View Full Version : Think i've seized it :-(
Coming home tonight, bit lost power and cut out.
Started again and sounded like someone smashing metal together.
Limped home, pulled the sump plug out to find 2-3 small bits of metal.
ebay is your friend in times like these.
ive seen some engines go for as little as 100 and some for around 800 quid.
the mass had the same problem. lets wait for him.
Not sure whether to burst out laughing or cry :? :smt093
ebay will be far cheaper than a breakers yard u know.
therre is a specialist sv breakers somewhere, i think they have a website.
Need it back on the road asap.. Every day i've got to catch the train now, extra hour each way travelling, quadruple the cost of running the bike, i hate it :(
take it you have no warranty ?
what about your car ?
if your really that stuck, you could always try repairing the engine yourself,
thats probably what i would to.
not that i know how to or anything
Nah, bought it off a family friend.
Will strip down the old engine, learn how it all works etc, guess i'll have a load of spares also.
Work in Central London plus car is off the road SORN at the moment.

IIRC The Mass bought a spare mini twin engine from Mike1234. But he had a pointy not a curvey.
I think that Falc might have some bits left over after his accident. He may or may not have an engine. It was a curvey.
Might be worth a PM
Bugger :(
Have you tried just dumping 3.5L of fresh oil in it to see if it runs?
If so might be worth running for a few minutes at various loads, then dumping that oil & filter out and re-filling. For the firt run you can use any old cheap mineral oil so for £15-£20 I'd give it a wirl, it may not last foever, but at least you don't then have to pick up the first overpriced lump that turns up?

2.6L
I did think of re-filling with oil and turning on. Shot down the road last night (shop shuts at 8 on thurs), picked some up, got home, then decided against it.
(went out in car, not bike).
Every search is coming to a dead end as well at the moment

:( It's probably ****ed though, new oil doesn't help once you've damaged a shell. BUT! Might not be that. Sounds like it but check your cam timing first, it's possible it's jumped time- failed cam chain tensioner or chain- and that your noise there is valves clashing. I don't think it'll be that, but it's well worth checking IMO. If it is, it's all repairable (PM me if it is, I've got valves, tensioners etc in the heap somewhere)
Good luck! There's a fair amount of scrap value in an SV engine if you can be bothered to break it down, for what it's worth- casings, barrels and heads, cams, clutch and tensioners all seem to get decent prices, I've bought whole broken engines for £40 and recouped the whole cost inc postage just from the cams and heads...

Limped home, pulled the sump plug out to find 2-3 small bits of metal. Looks like the oils run low without warning and the heats got to it. I only checked it a few weeks ago..
So, how much does a 2nd hand K2 SV 650 motor go for these days :(
Anyone else got any other ideas? I really think its buggered though
Let this be a lesson to you, There is a low oil indicator on the crankcase, use it.
I check my oil, like my tyre pressure before I ever wheel the bike out the garage. to go a "few weeks" between checks is simply asking for trouble

True. The oil check is a 'must do' for me even if I'm running late.
Cheers
Ben

People learn by their mistakes....

Cheers, bear that all in mind.
Thats all good to know also. But rather than stripping the original, if i can find another lump (unknown internal damage till its stripped, which I will do as i'd like to as a mini project... Hmmmmm go-kart + SV engine??). Or maybe turn the old engine into a table like they did on top gear a few yers back.
ITs jsut a serious bummer and like all things sods law related, had to come at a time when i could really do without. Still neededing to replace my jacket and boots yet for the winter too
Do not screw things up for yourself even more by driving an untaxed car....assuming it was your car you used to go get the oil

If it's top end, you could probably fix it in a long evening y'see, worth checking. But it's a wee bit of clutching at straws.
I've got two blown up engines in the garage still... Did have 3 but I skipped most of it after selling all the good bits :) One of these days I'm going to figure out which one's most salvagable and set about putting my spare crank in it. Because it's there :) Taking the other one to bits was pretty good, learned a lot.

In todays big brother style government society, wouldn't dare, esp not with all them cameras about.
Nahh, Corsa is off the road (both). The VXR is the daily drive.
NWind - Yeah, thats what im hoping to do, learn a lot more from tinkering...
Gonna try to get the engine out this weekend. Fun...... :?
I've sourced an engine through SVspares (BIG thanks Flaming Squirrel) that is about £320 inc VAT and only £35 to deliver to kent as well. Sound like a good buy?
Just about to check mileage etc...

Sounds good to me, you can go cheaper with private sales but you get a wee bit more security with a reputable breaker. Which they are, IMO.
Highest milage engine has 500 miles more than my current one, so i'd probably end up with one with less miles...
LEast i'll have a bucket load of spares as well
Im trying to find the funny side, last night was the depressed side...

There is no funny side :) But hey, if it'd seized solid you might have binned it too... Fine opportunity to do the double intake cam swap as well ;)
