Hey SV650.org!

Just thought I'd say 'hi'. This is my first post, just registered. I hop on my first SV650 on 21st Sept. That is providing I pass my test on that very same day of course!

Bike history? Short, small and questionable. First bike just over a year ago - Gilera DNA125. Bad credibility, but good fun! Gave me my first taste of peg-down action and... infected me with the bike bug...!
Changed that thing quite soon when I realised the benefits of a gearbox! I'm now drawing my learning to a close on a Suzuki VanVan 125. A glorious machine! Funky as you like, ultra-comfy, dead slow! This really is a cracking bike, a really good ride. It attacts an amazing amount of attention, but, it must make way for something that can see the other side of 60mph... Cue my new (used!) SV650.

Looking forward to Sept 21st now. Wish me luck for my test!

Cheers...

tricky - RE learning. Yup! I hear that. Still, it will be nice to get the 'L's off!

Kylie - It's 2003. The previous owner did a few bits - Scottoiler, Scorpion exhaust, hugger. Seems well looked after though, low mileage but not too low! I sure will post some piccies!

Cheers for the warm welcome peeps!

Not with me - the DNAs are good fun. Shame they killed off the 180cc 2-smoke :(

Wow! What a warm welcome! You are a friendly bunch. Much nicer than those learner-hating bullies over at bikechatforums...

Thanks for the good luck wishes everyone. It's three weeks and counting 'till I get on my SV now. Boy, time is going slow. Almost as slow as my trusty VanVan... I'm getting right into test mode. Always checking the indies, my neck is sore from all the lifesavers, hendon shuffles at every stop!

Has anyone got any suggestions for making the next three weeks pass either more quickly, or without me thinking about my new bike?!

If you're buying from a stealership, ask them to deliver it to your house. They'll appreciate the free space. Then you can take it for a spin.

Wait, no, honestly, don't. Seriously, put the phone down!

So, here I go then. As I type I'm just about to get donned up for the first of three days Direct Access. All being well I'll be on my new (..used..) SV650S by Thursday afternoon. :D

Direct Access. The final frontier. As I boldly go where loads of you have no doubt been before, think of me pottering around Exeter atop an ER5, draped in high-viz, shuffling and lifesaving my way to my first SV! These three days'll be loads of fun I'm sure.

I'm off, best foot forward! (But left foot down, back brake on! )

philh - yea, they are a good bunch here. I havnt been slated yet for having a speefight (although i hope to be buying someones shiny yellow SV soon :D ), which is something that happenes to me alot on the MCN forums (its a crap paper, crap website, crap everything).

How's your preparation coming for your test? I failed my first test 20 seconds before i got back to the test center - put an indicator on incorrectly which forced a car in the next lane to slow dramaticly. D'oh! Passed second time though! Please remember to cancel your signals! Remember - the examiner cant hear you if your talking under your helmet, it might help to commentate as you go along (nerves can get the better of all of us!)

Dude

Welcome, I'm also new to the site - and can say its a great place! Loads of people willing and able to help and advise! 8)

Good luck with the test, I think the lifesavers, and cancelling indies are the best tips. :!:

Hope all goes well for you.

Ps I'd be interested to know what you're paying for insurance on the SV including credentials ie age, ncd, etc..

I nodded to a DAS bloke on a ER5 this morning, he looked so surprised... and then I got a fixed glare from the instructor

LOL Ed, I did similar the other day, 2 guys on ER5's doing DAS, followed by the instructor on an orange z1000. That was the guy that I used for DAS, nodded at first guy but didn't want to be a nodding dog, so did a long nod to cover both learners, but they didn't respond - more like rabbits caught in headlights.

Instructor gave a friendly wave & I gave him a seperate nod & had a little chuckle about how petrified the learners looked.

Cheers for the good wishes everyone!

Phew! That was hot! Its a lovely day here today but that isnt so great when your stuck in full clobber all day. Also my right ear is now hanging somewhere under my chin after the intercom earpiece ripped it off during lid removal... :?

Not ER5's. CB500's. There OK. A bit lumpy. (Said the learner... ) All went well. Things for me to improve on specifically are road positioning and bloody lifesavers! I'm doing the lifesavers OK, just too damn late, then not leaving enough thinking time for the actual maneuver. Easy to fix I hope.

I also need to get closer to the kerb/hedge when taking lefts. Trouble is, the correct metre-ish kerb distance is asking for a thwacking from the brambles that are at full size this time of year! Small price...

Right, I'm bloody starving now and I need a cuppa tea. Dual carriageways tomorrow. So Guv, when do we cover wheelies/stoppies...?

Cheers y'all...!

Baph

Sounds like it's all going well. I reckon everyone gets a hard time about lifesavers, because, well, one day, it'll save your life!

CB5's aren't generally bad machines, a lot of couriers use them, but yours is probably a bit lumpy because it's used as a learner bike, the ER5 I used was a lot worse for wear than my brand new SV!

Stoppies are now officially covered under the "emergency stop" procedure. Practice with your instructor, then just don't lift the back wheel with the examiner & you'll fly through the test

Wheelies, well, extra bonus points under test conditions are available for turning (left or right) coming out of a T-juntion on only the back wheel. This is because the examiner recognises the fact that you're only doing it to save wear on the front wheel.

Geez I'm bored at the moment :(

Serious note, good luck come test day!

Good luck for Thursday - think - indicator - lifesave - indicator - lifesaver

If you have trouble sleeping you could use that instead of counting sheep

... Yep. I'd like to reassure you all that I do have both a strong sense of self-preservation and an acute awarenes of just how different this bike is from what I am used to.

I'll be taking the coming weeks, many of them, with the most leisurely of approaches. Niether my Wife or Daughter would thank me for wrapping myself around something hard and immovable, plus I dont want to scratch my new bike!

I've no desire to add to the statistics. I think it speaks volumes of this forum that your first responses to a newly qualified rider are to 'take it easy'. I've read the 'Fallen Friends' bit with deep sympathy and I've no intention of contributing.

Cheers y'all.

Welcome to the new found freedom you now have :)

As has been said, ride carefully! You'll soon gain confidence on the bike & it'll be time to attack those chicken strips & get your knees down. But those come in good time, and you learn where you can do it and where you can't.

I still haven't got my knee down yet, but that's now more due to a lack of knee sliders than anything else. I think a few times I've almost had sparking footpegs

Good to see a sensible head on your shoulders, and keep thinking of the Mrs & kid whilst you're on the bike. Guranteed to make you ride safe. Well, maybe you should be thinking about the cars too, but you get the point.

Keep it right way up
