View Full Version : Guildford Pub
I know this has been mentioned before but I wanted to triple check if all were happy with the Anchor pub as a meeting point. Its a great pub and good location - so dont want to ruffle feathers but one thing I miss is standing around the bikes with drinks and having a natter about the various mods and features etc. Other thought was it would be nice if the car park was viewable so we could keep and eye on them as I feel they are a little vulnerable. We are all there because of the bikes so thought it a relevant point to bring up. Any thoughts or comments - or not up for discussion???

I'm not fussed where we go but I think others are quite attached to the anchor. Like you said a nice pub and good atomsohere but no where to natter over the bikes. I'm not fussed though and will happily go along with the crowd! :D
i like it cos its handy for everyone to get to, i see what you mean about the bikes tho, but if we could the tables nearest the car park it might be easier

I agree - it is easy to get too.
I also mentioned it as I saw an alternative the other day which maybe worth checking out. A pub in Chobham on the green/common on the way out of town - only noticed it as there was some other bikes there. Beer garden, parking on the side road, and some local roads to play on before/after.
I'm not fussed either, I don't think anyone's gonna mess with my bike when there's a Tuono in the car park.

Where in Chobham we come through there to get to the anchor?
Got a post code so we can check it out or anyone for that matter?
I think it is the Four Horses. Map (http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?client=public&search_result=&db=pc&lang=&keepicon=true&pc=GU248QP&advanced=&client=public&addr2=&quicksearch=GU24%208QP&addr3=&addr1=)
You'll know it when you see it - its just on the green and I think it had orange umbrellas out front with a picket fence - I saw it from the main road and have eaten there once a year or so ago.
Cool, have to run along to their sometime soon, nice avatar btw
And then nip round the corner to The Cloche Hat for some grub!*
*It's a little more that some grub 8)
Interesting fact: Ray Wilkins and Richard Keys sang Happy Birthday to my mother in law in there!

Oh yes! Fab food, great service - a really, really great place to dine. There's no doubt that taking her there will get you into her kni...errr...good books.

I think it should be changed as the current pub is:
A: a boring ride to get to
B: can't stand around the bikes chatting about the things
C: not really a good atmosphere to the place
Plus the people saying its handy on the way home are usually ther one's driving to it !!! (wayne omitted from this for good reason)
Also i feel this particular section (the guildford massive) now appear to be overly moderated, why do we need so many moderators ???
This used to be a good section in the days of Ben/Lee/Joe etc.
Not any more!

it's clique, I'm not fussed about the pub and I'll go along with a change if there is one
Sorry you feel like that jontoms ask the mods why they are mods of this section also like i said in my post i'm not bothered whether we move at all and no i'm not always first to stick the boot in i just happen to be on here alot since i moved down i met some good people in this section of the forum and class them as my friends
as for me riding a bike no i don't, doesn't mean i can't i have the licence i also have a huge lack of confidence too but as you have never spoken to me then you wouldn't know that would you
i guess theres always one exception to the rule most people i've met in the few months i've been here have been friendly

hay, let's chill a bit here!
True, this forum is focused on bikes, specifically SVs, but lack of SV has never been a barrier to anyone taking part. There are plenty of people on the org who don't yet have bikes, and several of us no longer have SVs, but it doesn't mean we can't be involved. And as for Tara she came all the way up to AR06 and took the trouble to spend the afternoon shopping for beers & BBQ stuff for the rest of the gang - so you can't really deny her a spot here.
As for the pub, I don't mind giving somewhere else a shot one week, and if we like it let's move the meet to there.

We chose the pub as a thread was put up months ago deciding what pub to go to and the anchor was chosen, we could go to any, just need to put it to a vote but feel we cant change the pub every 5 seconds just cause the roads have changed. The numbers we have had recently have proven that its been a popular place, but post a thread and see what the response is, simple as that, we havnt had a guildford massive meet in ages and just wanted to get one started and this is happening now, once we get the members we can then change the location if so be it like gmonsta has suggessted.
Heavly moderated maybe but i have spoken to Lee and he doesnt have a problem, he hadnt been on the forum in a while and it needed a mod, so why just have one when we can have two, its not like its a big deal tbh.
JonToms your post in my opinion is bang out of order, Tara is always about on the forum and she is contributing a post just like everyone else, everyone deserves a say not just those who ride a bike, a good chunk of members on the forum dont ride a bike let alone ride an SV, you yourself know that, people are on the forum because of the community feel.

Crikey. A bit harsh there Jontoms. I've only met up with the massive twice now but already feel like a part of the community. Tara and Wayne (amonst others) have made me feel very welcome. As for people being clicky well soemtimes people are shy and don't talk easily to newcomers. I can be quiet at times and that could be misconstrued as rude or whatever but it's never meant that way. Anyway, as I said I'll happily go along with the crowd on this one although I have to admit that a nicer route to the pub is always a bonus. But then people come from different directions so what may seem like a good route to us could be naff for others. Just my two peneth.
Only been to the Anchor once and my opinion is tainted... weather was crap and I was soaked... im sure it would of been great otherwise :) Could see wanting to go somewhere else during winter tho

Hey JonToms,
Aren't you taking this a bit too far? I thought that this is what the forum is for - to discuss biking-related issues. Loads of people without bikes use this forum and this is the first time I see this kind of nonconstructive dig at a person in the short time I've been a member.
Even if Tara doesn't have a bike at the moment, she's still coming on the ride outs and is part of it. Therefore she should have a say regardless.

