I was wondering what would be the next bike of choice for all you SV loving folks out there?

I like sports bikes, but dont fancy 600cc IL4's, i'm a huge fan of V-twins so i'm leaning towards an RSV 1000.

What are your opinions?

Here's a reminder as to what the main contenders look like. (You know what an SV looks like)

Been riding for 8 years, 5 of which on SV's. Yep all year round and have probably covered over 50K miles on bikes.

Seconded.

I would have one if it wasn't for the fact that I need to take a pillion occasionally.

If you like bling and want the pose factor then go for the 999 - I think the mille is better VFM though.

Don't dismiss the SV1000 though - it is great value for the money and still bloody quick

Dont rule out GSXR-750. This years K6 has been getting some stonking reviews.

Saying that the RSV is a lovely bike. I narrowed it down to a choice of RSV, SV Thou or GSXR-750 I got a great deal on a K5 750 so thats what I went for.

If I had the moulah and the danglies for it..I'd definitely have one of these

But then again I'd love an RSV, but I can't touch the floor on the old ones

For my next bike at the moment i'm leaning towards a GSX-R 750. They're only 20bhp off the 1k AND it's in the 600 frame so it's lighter. There was a test in bike mag with a few different bikes (600s and thousands and the Gixxer 750).

Ok in a straight line the 1ks were faster on the long distance but round corners (On the track  ) the 750 kicked everythings @rse!!!!!

Then the plan after that is another GREAT bike that you've missed out - I'm gonna get a Honda SP-2

True Black Rider i'm sure the GSXR750 is a top bike but i had a go on a friends and it still seemed like a screamer all the power at the top end, sure it takes off further up the rev range, just not really my thing, think i'd want at least a litre IL4.

Yep again SP-2 is a great bike just seems a little bit dated, also i've sat on one and it feels a bit cramped, but then i am 6'3".

instigator
19-07-06, 04:34 PM
I'll be honest. I tried a 750 albeit slightly older but still a good 115bhp or more. I just felt inadequate in it's presence. Couldn't touch its limitations at all, it was no fun not being on the ball and being able to use it properly.

I jumped up in power too quickly and don't plan to get another il4 600cc bike (sports bike anyway) until I feel I can push my bike to it's limitations. The 33bhp sv was fantastic for me, had it a couple of months and I could get nearly the most out of it I felt.

Just saying really that you can't really ride the new range of 750cc+ sportsbikes unless you're preeeeeeetty damn good. And I ain't. Yet.

What model GSXR-750 did you try. I've got a K5. It makes power from 4500rpm all the way to the rev limiter. No flat spots. You get a shove at 7000rpm and then another one at 10000rpm.

I was put off an SP2 for the same reasons as you.

Not much :) But mainly it's that cover that's worth having for a heavily modified SV is hard to find. Only Carole Nash offered me an agreed value, loads of places do that for classics but not for newer bikes. I could insure it for far less, but that'd just cover the bassic bike, not the mods... And building another like mine'd set me back something like twice the cost of the bike itself, so it'd be a pretty poor option.

I wasnt really in the market for a new bike, but deciced to try a Kawasaki Z750S just for kicks - ended up buying a brand new one! I didnt want another 600 and I cant get on with the riding position of sports bikes, kind of rules out most bikes! Also a big factor for me was the cheap insurance, only £65 more than the SV 8) Also the 750 means that you get the grunt low down too, this is no rev happy screamer, but if you wind it up past 7000rpm it goes like a scalded cat. Sure some dont like the looks (personally I think it looks great) and its not without its faults, but overall its a stonking ride and I dont regret the move one bit! :D

My mate had his R6 written off in a SMIDSY last summer. He's just got a new RSV Mille this week to replace it. He's deeply unimpressed with it so far (still running in).
I was very surprised to say the least.

A Tuono Factory for me or perhaps the new Trumpet naked 675 when/if it gets here.

Now back in the real world.....i'll stick to the SV6, and do more to it.

I would go Blade for comfort over the RSV - better seating position - with a different colour scheme though as dont like Repsol colours. The standard RSV in white is nice too. Tuono performance is just as sharp, more comfortable, and cheaper to insure so it got my vote.

Yes I'd get the 06 ZX-10 personally if I had the money but there are newer models of other bikes out next year so I'd have to wait and see.

Being realistic about my next bike I would probably get a Gixxer 750 or another 600. I couldn't get on with the lack of top end rush on a V-Twin and I guess if you have the opposite problem with screaming four cylinders then those bikes would be no good for you.

Personally I don't reckon I'd go any quicker on a thou (until I got to 100+) as I can just about use full throttle on the six and keep the front down. Seems daft to pay loads more money to go the same speed but on half throttle with loads of wasted potential. Saying that I'd still want the thou for p*nis extension value but gotta wait for my insurance to come down first.

$tevo
23-07-06, 04:11 PM
The bike I would have chosen is a naked SV1K - purely because my back isn't up to clip-ons. Converting the S version - I know throttle cables would need to be replaced, alomg with maybe brake hoses - Is that all I'd need to swap over or are there other issues?
