Just a quick question.

Bike is due an MOT next month and the Speedo is not working on it.
My question is, will it fail on that?

Cheers,

Martin

Yes. If you cant fix it by then, get a small cycle speedo and stick it on the dash and set it up, as a temp fix.

I'm not sure if having a working speedo is a requirement. Certainly, not having a speedo at all is permissible. Anyhow, how are they going to tell if it's wkring or not? They don't road test them - the vehicle may be dangerous, after all.

Agreed, watched my MOT - no road test so they won't know. Get it fixed at your convenience.

It is not a requirement of the MOT as far as I can tell, but I'd be looking to fix it regardless of the MOT simply because it's not all that smart to be riding without one. It is also illigal not to have one so you could pass the MOT and then be booked by the poice as you left IIRC:

Speedo on the Corsa stopped working year ago. Pain the ass to sort it out..

Another thing on the "to do" list...

It passed a few MOT's with no issues.

Not having one is a failiure, it not working is illegal, but not an MOT faliure

Again it comes down to the rules for MOT and police rules, which differ.

MOTORCYCLE SPEEDO
Does my motorcycle require a speedometer for an MOT?
If not what milage would the Tester put down on the VT20
or VT12? Phil
You will be pleased to hear that the speedometer is not checked in the MOT. The Tester would simply note that the motorcycle has no speedometer. -MOTT

FAULTY SPEEDO
The speedo on my 1994 Alfa 33 16 v 1.7 Sportwagon fails intermittently. Is a faulty speedometer an automatic MOT failure -

Even tough they dont need to test if its working or not, they will tell you that its not working as they will do a front/rear brake force test on a roller and will notice that the speedo does not work.

It may be that the magnetic sensor thingy in the front wheel hub has disintegrated. take the front wheel off and have a look. Its like a spacer with four lugs on it. sometimes they get brittle with age and crumble then the speedo stops working. The genuine suzuki part is only about £12 and a doddle to fit.
worth a look.
You dont have to have a speedo for an MOT, but I if you do have one, it must work.

It will pass. Say nothing then get it fixed A.S.A.P

How would they know if they do pull you ova then you are going to be stationary so the Speedo is gona read 0 any way!!!! Plus one bonus to this your mileage is prob not going up all the time its not working!!!!! I know off some1 who did this on there car, has passed an MOT now without a Speedo that works and has done he thinks about 7K miles without it showing on the clock, GREAT!!!!! But still I wouldn't recommend doing it still a bit on the dodgy side, E.G ware speed traps are concerned!!!!!

I rode a Honda bros with a broken speedo for a month while trying to get the part in. I would strongly recomend against it for the following reasons:

1) Your riding is likley to be a lot quicker than you think it is, I was quite supprised how fast I was going when I had the new cable fitted (Not good!)
2) You slow down excessivly for speed traps as you're not 100% sure what speed you're doing.
3) The above may lead to you being pulled over and the initial "Do you know how fast you were going sir?" question may be tricky to answer.

Which would be fraud, could invalidate insurance if policy is based on milage.

Remind me to not buy a used SV off you anytime soon.

Its not big, or clever, just illegal - oh and by the way, its spelled "over".

official line is one has to be present for the MOT for means of checking mileage.

It is not tested to see if its working though.

For use on the road the bike does need to legally have one working.

There is no requirement as part of the mot for the speedo to be working.

As there is no road test, they wouldn't be able to test it.

However, in the eyes of the law, you must have a fully functioning speedometer, so don't worry bout it failing the mot but get it fixed asap.
