 fully comp when I was 24, brand new SV, just got my full licence but that was several (cough, cough) years ago when insurance wasn't at silly prices. A mate, 19 a couple of years ago and just passed his test, was paying £1300 in the same rural area on a 5 yr old SV.

I know it's shocking! Nobody ever gets fully comp in Ireland until your about 30 and over!

**** mate  First off, welcome to the site :)

I paid 1200 quid for my 1st year's insurance TPO when I was 17. That was with Adelaide. And they were the only company that would even quote me! Do Adelaide do cover in the ROI? You'll have to excuse my ignorance...

Im paying less than £600 a year for a 1999 R6, 21 no NCB and my first bike. I have a friend who lives in Ireland and his car insurance is crazy, he was paying well over £2k for a 1980odd 1.0 mini.

Graham, I'm in Ireland also. September 2004 I insured a '91 CBR250. I was 23, had a provisional and it was my first time on the road in/on any sort of motor. AON were my only option and I paid them €2200. I got my full licence in December of 2004 and got around €450 back as I recall. In June 2005, after blowing the engine in the CBR, I bought a brand new SV650. It was ‘factory restricted’ or so they told me, so I contacted AON and they changed the details on the policy but charged me no more money. I did the AON Assessment and that dropped the insurance by around another €300 or so. SO……when I renewed my policy last time it cost around €1435 I think. (As it turns out the dealership sold me a ‘factory restricted’ bike that was not factory restricted. It was only a throttle restriction.) Now I’m still within my 2 year restrictions but the insurance company don’t need to know.

My point is, over here in Ireland we have no choice in insurance. It’s AON or Carole Nash and CN won’t touch you until AON have risked you for at least a year first. CN quoted me a tiny bit cheaper for when my renewal comes around again, so I’ll probably be changing then unless AON astound me with a fantastically low quote.

What they’ve quoted you is crazy crazy.

Jeez
Seems to me they've got it sewn up! 2 companies, they're gonna take the p**s!!

How can they quote you for more than the cost of the bike!

No diserespect, but your SV isn't worth £4K.

Is there an excess on the policy, as well??

That's ridiculous..
(Are there a lot of stolen cars/bikes in your area)??

After living in Dublin for two years I know exactly why the insurance is so high!

That is still shocking mate.

Yeah. The prices in Dublin are absolutely sickening. Totally disgusting. I dont really get it... we drive a little rough at times, but not worse than what I saw in Brixton say.

The companies have it stitched up. There is no choice really. I just stayed on small two strokes.

Here Graham... do you wanna here something even worse... I just got a quote for the year here for slightly over 100 dollars. And, a lot of the lads out here drive like absolute gimps.

Not right
When I go back there I will be > 30 anyway. Hopefully it wont be so bad.

some very interesting replies there!
I could live in the nicest area or the worst slum and it wouldnt matter because Im only 3rd party insured anyway.
100 dolars! my god!
Theres no excess on the policy and your dead right my bike is NOT worth 4K!!

Marky...thats very interesting about the factory restriction.
I think the whole factory restriction thing is a load of balls anyway because one can easily get them taken them off again just like any other certified(from a bike shop) but non-factory restriction.
It makes little sense that they dont accept genuine restrictions even if it was'nt originally restricted by the factory itself!
Is it possible to own a full powered sv and get it restricted genuinely and have Aon accept it as a group 5 bike?

I am tempted to give you Gavin from Tallaght's advice. "Just buy me f**cking EXUP 1000. They'll never catch you. You'll need lots of tyres though."
I am not even sure if he was joking or not.
He wanted to get rid of said EXUP due to the nightmares it gave him.
We sugested he would slow down, and he told us he was.
We sugested that slow meant less than a hundred past the Dropping Well in Miltown.
He just looked confused.

Emm. kph. Exactly. Ahem.

As I said, Gav sold the bike, because he would literally wake up scared at night replaying stuff he did that day.
I got on the back of him one time, out in the Dublin mts, and when I got off I had to make an urgent appointment with the jacks. Very urgent.

Lets say he bought a lot of tyres. And clutches. He just didnt do "slow". Never crashed either AFAIK.

Thats terrible! Can't you complain to someone, it sounds a lot like price fixing, as with only 2 companies thay can pretty much charge whatever they like!

What about getting english insurance and having it include a lot of vacation cover?? Probably a dumb idea.....

Not allowed go to a UK company. We would have been over there in droves if there was any chance. You have to have your vehicle registered there to be insured there or something. And, to reg the bike there, you need to live there for a portion of the year. I dunno. Loada sheet basically.

For a long time there was only one insurance company, Norwich Union. Till Carole Nash came along.

How about insuring it in an English mate's name, and getting you as a second rider put on?

Or even cleverer, why not start your own insurance company in Ireland? You could undercut the only 2 competition and probably have every biker on your books whithin two years! Where is Richard Branson when you need an entrepreneur?

Mine's £635tpft with 1 years ncb. Joys of being 17 and all that...

But 4000 pounds. WTF, do you have random mines in the road or something?

I knew Insurance in Ireland was bad, but not that bad

I usually get my first quote at over a grand
"Yes, young male, living in south london, no garrage, about 16,000 miles a year, commuting up into london, sports bike......hello? hello?"

But beat it down to about 1/2 that after a day on the phone, but if there's only 2 companies what can you do? Ask about restriction and find out if that would help? You can just de-restrict it for track days.
