RIP.
I was never a huge fan, but I respected him cos he was famous for a genuine reason and had an obvious passion for what he was doing - a rarity among 'celebrities' these days. Sad news indeed.
I still sit down with the kids to watch him as he was engaging and entertainingly OTT. Have always admired him for the work he did with animals and his promotion of his country. He was and will remain a true Aussie icon.

The guy had guts. No way could I have ever done any of his snake/croc stuff.
And just goes to show just how dangerous a stingray can be.
RIP
strewth
really like the guy, for his enthusiasm and balls out no fear attitude
sounds like a bizarre freakish accident too. not normally a lethal creature but straight to the heart isn't going to be in anybody's favour
Wow, such a great guy, RIP

I'm in shock this morning  Totally stunned ( No pun intended )
RIP Dude!
Condolences to his family.
Damn. My Mrs loved to watch his shows.
Just heard this on my way in to work .. I loved watching him and marvelling at his incredible skill at dealing with all kind of animals.
A very sad loss especially for the family he leaves behind.
RIP
A huge loss to the animal world. :(
I only watched him yesterday as well. At least others have been taught Steves skills and continue the great work he started out to do.
He also helped many animals, and made the western world aware of Crocs and other reptiles. He had a great passion for what he done.
A very tradgic loss to wildlife and conservation.

Died doing what he loved. Lucky bugger. RIP.
Died doing what he loved. Lucky bugger. RIP.
yeah, really lucky
I can only hope others take up the challenge he left them, with as much passion and enthusiasm as he had. He really cared and worked hard to help raise people's awareness of his countries often unique wildlife.
Definately a person I could respect.
RIP.

He seemed to love his work and was passionate about conservation and animal welfare. So sad he was killed - sympathies to his wife and two young children.
Loads of respect for the guy. He's pretty much the reason I decided to take the plunge & buy a snake for my fiance. She's always wanted one, but with us having kids there had to be some serious thought put into it.
My thoughts are with his friends & family.
However, this made me smile:

If anyone finds this distasteful etc, drop me a PM & I'll happily remove. I just figure that it's better to celebrate someone's life, rather than mourn their loss.

Certainly dont see it as distasteful, seems to me that Steve would find the humour in it (only going by seeing him on TV tho).
To contine in the same direction, I assume every one has seen
Boba Fett, Jedi Hunter ? http://www.atomfilms.com/sw/content/jedi_hunter
Again, anyone who has a problem with itm let me know and I will edit.

Some cool images... I ahve the up-most respect for this guy. He loved animals and put their needs above human needs, which IMO, is how it should be done. A lot of time and respect for these kind of people.

:( Always sad to lose an oddball. Unforrtunately, all I can think of is really inappropriate comments for some reason. Mainly because of South Park.

Anyone who has passion for their subject inspires me - Steve Irwin, David Attenborough, Roy Keane (I am not interested in football!), Michael Wood (historian), even some on the freaks on the Baldrick history prog, and to lose someone who is so passionate about their subject is a loss to the subject.
His TV never really had the gravity of say David Attenborough, but his passion and pleasure in what he did was a pleasure to watch. Terrible loss that it is, he died doing what he loved, so a small consolation for the family.
I see the crocadile hunter site is down - guess it's just too busy. That sums up how many people he affected.
Strangely enough I got "flopped over" (no other way of describing it really!) by a sting ray about 3 feet across when I was in Belize (shortly before the nurse shark (no real teeth) decided he was hungry and wanted to know if I had any food for him!) - it didn't occur to me that it could have been *really* dangerous.
you'd have probably been ok mr woodman. i think he was only the 2nd person since 1945 to die from a sting/attack/whatever

Sad to see the fella go. It was inevitable some beasty would get him. Though with him having a wife and two kids you'd think he might have wised up a bit.
R.I.P.
Aye sad to hear, however you have to wonder what he was actually doing with it as it so rare for this to happen and that it only happens if it feels its being attacked.

Sad to hear, I was really shocked, always watch this on a sunday when suffering in bed.
But really strange that he went like this, rather than by a poisonous snake or croc, something like that. I think they said on the news that he was swimming above it.
RIP Steve, you BEAUTY!!!

In tribute:
Aussie: As we steer our boat down [the boys are on the sofa looking at TV], looking for these dangerous predators… Boy, there's a king croc right here. [it slips into the water] He must be four meters; 12, 13 feet long at least. [it looks up at him] This croc has enough power in its jaws to rip my head right off.
Kenny: (Oh, no!) [tightens his hood up]
Aussie: I've got to be careful. So, what I'm gonna do is sneak up on it and jam my thumb in its butthole.
Stan: Holy crap. dude!
Aussie: If I get bit out here, I'm 200 kilometers from the nearest hospital: I'd better be real careful jamming my thumb in its butthole. [jumps in and grabs the crocodile] Oh, boy, it's ****ed off now.
Kyle: Go, dude, go! [excited, the boys jump on the sofa]
Aussie: I'm gonna jam my thumb it its butthole now! This should really **** it off! [reaches down with his left thumb to do it. The croc jumps up in pain and drops] Oh, yeah, that piossed it off, all right! [the boys cheer] I've gotta be careful!
Stan: This guy rules!
Kenny: (He actually killed it!)
Cartman: I told you guys.
Aussie: [with left arm now bandaged and in a sling] Well! That was quite an angry croc! But I managed to escape with only a few bruises and a shattered left testicle. Next week we'll look for more of these beautiful creatures, so we can learn more about them by ****ing them off immensely. Thanks for watching.
Kyle: [to Stan] Dude! Let's go look for crocodiles!

Eye witnesses have claimed they heard muffled underwater cries of "Allah Allah! Allah Allah!" in the direction of the fleeing stingray, whom is now believed to be hiding in an underwater cave with Osama Bin Laden. President Bush has hinted that such underwater caves cannot be allowed to harbour terrorists and that they must be liberated by whatever means necessary to ensure the freedom of the American people is preserved. He claims the attack on Steve Irwin is an attack on Western democracy itself and has called on the UN to send a military taskforce to the region to prevent more violence. Prime Minister Blair has asked that Hans Blix be sent in to conduct a full search of the caves as British intelligence suggests Saddam Hussein's missing WMDs are being held there. Rumours have been circulating that Lord Lucan may also be holed up with the extremists, but these reports remain unconfirmed. Al Jazeera have today shown a video of the Jihadist stingray demanding the immediate withdrawal of all Western wildlife documentary makers from the area and that more blood would be shed if this was not the case. He went on to say that the exploitation of the area's shrimp supply by multi-national corporations was morally unjust and was having a detrimental effect on the fish population in the area. He claimed if these corporations did not cease their activities immediately, violence would erupt in aquariums right across Australia resulting in serious loss of Australian life.
Looks like it's all kicking off, folks
Interviewer: Steve - whats your fave animal.
Steve: G'day mate - you know how much i love crocodiles, but i'll always have room in my heart for a sting ray.
  <hangs> :smt095
