as the title says. i've noticed you can get some cool gifts for having your student account with someone.....is there anything to stop me opening an account with each company (apart from the fact i havent enough money!)

and let me know what gifts you can get. so far i can see

Natwest: Free webcam and headset. free railcard
HSBC: free MP4 player OR 10 CD's
Lloyds: I-pod shuffle if you deposit £500 or more by a certain date.
RBS: £55 given to you (£100 if you are in scotland)
Co-Op: tree planted in your name by the Woodland Trust. £40 amazon.co.uk voucher
Halifax: nothing (but you can get one big ass overdraft!)
Bank of scotland: same as halifax
Abbey: nothing
Barclays: nothing
nationwide: nothing

found any more?

Good thinking, but I expect the goodies are all conditional on you paying your student loan into them.....

They are, but it can still be done, you might just have to wait a term between each account opening.
You might be able to manage a few before the first loan cheque is handed out, though.

IIRC you're only allowed one student account - at least that's the way it worked when I started uni...

For what it's worth, the railcard that Natwest are offering is probably the best freebie, if it's the same as the one HSBC used to give away. I saved an absolute packet on train fares whil I had mine - and that means more weekends away visiting mates at other uni's, and more beer money to spend while you're there!!!

i am...or will be come september. I may have to go in and check with them, though i guss you'll be correct and the loans have to go into that account!

hmmm...having said that i should be getting...

1 maintenance loan
1 maintenance grant
1 grant from the General Social Care Council
1 small grant from the university itself.

maybe i could play it! there are some bonuses to coming from a poor background!!

Or the alternative, pay them into one account, once cleared arrange to transfer them into a new account and so on.

Though why you want the hassle of more than one bank account is beyond me [trust me bank accounts can be hassle more than the freebies offered make up for  :P ]. I have two and I have to remember each month to transfer money into my other one. All because I cant close the Natwest one because my loan goes out from that - and they will not take a direct debit from my other account.

I only want it for the freebies. as for hassle. in my job i just finnished i had to deal with the morons these companies employ as branch staff on a daily basis. so yeah i know it'll be hassle. Ideally i will just pay into one. But if it is a condition of the account then i have to abide. Just wanna make my money do the most for me really.

Oooo a bit of academic snobbery, don't you just love it

Glad I've got the majority of my studies done.. the thought of being an undergrad with these crazy fees, would make me think twice about doing a degree for sure.

Which reminds me, I still need to pay off my student loan :( good job it's only 3K.
Damn, I also need to pay continuation fees this year too :(

WOW you're super lucky with all those grants...

All the best with the studies, and don't become a perpetual student like me...
