View Full Version : Illegal -> Legal Exhaust Question

I've put on a full Renegade exhaust system (baffle~less) from standard - however I want to do the I.A.M. (Institute of Advanced Motorists) bike test.
The peeps there have advised me that however nice it sounds and looks, and they will go out doing assessments with it as it is - I will have to put a legal exhaust on for the test itself.

I don't want the hastle of taking off the full system, however I'm hoping to just replace the current sports cans with cheap, legal baffled cans. (Even second hand - any offers?).
It would also be handy for when I will have to get it MOTed in 2+ years.

Would this solve the problem as I'm hoping, or with it having twin exhausts instead of one, would it still not pass regulations? Or just have to get a certain type of can?

Any thoughts ?

I find it strange that they will take you out on assessed rides with the race can but will not allow it for the test!!!!!!!!

It doesn't have to have any kind of special mark to be legal, it just has to have no mark that says 'not for road use' or 'race use only' etc.

To pass the MOT it also has to emit noise levels 'similar to the original system' (in the testers opinion). This is why some places will pass a noisy one if they're friendly with you and not if they're sticklers.

The IAM may have it's own regs eh .....

You'll be out with a police rider on the test, rather than an IAM member. Technically they could fail you on it, but I'm not sure it would be an automatic fail. There's leeway with the IAM, police riders and any other human being out there.

That said, I wouldn't turn up with a loud can, small plate, tinted visor, etc. for the IAM test; the police rider will spot it instantly and make a mental note, before the proper test even starts.

Mine was a former police officer. I think the point is that they expect a legal bike. You can take it all off again the minute you pass. Bit like the MoT :lol:

Unless it specifically says "not for road use", or "Race use only". I.E. Does not say anything that excludes it for use on the road, it will pass its MOT.

The MOT simply requires a subjective assessment that the bike is no louder than an equivilent. Therefore take two bikes with after market cans neither is significantly louder than the other and therefore both pass.

The requirement for an "E" mark was abandoned some time ago.

However, the C&U regs are out of alignment with the VOSA requirement for the MOT. So you could still get a rectification notice from Mr Plod, but the MOT inspector will say it complies with his book and stamp the notice.

There's leeway with the IAM, police riders and any other human being out there. Not quite enough leway for my cans unfortunately... I know that for certain.

Ask renegade to send you some baffles.Minor problem with that... one of the cans was standard and can have a baffle put in... the other was built without and can't have one fitted unless I start drilling holes for it to fix into :P
