Following a discussion on another thread about Steven Seagal being old and past it now, and after watching Jet Li in Unleashed last night, I was wondering who you all consider to be the best Martial Artist in films?

Never been a Seagal fan myself.................a tree trunk would have more acting ability than him.

I'm kinda fond of one of the probably less well known exponents. Mark Dacascos.

So who do you rate as the best, and who is the worst?

For comedic value it's probably Jackie Chan

For Aikido its the Segal - not never for his acting - you're right there lissa!

And was just begining to like you too.....

Segal is brill, if you watch his martial arts it's all "close quarter" stuff with very little room to move. His acting ain't great, but then neither is that from many Hollywood "stars" these days.

Aw, Jelster, I like you too :D

I honestly have nothing but admiration for the guy's fighting skill, Under Siege was brilliant, but he really is wooden when it comes to acting. I suppose that's what you get when the guy is first and foremost a Martial Artist, and an actor second. After all, Jet Li is hardly Mr Charisma either :D

Seagal only looks good in front of a camera when he isn't being choked out by Gene Lebell

Not that I would say that in front of him  8-[

Jackie Chan. Although if you want to see him at his pinnacle watch his Hong Kong based films not the hollywood pap he does now; Try

Police Story 1 & 2
Armour of God, Project Condor (armour of God 2)
Project A 1 & 2

the stunts have to be seen to be believed, couple this with the kung fu and the comedy and I dont think you can beat him.

Gotta be the real guys

Chow Yun Fat
Jet Li
Donnie Yen

The best martial arts films ARE the Chinese ones.

Once upon a time in China 1, 2 and 3
Hose of flying daggers
Hero
But NOT Shogun Assassin, a truely awful film!!

Anything directed by Kurosawa (I know he's Japanese) espescially 7 Samurai

House of flying daggers wasn't as good as Hero or Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon I thought, but it's still a cracking film.

I've not watched Shogun Assassin yet. Got it at home but haven't bothered watching it

1) Way of the dragon
2) Enter the dragon
3) Fist of fury

Honourable Mention to Chuck as well.

I watched Unleashed as well last week - what a dire film! The whole idea of Bob Hoskins training Jet Li to be his attack dog seemed, on the face of it, to be pure genius! However, after the opening it rapidly slid down the pan. :(

20-07-06, 12:10 PM
My Top 3 in no particular order are..

Bruce Lee
Jackie Chan
Steven Segal

Lee cos he exploded martials arts into the mainstream of the west and one cool MoFo, Chan cos he's so smooth and skilled and fearless in his stunts...and funny as hell, Segal cos he inpired me to get back into martial arts and discover the best art for me so far, Aikido.

My vote:
1) Bill Oddie - Ultimate Grand Master, Black Belt and Braces of Ecky Thump
2) The Bride - anyone who can puch their way out of a coffin and through 6 feet of earth gets my vote.
3) Chuck Norris - really don't want to upset him.

100 little known facts about Chuck Norris:

Q. If Bruce Lee and Batman had a fight, who would win?
A. Chuck Norris :?

Yep, Jackie was in Fist of Fury

I thought he was a henchman in "Enter the Dragon"? (Bruce gave him and his baddie buddies a damn good thrashing .... as you do).

It was just after he sent out a message from the radio room, whilst standing on a snake. Came out of the room, some cheeky chappie ripped his black top. ****ed him right off!

A few make-shift-inscrima-sticks-and-double-nunchuka-whirling moments later .... and job done.

Jackie and his bully-boy mates never stood a chance.

Of course, Mr Chan (not Charlie) may have improved since.

Your right Viney! He the man/dog ;)

A few of my faves are Bolo Yeung. A huge bloke who's normal fighting style is Tai Chi.
Biao Yuen, he worked a lot with Sammo and Jackie, a top top martial artist.
and Brandon Lee. Amazing in Rapid Fire, although the fight scenes were very similar to Police Story at time, and The Crow would have made him big.

Can't forget Bruce Lee though, brought it all to us Westerners.

Still so many great others out there, Tony Jaa has brought a whole new life to martial arts.

Gotta say I've never liked Chuck Norris (except for when he got battered by Bruce Lee), or Jean Claude Van Damme (why would you ever be in a Street Fighter film?) and who ever said David Carradine should be shot!

Bolo was also in Enter The Dragon. He was the mean looking chunky Oriental chap who Mr.Han favoured in the tournament.

(I was a big fan of this sh*t in me yoof! :P )

Did you know that Steven Seagal once broke the wrist of Sean Connery whist filming one of the early James Bond films because Connery was messing Seagal about while he was training him for a fight scene.
