Peter Henry

That list is flawed rather markedly, no Willie Wonker and the chocolate Factory? Pah! :P

Something tells me this is going to be a long thread  :P

As for the list, well as far as Im concerned I'll decide what constitutes a top 50 I should see not someone else who probably doesnt like the same films as me. For example, how can the list NOT have POTC I in it? Wheres Its a Wonderful Life and Harvey?

How does Caberet get a mention but Casablanca doesnt?

I agree with Mr Henry - that list is flawed. :P

Where does the list come from?

Movie experts have named the 50 films you should see before you die.

Number one is Francis Ford Coppola's 1979 Vietnam War classic Apocalypse Now.

The list was compiled by a panel of movie experts to mark the free-to-air launch of Film4.

Few of the entries are big screen blockbusters.

Second is The Apartment, Billy Wilder's 1960 comedy drama starring Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine.

Brazilian film City of God is third, followed by Roman Polanski's Chinatown.

Sexy beast, starring Ray Winstone and Sir Ben Kingsley, is fifth.

The top 10 is completed by 2001: A Space Odyssey, Alfred Hitchcock's North by Northwest, French flick A Bout de Souffle, Donnie Darko and Woody Allen's Manhattan.

Alien, Lost in Translation and The Shawshank Redemption just missed out on a top 10 place. The top 50 includes Pulp Fiction, Trainspotting, Erin Brockovich, The Breakfast Club and Scarface.

The list was chosen by a panel of experts including Lord Puttnam, producer of Chariots of Fire and Midnight Express.

Umh.. that list is remarkably similar to the list of films that Film 4 are showing over the next month or so.

Film 4 went free on Freeview last night..

Coincidence or not.

I think not..

Christ I miss Chanel 4.
And the Beeb.
And semi decent TV once in a while.

To be fair, this list is very middle of the road. And the indie films... Three colours blue?? Meh. Booooring. Oh I'm french and its ever so mysterious and sexual.

There are some really amazing films being made now.

Keep an eye out for Aki Kaurismäki films. (ie The Man Without a Past.) Also, Werner Herzog. (ie Grizzly Man)

Osama was another great one. (Siddiq Barmak)
Also, Vozvrashcheniye (The Return), by Andrei Zvyagintsev.

Shake Hands with the Devil, by Peter Raymont.
Dancer in the Dark, or Breaking the Waves etc by Lars von Trier.
Das Boot, by Wolfgang Petersen
Festen by Thomas Vinterberg, another dansk film. Amazing.

I dunno. The list goes on.

Go Lynn!  =D>

Plus, for all anti-authoritarians: Duck Soup and The Great Dictator. Total classics of the genre - poking fun at the (so called) untouchables!

So no 'The Great Escape' - that means it can't be Christmas yet!
I thought that was compulsory viewing, by everyone in the whole Universe.

Yeah. Ok, but I have no problem with people recomending films to me. I would never have seen Kaurismäki films had it not been for a Finnish girl I knew....
Or Von trier films if it wasnt for a norwegian girl... or etc

This list was very tame stuff though.

Midnight Cowboy's missing, innit.

A lesson to all the people who say "I'm gonna do x" and then sit on their behind moaning for the rest of their lives......

Cronos
