View Full Version : My first off

Well I've been tweaking my bike at the w/e.
I've nicely evened up the left side to look like the right
FULL OF SCRATCHES!!
At least I had my first at a track day and not a bike safe day.
But maybe that means at should have been at the other one from what I choose?

My day started with a horrible session on track, didn't know what I was doing and had no confidence and couldn't wait for the session to finish.
So I sought out the instructor for the second session. I felt it was 100% better, but he still told me I was **** and I was going to crash if I kept riding like that.
Well as the day progressed, I got better and my confidence was building all the time until the instructor was happy with me and said there was nothing else he could tell me.
Well it was typical last session of the day and my confidence had built up until I thought my standard Dunlop 220's were invincible, at least going straight ahead and as I squeezed on the front brake for my favourite corner (the only left hander) as late as possible to stop Rictus from passing me, I squeezed too hard, locked up the front and in a split second it washed out from under me, going down on it's left side with me sliding down the track to the left of it. As soon as I stopped I rushed up to get off the track, using the bike as cover from Samnooshka bearing down on me. Got to the tyre wall and lay down. The Marshall was at me in an instant, and the Ambulance and recovery van not long after.

Injuries;
1) Must of landed on my left ankle bone because it hurts a lot, the medic said it might be broken or chipped or something, even though I can walk on it (all be it, doing an impression of Mr Toad)
So I'll get it X-rayed tomorrow. Just as well I've just bought an automatic Volvo (thanks Will)
2) Mummy I've grazed ma knee! :smt022
At least it's nice and clean thanks to my leathers and they didn't have to get the scrubbing brush out. What's the saying Big Ape?
3) Sunburn
That's it

Bike;
From the front - Headlights no scratches thanks to gaffa tape but pushed in from the fairing a touch, so will have to get the fairing off to see what's wrong.
Speaking of fairing, it's now scrapped clean through on the left side, slightly worse than the right was anyway, plus it's pushed in at the back left side bending the bracket and probably cracked at the screw hole.
Left clip-on pushed back snapping locator lug clean off, and no I can't drill a hole for a bolt because it's all gone.
Radiator bent into an abstract shape. Riding home I was watching the temperature gauge steadily climbing from 83 through 104.1, 104.2, 104.3, 104.4, 108 then I realised that's the trip meter Doh! the temperature was fine in the 80's
Tank now has a light scratch on it. Gear lever has the rubber head snapped off - LIKE THAT WOULD EVER HAVE SURVIVED!. It also seems to be pushed down and bit mashed up but the rest of the foot peg seems to be OK. Scratches to the rear plastic.
And I now have cruise control!
The throttle doesn't return.

So offers of help and advice most welcome! :help::D

After getting it road worthy - Headlights, clip-on and 'drill and bolt' gear lever, I'll have to decide about the pretty things. I may have to give up my dream of fitting fairing lowers now and this may actually save me money instead of costing me

A big :salut: to
Weaslz for the Knee sliders - I got my knee down once, rapidly followed by my chin!
And for enough petrol to go out on the last session and trash myself and my bike :salut: buddy!
The instructor for helping me no end. I don't think my crash was the one predicted by him earlier, but a last session crash that me as a person was going to have sooner or later, so it might as well be sooner and I seem to have gotten away with it rather lightly.
The medical team for looking after me and not amputating as suggested by one
Rigor for the reassurance.
Deaas for bandage & gear lever fix, not that it worked.
TSM for putting my bike in 6th gear (and wondering why he was stalling it) I managed to get home without it slowing me down to much - WHO NEEDS A GEARBOX WHEN YOU'VE GOT AN SV! - Just stick it in top use that torque! IL4's eat your heart out!
Mr Toad & Raf esp. plus all for following me home.

Big sorry to everyone on my last session for putting you under a red flag and especially Samnooska and anyone else immediately behind me when I went down. Glad you held it together.

Well I've been watching Days of Thunder while I write this, so now I know how I should have been doing it - here's to the next time.

No regrets, well maybe I wish I'd gotten Moto sliders or Motovation on beforehand. #-o

Thanks all for a great day.

