View Full Version : New exhaust? What do you think?

Not like me to post a work in progress :) But I thought I'd make an exception, since this is, I think, a first and I want to get it out before someoen else nicks it (naming, no names, Ben) I've been eyeing up the new R6 stubby cans, and a Micron came by on Ebay very cheap so I thought I'd see how it works out...

Pics:

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i264/Northwindlowlander/sidelow.jpg

One thing to note, I have no idea how it'd work out with a standard system, but with the WRP it fits almost perfectly. I've bodged it on with, yes, 2 cable ties and some silicon sealant, because I'm that professional, and the fit is amazingly good. There's absolutely no ground clearance issues:

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i264/Northwindlowlander/exposed.jpg

Or swingarm clearance problems:

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i264/Northwindlowlander/closerear.jpg

Cons? Looks weird, to my eyes. But, as part of a longer term plan it'll stop looking weird I think. It sounds like rubbish, because it's a Micron and they all do ;) The overrun is just nasty. I've resealed the join and hopefully it'll help that. It's not as loud as you'd think mind, still quieter than a Scorp with the baffle out or an ART, but louder than my old can was. Fuelling wise, too early to say for sure but it seems happy.

My take is, it looks a little goofy with the front fairing on. Any thoughts?

Cool, looks alright to me, all you need are some race numbers, or maybe not.

Bboy: Why wouldn't it work on a pointy?

Law: Too curvy :) But, there's loads of options for these wee R6/GSXR cans. I don't actually like the Micron, I'm irrationally prejudiced against the brand, so here's some others:

Laser:
http://www.laserexhausts.co.uk/uploads/images/XTREMEGPSI.jpg
(I hate the way most Lasers sound, but they do look magic)

Scorpion:

Arrow:

But my personal favourite, step up Akrapovic, with an allegedly road-legal...
http://www.carpimoto.it/Images/Products/Detail/a%5Cak_SM-Y6SO6T_D.jpg

Gorgeous, that... Very, very tempted. The best bit is, they're not expensive, even the Akra is around £200.

I had had a similar thought as I think the 2006 R6 stubby exhaust looks great. Interestingly it looks alot longer on your SV than on the R6? I have a pointy & can't see why it would look wrong on one. Have to keep my eyes open now for any more coming up on ebay. Well done anyway.

sound clip, sound clip? looks good! and i'm not really a fan of them new short exhausts.

northwind
26-07-06, 08:29 PM
Don't realy have the potential to record it just now :( My camera's mic just clips. It sounds like it's carb icing :) If you've heard that, you'll know what I mean, really flat and barky.

It does look longer... The WRP headers go further back than the R6 one does. Works out quite well I think.

Busted! I've got a new one, just needs some proper clearcoat and I'm too disorganised to get it done. Some day soon! Then the Grinch can finally have the old, ****ed one ;)

Um, most exhaust cans are round anyway.

That akra one is very very nice, I saw a Yoshi for a GSXR which was nice as well. Makes me want to go out and get a Gixxer cos the cans cost less.

Yep, but this one's sinuous :) Most obvious from the side/low pic, it bends up in the middle. There's others that'd work better for it I think, the Lasers would be nice on anything.

I've not been able to find pics of the Yoshi R-55...

Oi, this is "admire my exhaust", not "Slag my undertray and subframe"! I've got another one in the garage with a few wee mods that's to get sprayed or coated some day and fitted, but it's a low priority. That one's crash damaged so the thing rots like a... rotty thing.

I think it'll all hinge on that and how you mount the hanger in the looks department.

Oh... while we are nitpicking :) , your chicken strips are huuuge especially the front. Easily sorted with a sanding block :P

Now where is that Akra catalogue

Right- no more slagging of:

My undertray
My rusty exhaust
My manky footpegs
My subframe
The fact that I've got no left rear indicator
My massive chicken strips
My leaky water pump cover
Or for that matter, my leaky clutch cover
Or the fact that my Scottoiler tube's got a big hole in
Or that my immobiliser touchkey's fallen off again.
Or the sheared bolts on the mudguard

You may, however, slag my extremely small penis.