PS - I'm so glad that you're not a moderator here and I'm sure other on here will agree :P

whoaaa guys, lets just chill a bit shall we?
there is no need for personal attacks, i think there has been enough of that on the forum in the past few weeks.
Lots of people on the forum don't have a bike. that doesn't mean that they're not welcome does it? The GM is open to anyone that wants to come along whether they ride, drive, walk or fly in!! As for people driving in there are many reasons for that the most obvious is falc and Tara coming in the car as he had several broken/cracked ribs and couldn't really ride like that, would you?
Tha anchor was chosen after a few of us (frequent users) decided that we wanted the guildford massive to live upto its name a bit. We discussed it on here and came to the decision that we wanted a social meet rather than a ride out every time. Tha anchor was also chosen for its ease of access for most members of the GM and others (viney and rictus for example)
So what you're saying is you have to be standing next to your bike to talk about it?
As for them being vulnerable, how are they? Do you always park where you can see it?
As for the mods situation whats the big deal about that?
And dont forget you may be scaring newbies off! If i didnt know better I wouldnt want to come to a guildford meetup wiht all this hostality! :P

So who's up for a change then? anyone?? Jontoms? No? Ah thats a shame. I guess I'll crawl back to my cave then...
Please guys - this has got out of hand and JT I am sorry i havent met you before as we need some character sometime and I think (some of) your input is good in that it stirs some life into us.
In the end what are you trying to achieve here - a large GM community is what I am thinking? I think JT's points on the location echo mine and the main reason I have heard for staying is its a convenient location. Does that mean because everyone knows how to get there now?
My suggestion on the location is 10mins up the road from where it is now and it was just a suggestion based on what I know in the area. If you know of others that can keep everyone happy isnt it worth considering to get where you want the GM at? <Goes>
OK, I think we should let everything lie regarding the previous, whats been said has been said and we should get back to talking about the new pub location.
Theres a poll at the top of the page so if you want to vote go right ahead. We could try this pub location out next week if everyone is up for that.

Sounds OK to me also why not open it up a bit has anyone else any other suggestions - I have no idea i only know a handful of pubs, the Golden retriever at Crowthorne, Checkers at Yately and the heron on the lake i have no idea where that is but they are all in this direction over here and Checkers is too small

PS Abyss did ya get home ok on Friday?
Maybe thats the @ssh*le in me !!!
JonToms, there's an @ssh*le in everyone. It just depends on how many layers need removing before it's uncovered and everyone else sees it.
It's always nice to have a change now and again so I say new pub next week and if it's rubbish we can always keep looking or go back to the anchor.

i think as falc has said what has been said has been said, end of story. Jon has apologised and that is good enough for me and i think falc and Tara are happy with that as well.
As for a new meeting venue as previously stated that is an option and a new thread will be started accordingly.

I agree with Jester, I dont really care :D
Yep, was fine once over the river (after your crazy riding through town) - Thanks :D
In my opinion, at the anchor the atmosphere is a bit sh*t and the roads that lead to it are even worse. If it werent for the socialising i definately would not come. So, to a certain extent, although i have not heard the full story, i'll have to agree with jontoms about the destination. It does appear to be a destination that you would drive to in the car or somewhere you would take your girlfriend/wife for a nice quiet nite out. As for a biking pub, no way! Therefore i would definately vote for a change!
Overall the 'guildford massive' has come on heaps and bounds it seems which is good but there are a few things that are making this part of the forum lose its appeal to me.
Lets give this four horses a go that Gmonsta recommended then, suggest a pub and lets see what its like, just gotta make sure its easy for other ppl to get to also imo

Although admittedly not from the Guildford area I’ve a few thoughts on the subject,
The current location has easy access back up into the smoke, so you’re more likely to have other folk visit.
Even with my dodge knees, missing toes & bad hip I’m capable of walking the 10 yards to the car park to see a bike.
It’s the people who make the meet, not the location.
Both the Selkent & Soho meets are not in great ride out destinations (without a good deal of work behind it), but have good attendance because they are fixed location & dates.
The surest way to kill a regular meeting is to chop & change venue (Essex crowd tried that).
You’ll never keep everyone happy, and go nuts if you try.
A transient location with give the perception of a transient meet, so you’ll lose attendance in the long run.
Just my 2p worth.
Cheers Mark.

