From the BBC:

More than 20 motorists in Hampshire have fallen victim to a mystery vigilante who appears to target drivers spotted using mobile phones.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/hampshire/4791439.stm

Though one person targetted claims not to even own a mobile.

Wonder if it's a biker who's fed up of idiots who drive whilst on the phone.

Maybe if the police did something to enforce hands free?

Lissa

Bringing in the law requiring hands free was a farce. We spot at least a dozen drivers using a mobile every time we go out on the bike. People are doing it with impunity because camera's don't catch them in the act, do they?

And the problem with traffic cars is that they are not exactly inconspicuous are they! It can be hard work finding them when you can be seen from outer space

I have to admit that it peez me off when motorists are oblivious to their surroundings due to being on the phone. Recently what I have done is sat along side in traffic revving quite a bit. They, for some reason, get a bit miffed at not being able to hear their phone too well. Thats with a standard can on, looking forward to the looks on their faces when I gat a decent can.

Top man (or women). why don't the police leave this hero alone and go and do something useful? after all its probably more dangerous than speeding but doesn't collect as much revenue.

Because from the sounds of it he's no "hero", just a nutcase attacking people's cars and using the phones as an excuse. Same sort of person that goes out and attacks a paediatrician... By and large, scratch a vigilante and you find a loon under the paint.

There's no excuse for damaging their cars. The note should be enough.

I'm sure you would have the same opinion if £170 of damage was caused to your car.

this was on our local news, there have been tyres slashed and screws put down outside people's garages too if i remember right. (was only half paying attention)

bit of paper fine, vandalism not fine.

Isnt that just the same as 3 fines? Offenders have surely done it more than 3 times.

I notice only one of them denied it.

Consider themselves caught.

who do they have to answer to then? do they have to admit/deny it to anybody?

the fact that one doesn't have a phone is proof that there's a slight flaw in the plan!

We dont know that for certain though. Maybe it was a friends phone. Maybe the vigilante is just playing the odds due to how prevalent the offence is.

Who cares. Maybe the next vigilante will be better at the job as the police obviously arent. I've seen them drive past people driving whilst speaking on the phone.

I prefer people with headsets. Some of them make me laugh out loud.

Who cares? I care. you should care, if somebody slashed your tyres thinking you'd been on the phone whilst driving and you hadn't, you'd say "fair play, the odds were against me this time...."

Never happen. I only ride the bike and its difficult to break that particular law. Odds would truely be against me.

I need some new tyres anyway.

The one I liked was where someone had stolen a Camden Council wheel clamped and used it on a parking wardens van which was on double yellow lines

How would you feel if someone slashed your bike tyres and left a note to say 'You have been seen speeding' or 'You were seen undertaking'

I think sometimes we bikers (including myself) are guilty of adopting a 'holier than thou' attitude.

Me either, except maybe a few hand signals that you wouldn't find in the Highway Code (my other half is worse for that when she's pillion, but then, some car drivers need to be woken up/interrupted in their conversation imo).

As was previously said, fair play about the note, but it should of been left at a note. No need to go slashing tyres. He thinks about doing that on my Ford Galaxy & he'd better not get caught. That sodding thing costs me £160/corner for continentals!

The clamping of illegally parked traffic wardens was brilliant. Pulling a knife and slashing someones tyres is demented. What would happen if someone caught the tyre slasher in the act - a fatal stabbing? Sounds like a mental case to me - shame some people think its acceptable.

If only the police could enforce the law more often - anyone talking on a mobile should be pulled and fined and have 3 points on the license.

Can imagine following someone and giving them a piece of my mind there and then but it's a bit creepy if someone is following people home then sneaking back after dark to slash their tyres. Wonder if they have access to DVLA database?

Police take action on both of those. Not once have i seen a person pulled for using their phone, yet i've loads for speeding.

I would have thought a nice sticker would have been enought... maybe on the back of the car...

"this moron drives while on there mobile".... They would have missed it (who looks at the back of there car everyday) and just drove about... but would have warned everyone else.

An opportunity missed in my view. Why not simply take a picture which captures the person in the act? Ensuring that the number of the car is also shown in the shot. Date the picture and email it to the Old Bill? :-k

Sounds more than sensible Peter, hence it would never work in this country. The laws about evidence are so strict (to safeguard against innocents getting stiched up i guess) that you'd have to have an "approved" camera etc etc etc.

Having said that, clearly you dont need any evidence if you want to shoot someone in the head 8 or 10 times. Clearly doing that without any hard evidence is only a health and safety offence in this country

Someone should buy www.iphonefrommycar.co.uk and ask people to send in pictures of idiots on the phone, requesting that they are from the front with registration and face clearly visible. And then someone should buy www.isnapfrommycar.co.uk so we can shame people taking pictures of people on the phone from their car, and then someone should...

I was thinking about having something made but couldn't come up with something short enough that conveyed the message. Yours sounds great.

How about a group purchase?

Or how about "im on da fone you muron" ?

Just been leafing through that site, its quality! Might have to get me that window sticker, as middle lane morons **** me off more than anything.

From the Middle lane Morons site.... "Overtaking on the left is not an offence in the United Kingdom. However, all drivers are bound by our road traffic laws, and liable to prosecution for offences such as careless or dangerous driving. Enforcement of the law is, of course, a matter for the police who will make their decisions on whether to prosecute in the circumstances of each individual case."

yet i'm sure a copper would happily pull you for this in most cases and probably a damn site more often than pulling muppets on phones too. Ive even had cops tell me its illegal to undertake on a 2 lane dual carriageway.