I was going to say nice things about your new exhaust, but then after this clear slight upon my manhood:
Good point. I need an SV thou to compensate
You can get stuffed.

Also:

Your undertray is minging.
Your exhaust is rusty.
Your footpegs are manky.
Your subframe is a disgrace.
You've got no left rear indicator.
You've got massive chicken strips - you tart.
Your water pump is leaking.
So's your clutch cover.
Your Scottoiler tube's got a big hole in it.
Your immobiliser touchkey's fallen off - again.
You've sheared bolts on your mudguard.

When I've seen a few more faults I'll be back to put you straight about them too.

Dude that's horific, sounds like a black and decker drill

Hopefully your sounds better than that Gixer Northy.

northwind
27-07-06, 01:13 PM
I can't listen to it just now, but I bet you a pound it doesn't :) Below 3000rpm it sounds like a supermoto, sorted the horrible overrun so now it's just bad, and it's so flat at constant revs, just plain nasty. But then, I'm very choosy (this is my 5th end can, and the last one got cut up about 3 tiems to tune the sounds :) )

Jase, I reckon if it's worth doing it's worth doing right- if I can't figure out some way to mount it to the rearset mounting bolts, I'll get a whole hanger with an extension made up. But first, I need to find a can that doesn't sound like a disaster.

COOL, hoiw about a gsxr 1000 k3 race can, somebody did a real small stubby for them now that would look better on the pointy - triangles and all. I'll try and find a limk. mmm should really lookmat all the posts b4 making comments the one i had in mind for a pointy is the race fit, see above.

27-07-06, 03:03 PM
isn't it insanely loud? I thought tht the r6 had the bulk of the silencer/silencing under the engine, & that the stubby bit you can see was just an end-pipe. doesn't putting it on in place of a can on an SV means you get minimal silencing?

You'd think so... But it's still quieter than a lot of SV race cans. I think maybe the R6 needs more baffling, what with being a stupidly high speed engine with wild cams... This one isn't stealthy, but I reckon it's quieter than most of tehe bikes on the AR.

Racefit do a nice one for the GSXR thou... Don't know if it'd fit though. It'd definately look better on a pointy.

to be fair tho it really is only a bit of shaped pipe it has no baffles or anything. how loud would that be.

The akra comes with the biggest removable baffle in the world :) It's like a russian doll, a little exhaust pipe that fits inside a bigger exhaust pipe.

Is the paint a satin finish or is that just the way the photo came out?

Nah, it's just not very well finished yet ;) I sprayed it with singlepack clear coat, which is pretty soft, too soft for a daily-use bike really- so rather than polish it up now, Big Al's offered to spray some proper 2-pack over it to give it a durable finish, and we'll get it properly shiny then. I rather like it as it is, mind, but it's a bit inconsistent.

Iain51
28-07-06, 12:43 PM
:( It is, I think, the satin/matt finish that I like! So don't change it!!

28-07-06, 12:48 PM
First time I took it out, Carelesschicka's better half said "It looks like a tank". And I heard someone (not sure who) on the rideout say "It looks like a 70s Leyland". Neither of these things, i think, is very flattering :) But it'll never be shiny, I don't do shiny.

Sudoxe, my bike gets bad-tempered if I don't attach a new bit at least once a week :)

Am i missing out on something? I've never used ebay :-k

It depends what you're trying to do, and how... risk averse you are :) For me, I like to do everything as cheap as possible- so for instance, I own 2 WRP race systems, one all titanium and one with stainless headers and a titanium end can. The former cost £200, the latter £80, there's people on here that have paid more for one end can new.

Or this here... One Micron bought for under £100. Turns out it'll fit and look great, but I don't like the sound- so, I'll clean it bcak up, and despite it having done a few hundred miles now and having some marks from the fitting, I'll make most of the money back on resale most likely. And then, I get an Akra, slightly used, for about half of RRP.

Likewise, I put together my GSXR front end for less than I sold the SV bits for :) But equally, I could have spent £100 on a wheel and discovered it was bent, and spent 3 months chasing after a refund.

But then, I'm a cautious buyer, and I've been playing the game for long enough to know how to avoid getting burnt, most of the time :) Ebay's a great tool for the wary...
