View Full Version : Does a naked bike ACTUALLY make you ride slower
I kept getting"Oh sh*t" moments as I found myself significanlty over the limit riding to work this morning.
This is my first bike and I can remember when I felt that 60 was plenty quick enough
So my question is, if I switch to a naked bike would I ride slower for a bit due to the increased wind resistance, and then get used to that and be back up at silly speeds again?
Cheers

spot on
I find myself quite happily trundling around the motorway at about 90 ish when the conditions are right, and would probably go even faster if it wasn't for the deafening effect of the windblast, which drowns out the noise of the twin scorpions  . . . even with earplugs.
No, I assure you it doesn't  . However it does discourage you from going over 120 for any reasonable period of time.
.
There was an article on this a few months back in one of the magazines, Bike or Ride I can't remember. A naked only slows you down a bit if you want to, some owners swapped back to faired because they got annoyed with windblast.

Gotta agree with Jonboy.
If you'd seen Baldyman junior on the North south rideout you wouldn't even ask that question. He was the fastest of all the sv's and was giving all the big 1000cc sports bikes a run for there money.

You are absolutely right
I didnt find it made a difference. Not that my SVs had any great wind protection for me anyway.
Anything above 85 and I am generally aware of the windblast - but when at those speeds I am always aware I am over the limit regardless - and the eyes are searching for a reason to slow down.
I found by gearing my bike down by changing the sprocket it slowed me down a bit. The bike revs were higher so am more aware of this around town and at low speed areas so this did help.

i find it does.,... mind you , i have no need to go at 120, my license and life are too precious,
urs should be too,

If I was doing a lot of motorway riding, I'd want a faired bike. For town, I prefer a naked.
On my naked my top constant speed was 150km/h , more than that only when i have to overtake a car !
And 150kmh was very painful ... lots of bugs hitting me , and the wind blast was scary !
Usually just being 10/20 km/h faster than the cars , is all i need to fell quick
ps:150km = 90miles

Yes and Yes.
Without wishing to sound patronising. Its probably better if you just learn some self restraint and consciously make an effort to slow down.
Mind you I'm not saying its easy and nobody buys a bike to ride it slow

The bike mags would have you believe that riding without a bubble of perfect wind deflection around you limits you to a max of 30 minutes of 80mph
They are big girls
That is all

Generally I used to have a slightly higher crusing speed on the motorway on my half faired GPz than I do now on my Nekkid sv (not including sunday where I got into tree figures a couple of times  ). Round town though it doesn't really make a lot of difference.

120mph + on a naked bike would be fine,if only that invisible dude would stop pulling at the neck of your jacket from behind. :?

It doesn't seem to have slowed TSM down :) It might stop you from doing stupid speeds- if you were in the habit of doing 186mph on your Busa up the M6 or similiar then switching to a GSX1400 would most certainly slow you down. But if you're doing 100 everywhere, I doubt it would.
Don't slow me down any. The only thing that slows me down is the right wrist and the two brake levers.
Hmm hard to say but I think a naked may well slow you down.
I remember getting to around 120 on my naked Bandit and being pretty scared that I might not be able to hold on. That has to be the only time in a straightline where I have thought damn this is too fast.
Whereas when I used to do those speeds on the SVS I was bored sick moaning about the lack of power.
What I do know for sure is that I will never again ride a naked bike as the wind blast was soooo tiring and annoying plus its colder. Ok maybe if I get some little 125 commuter as a winter hack but other than that no way.

havin ridden my first naked bike at the annual run at the weekend. i found it a bit achy on the arms and neck when trying to keep up with dirty dog on motorway. had to give up at about 120 as i thought my head was going to fall off.
but the more I do it the more muscles i will build up. will have a neck arnold (funny name) would be proud of

Oh I don't know...
For some, windblast's part of biking but on the Hornet it used to irritate me. The present owner of the Hornet certainly doesn't seem to be slow - as some on AR06 will testify.

You'll still go plenty fast enough but not really into 3 figures (which is pretty reasonable for a bike really). I've done 135 on my GSX1400 but could not hold on any longer and had to back off.
It feels pretty comfy around 80, if you've only ever ridden faired bikes, you'd be surprised how smooth wind is without the buffetting of even a good fairing.
I've ridden accross the plains of Spain doing a constant 110 - 120 mph for at least an hour non stop. You really do get used to it.
I can travel now easily at 110 for as long as I like. You really do get used to it.

In the main, yes it probably was.
Actually, the bad weather followed us from the UK. We managed to just stay ahead of it all the way. We didn't really chose the best month to go so we were lucky. Although Messie wouldn't have said riding over snow capped mountains in the middle of a blizzard and covered in fog lucky.
It was an experience I shall not forget in a hurry. :)

It does indeed slow me down. I can't sustain it for too long. On the flipside , especially with Renthals fitted you may ride more like a hooligan  .
For the Ape et al that are able to do a constant 120 on a naked :notworthy: . I can't get along too well with clipons anymore but for me, that is one of the drawbacks of having high bars.
Northy , clipons on naked bike doesn't really slow you down much 9still easier to grip tank etc) so not surprised about TSM.
Cheers

I'll tell you what was really holding me back going fast on my naked for long periods of time was the noise. I think my helmet is really whistly, but as soon as I got some ear plugs, I can cruise at about 94-100 mph quite happily, it makes a really big difference. Muscularly its no problem. I also find my sv vibrates at about 86-89 mph, and so I ride either 82 or 92 usually.
Out of interest, what speed do people here usually ride at on the motorway? I guess I usually go about 82-94 mph.

well if I am going 81 I feel the need to speed up, and if I am going 95 I feel like I am going to get nicked for speeding :)

As everyone has said already it'll slow you down but not for long though.
After riding my 955i for 8 months then blasting around on Nuttys Raptor it hardly slowed me down at all
Got the Raptor up to 140 but couldn't keep it there long  felt like my head was going to be ripped from my shoulders!!!

I've found one thing that really does slow me down now- motorway riding without earplugs. Or rather, riding with them speedds me up. Just went up and down the M9 today at, eh, well, not saying really. But too fast. Usually a mixture of mechanical sympathy, and the ridiculous wind noise from my lid (Arai: Good helmets, ***** vents) keeps me down a bit.

Naaa, naked des not slow ya down, just ask anyone who has ever taken a V-Max out :P
All you end up doing is working out how to get your feet on the pillion pegs so u can lie flatter on the tank behind the clocks :)
Colin
It definitely slows you down, mostly due to the wind noise, even with plugs. On my bandit 650 last year I found it easy to cruise up the M4 at 120, (too easy). I could tell I was annoying the guy on the brand new Fazer 1000 that I was keeping up with mind!

I'd guess roughly 80-100, depnding on traffic etc.
70MPH is a feckin joke and needs changing.

Argh I hate reading year-old threads for 4 pages and realising I have already posted on it a year ago haha. My updated feeling: I want a faired, cos nakeds are blowy and loud for touring, I reckon it DOES slow you down for long journeys.
