I need to repair the front cylinder on my 650s, and need to know if the cylinder head is cast aluminium or steel?

The reason is one of the exhaust bolts sheared and I have been unsuccesful with stud extractors, mole grips and anything else to remove. As a temp repair, I used a drilled into the old bolt shank and used chemical metal to hold a length of thread bar then fitted the exhaust. The chemical has disintegrated over 2/3 months and I need somehting more permanent. I can't afford to have the head removed and repaired so I am planning to weld the thread bar in place.

I have tried a magnet on the head, but get a weak pull compare dto say the tank or rear subframe.

Any help or other suggestions gratefully received!!!

I reckon so. Not heavy enough to be all steel, anyways... The magnet pull might be from something in the alloy, or it could even be teh internals if your magnet#s strong enough.

The magnets are prolly being attracted to the cylinder liners.

What happens when you use the stud extractors?
