Like the title says, it'd be nice to get an idea of numbers and experience (if you'd like to comment) etc..................
............cue smutty comments if nothing else.
By the way, the forecast (from a certain radio gardening show) looks like being dry.

I'll be there but maybe on the anti-social lout of a bike that's called a SV Thou with race pipes. Hear it before you see it   But I'll need to get the old man to fit a new rear tyre on it first. The current rear tyres totally shot......

OK Folks..........This just keeps getting better- Read on.
I decided to go on the "if you don't ask, you don't get" principle and sent the following eMail to the Dumfries & Galloway tourism people last night (Sunday) to forward for me. I then found the council website and sent it direct myself.....
Hello.
I wondered if you could be so kind to pass my comments onto the best people to action the following comments, perhaps the council roads department or "Amey" highways perhaps. Anyway, I'm sure you will know better than an outsider such as myself.
A group of Scottish motorcyclists are planning to do a days tour throughout the borders on Sunday 13th August which will include the A708 from Moffat to Selkirk. I notice, from your front page that it is reputed to be "the best in Britain". A few of us made the journey along the road a week ago and raised some concerns that in some areas, loose chippings on bitumen had been applied (perhaps a reasonable time ago) and had quite worrying quantites of gravel littering the surface in some bends. Perhaps you appreciate that whilst in a car or 4x4 vehicle, such conditions pose little real danger other than windscreen damage, a motorcycle losing grip on a loose surface whilst turning however, is quite likely to encounter noticeable difficulty. Nobody wishes to think of a days tour in such a beautiful area being ruined by a friend having an accident.
We are all responsible adults who wish to enjoy a leisurely outing punctuated by a tea & cake etc and watch out for each other constantly, but perhaps the chances of an unfortunate accident could be lessened by a road sweeper or similar removing loose gravel a day or so before. I do of course realise that this may not be possible, but like most motorcyclists, I fail to understand how such "loose chip" surfaces can be considered safe to all road users until the vast majority of material is either embeded or swept away.
Respectfully yours,
Mr INDEPENDENTPHOTO (changed!)
Upon returning from work today (Monday), I had this one in my Inbox.......
Dear Mr INDEPENDENTPHOTO (changed!)
Thank you for your e-mail regarding the proposed motorcycle tour on the 13 August 2006 taking in the above route. Our surface dressing operations on some of our roads are fairly recently completed and some sections may still require some additional sweeping . I will endeavour to have these sections swept prior to the event and I trust that you will all enjoy your whistlestop trip through the region.

I'd like to go for my first ride out with ya all on Sunday but I'm still running bike in and still getting to know my way round the roads here in Scotland, not to mention out of practice!!!!   Would it be too much to ask to tag along also?.. Go for it. 8) 8) 8)
How many miles you done so far? I think it will be about 150 round trip for the rideout.
Dont go over 1000 miles before the 1st service or your lose your warranty. You'll need to keep about 60 miles in reserve to take your bike back to cupar for your service.

Don't worry about that - it's exactly the position that I was in a year ago. Everyone took great interest in my line of thin red tape over the tacho to remind me not to over rev.
You'll be fine with us lot - we'll look after you. Carelesschucca might watch your rear though as opposed to your bike - just ask Beaniebike!

When i came on my first SV Ecosse ride I'd literally done 150 miles on the SV (about 10000 in the year before on teh 125, but that didn't really count) and did 300 that day :) You'd be more than welcome. But seriously, ride at your own pace. Get the route down before and carry a map so that at worst you can make your own way, there's nothing more dangerous than someone trying to keep up on a rideout. I should know. It's common sense, but all too easy to lose it on a rideout.
I guarantee you, every single person on the ride would rather wait for a fellow forum member, than help pick your bike up :)
Cheers everyone.. I'm really lookin forward to it, and yeh don't worry I won't do anything too stupid!.. Too chicken! Its been more than 4 years (before I left Oz)since I've owned a bike and whilst you never forget, you do get rusty! I'll definitely be studying the route and have map at hand too! :D
Done about 120 mile so far and booked in for service 1 Sep.. Not sure if too early or not!!
I hope to be making it too, assuming I can get a replacement part in time.
I'll be in teh n00ber group :smt116

My first ride out was the day after I collected the bike with a grand total of about 20 miles under my belt and I managed to keep up easily.

Wise words from the Northster - even with people telling me that, on the last ride out I still tried to keep up with the scary fast boys at the start. I knew I was being silly though so eventually backed off and waited for the group behind me.
RIght you lot, weathers ok and forecast ain't bad either - no excuses.
This could be my only and only organised rideout!!
We're up and outta here as soon as.

I have a witness for my hangover. Met sheila in Kinross yesterday who can vouch for me being pished. Kinross show is mandatory in my neck of the woods and after a whole day on the lash, I was in no state to walk let alone ride.

Thanks to all for the good company today. The weather treated us well and the roads were good. Somehow I don't think the council managed to get a sweeper along the 708 before us, but never mind.
Nice to see Dave throwing that big Marauder around too, even if he did throw it into my rear tyre at the junction at Biggar  . Thanks for helping me back up again though..... you too Goof :drink:

Unfortunate about matts' "off" but on the plus he was able to ride home, could have been much worse. "Any landing you walk away from is a good landing" Hope your arm etc is ok after a couple of days rest.
Garry, if you had longer legs you wouldnt have needed goofs help to get your bike back up
Sheila, glad you enjoyed it, hope to see you again, by then your bike might actually have some dirt on it :P

Christ, it sounds like the Wacky Races! Wish I'd been there and thinking about it now throwing a sicky in my first week would have set a nice low standard for me to live up to...
I'm planning on making up for it by joining the Essex Lounge for at least one of their weekend days. Who's up for that? And are we having our own rideout in September?
By the way Matty, my wife waited 2 weeks before she went to the doctor after a fall. Big mistake. Huge. Your broken arm will be busy fixing itself, but it might not do a very good job... The reason you feel better is because you are rock hard, like all bikers, but a little medical attention goes a long way mate. And get some phone pics of the nurses.