I have to agree withy mark on this one, it was picked for its location, making it easy for lots of people to attend which as far as i'm aware was the idea behind making it a social meet? And by changing the venue that may disuade people coming along.
As for saying it's not a biking pub, what exactly is a pub? What are you looking for in a pub? It's about the people at the meet not the other pub users etc. Do we really need to be sitting right next to our bikes to talk about any mods done to it etc, as Mark said even he can manage to walk that far to the car park from the anchor.
And being a fairly quiet pub it means we always get a table!!!!!
I'm voting to stick with the anchor
DD i agree with you and Rictus you know that, but the guys have voted for a change, how about we try the place gmonsta suggested and discuss it next week when we meet? just a suggestion

i realise im not a member of this group, just a tourist.
as its a social event i dont feel you need good riding roads to or from the pub.
location - close to lots of people which has been proved with such good attendance.
the ability to get a table is quite important if you want to sit and chat - you can do this at this pub.
if lots of bikers turn up does that not constitute it being a biker pub?
it seems to me everyone was fairly happy with this pub until a day ago. are you going to change the location every time someone throws toys from pram. it needs to be the same pub so when people have not been on site for a while they know that on a thursday night they can head to a certain pub and meet up with some old faces.
but before i get shot down in poop i know i have no say, just giving an outsiders point of view. feel free to ignore me, - most people do lol

For what it's worth, I thought it was a crap pub - but as pointed out, it's not the pub that matters it the people :grouphug:
More than happy to try a new one . . . now I know what day to turn up
I really dont want to be the catalyst of the GM falling out about trying a different location. Having looked through the last few posts I'm assuming that that if by trying a different location up the road then people wont attend in the future then I think we should leave it where it is (as I am sure those that voted yes would). This wasn't the objectives of the initial suggestion.

Gmonsta - we know what the aim of your post was, why don't we try the one you sugested and discuss it there next thursday depending on what the pub is like?

I have no problem looking for a different location, if it's biking roads people want then fair enough but will they still be great biking roads in winter when it's cold, dark, probably wet, slippery etc?
But are we going to change again when a few people decide that they are bored of the roads that lead to the new pub and want to go on different roads?
To keep chopping and changing the pub meet location, i personally think that will reck the meet and numbers will possibly fall. As i previously said it's the people that make the meet not the venue. That's my view anyway.
How about we make it a meet at a mcdonalds? you can sit by a window and look at the bikes from there then if you want???? We could probably get a table next to the kiddies with their 'peds parked outside 'scuse the sarcasm
I agree chopping and changing all the time is wrong and yeah i guess some will get bored with the roads and i agree with what you say about winter too i for one will still turn up in a car come december and more than likely november if Falc wants to ride in winter so be it.
so whats the verdict then new place next week or stick with the old?
As I've kept saying the pub now is alright, not great but not bad either. If we do change we have to be sure the next pub is definitely better for the majority and it has to be a permanent change.
I don't want to be going to a different pub every meet because some people aren't happy with it. That will definitely make people not attend.
Gmonsta - we know what the aim of your post was, why don't we try the one you sugested and discuss it there next thursday depending on what the pub is like?
If we do try the new pub to see what it's like can we go on the alternate Thursday so we don't lose going to the Anchor every fortnight until we are sure. One extra meet one Thursday this month won't affect our normal meet as much as changing venue for one meet. Just a suggestion.

I would just like to point out that the G massive wasnt that at all for a long while, and its not until recently that there has been some activity, and i think thats down to the new blood in here. We had to move meets because we got booted out of the other one. Selkents venue isnt exactly the greatest, but it serves food and drink, has a beer garden, and a car park t park the bikes. Ok, so you cant see them, but its a 5 second walk there and back. The roads to there are not exactly mindblowing, but that was never a consideration. Its fairly central and easy to find, which was a consideration.
I have never seen the attraction of standing around kicking tyres and that as said, its a social event more than anything.
I like the Anchor. I like its location, and ease of finding it, and also its good for us selkenters and such like to pop along. But, its your venue and meet, just dont kill it so soon after its got its feet off the ground.

Yer I agree with the comments. It depends what people want out of a meet. Theres rideouts which are all about the bikes with various pub stops with the route changing often or theres the meet ups which are more about the social aspect and having a drink.
But aside from the location the meet has really picked up, last week we must have had the biggest turn out ever even though it was ****ing down with rain. I think we have a really good meet here and thats down to everyone here so if we change the venue it has to be permenant and the majority agree to it. If not then we stick with the anchor.
OK - so Ill pop down this evening and have a decent look as it maybe crapola anyway. Guys, PM me if you want to hook up and we can work out a time.
long as the new place serves food and is alright for us soho (or in my case half and half) people to get to.

hmmm not looking good for the anchor so far then :( shame cos it's ba nice pub with plenty of parking, good food and there is no problem with actually getting somewhere to sit when you get there.
Oh well guess i'm being out voted on this one at the moment.
I think we should keep next weeks meet at the anchor and discuss the possible change then
I'm not going back to the four Horseshoes. Details in other thread soon.

It's looking totally fine for the Anchor, having been to the 4 horseshoes
But still fine trying other pubs as well.