Sorry to hear about your off.

Sounds like you got a bit competitive. :?

Hopefully you'll get the bike fixed up soon for the Guildford meet this Thursday. Abyss can give you pointers on how to fix your gear lever. I can take the lever off for you when you fix it (new one or drilled bolt fix).

Unlucky fella hope all sorted swiftly.

So what were you doing so badly in the early sessions?

Pushing it against a seasoned campaigner like Rictus? tut, tut!

Sounds like you left that braking so late that you were still hard on the brakes and leaning,am I right?
All part of the learning curve fella.

Glad you're in one piece - it's not fun being in several

Next time, let Rictus past - you know it makes sense

That would help thanks.
Tried to do my brake lever before and couldn't, had to get the dealer to do it.

Thanks.
Just not being smooth, getting freaked out by people passing me (not that I didn't want them to pass me in the morning - that came later!) Being all tense and mostly for losing traction at the back end both brakes and down changes.

I honestly don't think I had started to turn in, I believe I was totally upright until I was horizontal  But you'll need to ask the queue of traffic I was holding up behind me for their opinion.
Cheers.

PM or call me to sort something out.

Can't help with the actual drilling though if you're going down that route of fixing.

Stu...Looks like you were thinking the worst when lying there waiting for the marshall? You had yourself in perfect position for being slipped in to a coffin! :P

Ah Stu. Sorry to hear about this mate. I know you had backed it in Rossi style at our last pub meeting but didn't think you would try to brake right upto the apex like him too!

Glad you are not seriously injured mate. If there is anything I can do to help let me know, if I can help I will.

Bugger. You need to add "ntman" to your name. Sorry to hear you went down Stu - good on you for pushing your limits and/but glad you (and the others) are ok. Sounds like a great big learning curve you can now call expereince.

I told you to be careful!!!

Really sorry to hear about this. Sounds pretty much like my first track day, but I bottled out of the last session, thinking I'd pushed my luck far enough.

I bet you're aching like anything today but so long as you're basically OK is all that matters. Bike will get fixed through the magic of .org!

Take all the pills and sympathy on offer. GWS

Thanks, I'm not too bad.
Just as well I didn't take up your offer of a test ride!
Wish I had your sense to not do last session, but as I said that's me, had to happen sooner or later, got away with it OK, and hopefully will learn from it.
(locked up the front on the way home again - but that was because I was so confused trying to ride a bike stuck in top gear with the throttle stuck on. Better when you learn how to)

Good to hear that you got back in one piece and are going to get the bike back on the road.

I must admit it did put the wind up me when the session got red flagged, as I went past you were in your corpse pose, arms sticking up in the air and no movement. No worries about the session being finished, I think most of us were worn out anyway. Hope the body fixes soon.

Just back from seeing off the Guildford rideout and the hospital.
They examined my foot but didn't X-ray it - shame as I could have quickly put my helmet in the way instead to check that
So they say it's not broken just ligament damage i.e. spraained ankle.
They would not have seen me if it was an RTA, at least not as quickly (was back out in 20-30 mins) I think they would have wanted to claim off my insurance. So if you can say it was on your private test track I would in future.

Tim and all sorry about Red flag, I thought they started you again, but was that the next group?

Thanks Jonboy, yes hopefully.

Last session blues... I decided not to tempt fate last time and went home early :) Sounds like it could have been worse though, glad to hear you're relatively unscathed- and just as well you didn't fit that can ;) Now. CRASH BUNGS!

Don't worry about the red flag, as someone said we were all knackered anyway.

As for the last session choice of sitting it out or not, as i said it's a choice. i had no worries about doing the last session, it's all about knowing your limmits and i know i was miles from mine as i had been all day. It's a trackday not a race, you're there to get to learn how your bike works and what it can do, but more to the point you're there for you, to learn how to ride your bike.

I'm glad you're ok, the bike is fixable, (how about getting new tyres ay???)

Sorry to hear about the off Stu. D220's are not good track tyres (I found this out the hard way too  , 'cept mine lasted 1 1/2 trackdays).
