A V5 engine, 220bhp and looks the dogs ????

No, it's not an RCV, it's my new new cage, Ford Focus ST.

Pictures aren't great as they were taken with my phone, and the "advertising" is coming off the back too....

Pick it up next Saturday, in time to take it to WSB at Brands on Sunday.

I mean I knew that the dealer's name on the number plate was pretty normal, but plastered all over the car like that? I'd take it straight back!

OK. OK. so it's an IL5, but it has got a turbo

Book speed is 154,
0-100 km/h 0-60 mph (sec) 6.4
Flexibility 50-100 km/h (4 th ) (sec) 6.5

The Astra VXR is quicker in a straight line, but doesn't have the poise of the ST. I've looked at a number of diffrent cars, Mazda 6 MPS, Audi A3/S3, A4 convertible, Audi TT, Golf GTi, Honda Civic Type R (yuk!), and nothing comes close for all round every day use, with that ability to give me something extra when I want it too, AND give a decent level of refinement as well.

But if you'd have gone for a new style Honda Civic then you could have had lovely blue neon lights in the driver's footwell.

Oh.

Hang on.

You said decent level of refinement. My bad.

Ive never been a big ford fan, in fact I could be quoted as saying I'd never get one. Even I'm starting to think that ford are getting it right now. The competition is so fierce that noone can afford to make a crap car anymore. Add to that the attempts already made to revive the sports ford division through the focus and you can see why this revision is so special. :)

I hope it treats you well, it certainly looks the part. Don't suppose you could go that far wrong with the focus. How did it compare with the prices of the others though (cheeky I know!)? I read that you could get a good one for 20K or thereabouts, that seems good when compared to the ridiculous price of the golfs presently. My Brother in laws bro has just put his name down for an R32 with the DSG and that set him back 26K. I thought the S3 would be about the same price too. As for the Type-R, I liked the older ones but the new ones are a step too far for me, the price for the last of the old shapes are good though and I like the way they drive.

I dont think the hot hatch has much further to go than the ST and the VXR, theres only so much power you can force through the front end before it becomes uncontrollable! Once youve had a good blast come back and let us know what its like!

Nice one, you cant beat the feeling of having a new machine! :driving:

Well I can't wait to pick it up.... Got another week but I'm going to be there at 9:30 next Saturday, get the keys and then take it for a drive up the A413, which is easy to get to from Uxbridge.

Fraser, it's a replacement for my 5 year old Vectra SRi (which is still a nice motor btw) and it wasn't as expensive as you may think, especially as I got a decent P/X on the Vecci. It's a 7 month old Demonstrator with 9k on the clock, they threw in the next service FOC too.

I've been saving for a while and Ford have this great payment plan where you put down a large'ish deposit (35%), pay the interest off in one go, and then no more payments untill the end of the term, (2 or 3 years) when you are left with a "baloon" payment of the balance which you can either pay off and keep the car, PX the car for something else, or refinance the outstanding balance. It's a good scheme. We're looking to save during the 2 year term so we can just pay the balance off at the end.

I looked at a number of different cars

Honda (obviously) bothe the Civic type "R" and the Accord type "S". Civic was awful, lots of go but far too much engine/road noise and no refinement in the cabin, and the Accord was a bit too similar to my Vectra.

VW - Golf GTi - Just didn't excite me, nice drive, but not as quick as the Focus and a bit "bland" inside.

Audi A3/S3 - finding a decent S3 isn't easy, and to be honest, they're very expensive for what they are. Also looked at a TT, but the view from the cabin is pants.

Mazda 6 MPS - This came close, 265bhp 4WD and very understated, but I could only find new ones, and at £24k that was out of my league.

Astra VXR - I just didn't like it, it seemed like an Astra SRi that had been "chaved up" (Sorry Daimo...) It didn't appeal to me at all, even though I am a big Vx fan.

Falc, as for the Fiesta ST, it does look a bit over done but my Mrs has a 1.4 Fiesta "Black" which is great fun to drive, very sharp steering and decent brakes. Putting a 2 litre lump with beefed up brafes & suspension must make it a scream, but it's a bit small for me.

Hopefully, I'll be back on the bike in a couple of weeks though - I had to have some minor surgery which has given me a few complications so I can't ride at the moment

I'll be at Brands next Sunday, in the new motor :P

Lovely looking car mate, was sat in one at the Motor show and think that Ford have come a long way. If i was in the market for a hot hatch, i probably would have waited to see what the new type r was going to be like as i saw that in London and thought it looked the danglies. Think for me it would be between that, the focus st and the s3 being the expensive option

Not according to this site:-

btcc winners (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_BTCC_champions)

The saloon won in 1998.

I went to Thruxton in 1994 to see the estates race in their first season - amazing to watch those huge lumps being thrown about.

Jelster,

What does it go like?

I've driven a few 5-pot turbo Volvic's,and don't get me wrong,they are fast.
But not 'Quick' if you see what I mean?!

I think if I remember rightly that Ford's tuning bods have 're-tuned' the lump to make it more revvy/fun!? Have they?

Used to be really into the Ford scene with the R.S. stuff,I like the ST range, but sort of lost interest in Ford as a company.

I like them in the Electric Orange flavour best,Red 2nd place. All the other colours don't show the car off enough.

They basically banned the estates when the rear wing rules were brought in- the wings had to be lower than the roof of the car, and so the estates couldn't fit one.

The electric orange is best, though :)

I had about 20 mins in yesterday, but that was split between me & the mrs (Have to get her buy in you see). It's been a while since I've driven a car with a blower, so it took a little to get used to.

No body roll...... I went into some bends that I take my Veccy through and it just didn't move.

Performance - 0-62 in 6.5, get it just under 4k and poke the gas and itakes off....

Strange comment that, as the thing really comes on song between 4k & 6k. I'll be able to make a more informed comment on Saturday :driving:

Yeah i wasnt expecting him to say it either, he told me he spoke to the mechanic at Ford as asked him why it was like that/was it broken or tight from being run in, and the mechanic told him they are all like that. He had driven the RX8 before, i just rekon is wasnt as exciting (and he wanted the RX8)
