Does anyone have have advice on how to clean up some of this mess. I have searched the forms and only found reference to tank rust. 2000 Curvy with 17k miles. I know the messed up fork polish is something I must live with on the 1st gens. It's not terribly bad, but it bothers me. I will Link some pictures of it when I get home. Seems the previous owner had some rainy encounters. Gas tank seems fine. I was thinking of just using a drill with one of those steel brush attachments, maybe thats a bit harsh though.

Just treat the rust with a product like rust stop, or the yankee equivelant.

Try ACF50, it was apparently developed by the US navy and has rust inhibitors and reversers (according to the tin!) I have ridden through a Manchester winter (Manchester was built in the wettest part of England on purpose for the cotton mills) and just the ACF50 has kept it looking nearly brand new.

You don't need to live with pitted forks, powdercoating is inexpensive- or you can spray it, but that tends not to last. It cost me £20UK to get both legs powdercoated black, plus the strip and rebuild time and a few consumables like fork oil, etc. Bargain, makes a huge difference to the look. ADF50 is good too- or better yet, when it's a removable part like a subframe, pull it off, clean it up and either get it coated or spray it with something like Chassis Black.

Where are you actually experiencing this rust? I'm a little unclear.

Here is a pic. Most all of the rust is isloated here for some reason.http://upload4.postimage.org/702238/CIMG1345.jpg (http://upload4.postimage.org/702238/photo_hosting.html)

Tarnation, that's ugly! Well, OK, here's what I'd do. If you fit braided hoses, you can dispense with all of the rusty brake fittings, along with the thing they attach to. The hoses are coming up to their replacement schedule anyway. The horn bracket should be easy to source a nicer one, from someone who's replaced the horn, and the bottom yoke... Well, I'd replace it, personally, but that's your call. You could remove the rust, but it'll come back unless you paint it with something- hammerite would do the trick I'm sure.

It's very rare to see corrosion like that on a 1st gen, let alone one with only 17K on it. I've seen bikes with 5 times the miles without any of that.
