i have just been reading two wheels only magazine and they have got a used bike review on the sv650/s. one of the paragraphs mentions that Suzuki decided to retard the ignition in second and third gears in order to get through the drive by noise tests and that this shaves off a little power, it then goes on to say that some owners have sorted this by snipping some wires at the ignition controller under the tank ( they tell you which colour ones to cut, apparently its two wires that go to the switch in the gearbox ). I was wondering if anyone out there has done this mod and if so was there a noticeable difference in power in second and third gears sorry if this subject has been covered before but its the first Ive heard of it : :D

Covered many times.

Do a search.

Search for TRE, you'll get good results :)

Does this really work?

done a search but just wondering do i need the nikko gizmo or similar or can i just cut the wires without problems

This might come up in the search, so: most people say the box makes no difference, but Rictus01 reckons it does. I'm on the fence- I felt no difference when I did it anyway, but Rictus isn't daft. Quite happily say that if there's a difference, it's not enough to justify the price though.

i beleave that rictus was talking about the Nicco G-Pack attachment.

Bobsere Look for How to Disable the Ignition Retard Mechanism on the SV on the main site

TBH no racers use it and as its a cheap and fairly easy mod to do if it was worth it then they would be doing it. TBH you'd be lucky to notice the difference and i have seen plenty of bikes running rough with the mod than running better.

Spend your money on a larger tooth rear sprocket some tank raisers and an air filter far better gains for your money and the extra 2 teeth on the rear sprocket will give you more umph you will be smiling

Since the retard works only in 2nd and 3rd, and since it doesn't work at WOT, racers don't find it useful. After having tried it both ways on a 1st gen bike what I can say is that it improves gas mileage in city driving. Dyno results are well within normal error, so I don't know if it really produces more power or not. And if it does, it's in a limited range.

1st and 2nd generations are different, so beware which wires you clip.

as the 'main site how to' is for the Curvy, can you tell us which are the wires on a pointy to cut?
Thanks

Could you or Jonboy please explain why this mod cannot be achieved by riding in a lower gear? Or do you accept it is only effective in first gear?

Or fit NOS then you get a HP boost

Put it this way... I think the RRP of the G-Pack is £90. By contrast, a set of carbed model intake cams is around £50, and instead of giving you a ghost of more power, sticking those in the exhaust side gives you more power everywhere, average of around 5bhp, as well as a longer peak. Spending money on a g-pack does not strike me as wise.

Because when you do the mod and ride in a lower gear it would still pull harder than riding in a lower gear on std gearing. Thats why racers change their gearing to suit different tracks. At snett where i want max top end revs i use a 15/44. At Lydden where i want maximum low down punch i use 14/46

Thanks, that helps, it's just a case of matching your gearing to the circumstances you mostly ride in.

I've disconnected the two wires from the gearbox, cheaper than buying a "box". I reckon it depends on how aggresive you ride as to whether you'll feel any difference.

The solution is obvious: Nail it everywhere instead of pansying about at low revs! 8)

http://www.sv650.org/ig_retard/ignition_mod.htm

I did the same mod, but took the wires out of the CDI unit, it is much less faffing as you don’t need to take the tank off etc.

Its free to do, the logic is sound, so I see no reason NOT to do it. I wouldn’t pay for one of the boxes when I could disconnect wires for free …

Anyway, that is for a curvy, (do you have pointy or curvy?) I don’t think it is as straightforward for the pointy?? I think you can still do it, but you need appropriate resistors. Again do search on TRE or hopefully someone will be along soon to shed light on the mod for the pointy??

do you feel a big difference now after doing this mod???
