View Full Version : Been invited to a wedding reception...

All a bit complicated this :) My ex, who if I'm honest I'd prefer wasn't my ex, but that's a logn story  is getting married in a fortnight, and I've been invited to the reception. For various reasons, I've accepted the invite... But what to wear?

I've been to a few before, but not for friends my own age, and usually I've been at the wedding too so I've been kilted up. But I hate the bonnie prince charlie getup, it's so cheesy- don't mind the kilt in general but the whole shortbread tin nonsense annoys me, and I can't be bothered with it for the evening do- especially since we're going out after. But, I kind of want to cut a dash ;)

I don't know the rules though. She wants things pretty formal... I could just wear a suit. Need to get a new one, my old one's rotten. But I was wondering... Think I can get away with the kilt (a dark tartan, mind) and sporran, smart boots, heavy white or black shirt? I think it's pretty sharp, and I can carry it off pretty well (I have good physio'd knees :) ), but I'm not sure it'd be considered formal enough and I don't want to **** anyone off

No good at this sort of thing... Give me jeans and a t-shirt. Or leathers :)

I should imagine suit would be fine but you may be a bit out of place if everyone else is going to be kilted up!

smart boots

All sounds fine to me, an asset at any wedding. But get a high polish on your DM's. And new laces. If you get a mirror finish on your boots, people will be able to see up your kilt :P . Mind you, I suppose it works both ways...

Go on you bike, then you have the perfect excuse to wear leathers.Anything to save having to buy a new suit and spend hard earned dosh on something you don't want.
For the same reason,if that is just not on,wear the kilt which is already in your wardrobe.Who could possibly object to a kilt in Scotland?

Don't go!!!!

If you wish she wan't your ex. i.e. still your ball n'chain, then seeing her get married is not going to be the best thing to do. You'll just end up getting drunk, making an ar&e of yourself, then you'll find yourself walknig round hte hotel at 3am with just your pants on because you've slept walked. You may then spend time in a cupboard or next to a hand dryer for warmth until a) You remember your room number & b) the concierge gets back from his extemded cigarette break.

Trust me on this

I usually wear a black kilt for this kind of thing. It looks smart and has a devastating effect on the ladies. Depending on the formality of the function I'll wear a fairly formal shirt (purple or black) or a more relaxed goth shirt, with shoes or boots as appropriate.

My kilt was made to measure by a kiltmaker on the Royal Mile, but you can get cheap ones off ebay that look almost as good.

Nah, it'll be alright. Ancient history... For one thing, I'm mainly going so I can hit on one of the bridesmaids ;) It'll be entirely a happy coincidence if her mum and dad think "That Andrew's looking fine, nice lad, wish she was marrying him not that half man/half pig..."

Thought about a black kilt, I was more or less settled on a really, really dark one but it's still in the running... We're all off to a metal club after, I can rock the Jonathon Davis look :)

My Glaswegian mate, Alan, who hates it when people wear kilts. In his own words "Faein' attention-seeking tarts. Probably nae e'en proper faein' Scottish, likes, y'ken?"

It's up to you if you wear it, but most people I know (down South at least) think it's a bit gimmicky and not really formal enough for weddings, etc. I've even had someone (perhaps insensitively) call it, "Fancy dress for Jocks." :!:

NB (before I get flamed): The above is what my friends think. My stepbrother is half-Scottish and if he wanted to wear a kilt, I'd not take the Michael. :)

Aye, I can see that. But this one's in Edinburgh :) Half the guys'll be in the kilt. I prefer it to suits, I always feel like I'm going to the school photo... Don't like the fancy dress aspect, though. The shoelaces! What were they thinking?

From what I understand, the fancy dress (shortbread tin - good one) was a Victorian invention; a romanticised vision of the Scot. Ok, footwear: why not do a medieval Scot and go in bare feet - dirty toenails too, or as a concession, a pair of dead furry animals. Beavers would be good.

I think you've got two choices.

Firstly wear the whole formal Prince Charlie outfit. I agree it's a bit cheesey, but it's always going to be appropriate for the occassion. If you want to make it a bit more classy make sure you wear a good formal shirt and a real bow tie (not one of those horrible clip on thingies). If you're out and about in toon afterwards then I guarantee you'll have cracking night. Remember Edinburgh is one of the Hen Night hot spots and there's noting the ladieeeeees like more than a man in a kilt. You'll certainly have no problem getting in anywhere.

The other option is to go for the plain single breasted black suit, pseudo rat pack look. It's just understated and comfortable. You may need to get your hair trimmed mind if you want the full Dean Martin look!

Kilts and boots at a wedding... a big no no!

Thats what I usually wear for non-formal kilt-wearing occasions - actually thinking about it, if I remember rightly I got out of the Prince Charlie rig and into that set up at MY wedding after the meal (actually I think it was a green shirt and the normal kilt boots - I cant remember HALF of that day, and its nothing to do with us all getting back to the hotel from the pub and me ending up in a room with 2 girls, a bottle of wine and a plate of Cheese sandwiches.........)

A mate just offered to lend me his claymore. That doesn't strike me as a good idea at all :)

Hey Northy

Forget the kilt and traditional approach, I imagine that she (the ex) has seen it all before. :) Besides if it's a Scottish wedding you'll just blend in.

Be individual, be smart and be classic. Formal evening suit with an appropriate accessory to match what the bridesmaids are wearing (i.e. lilac cumberbund/handkerchief, etc) 8) That way you'll be classically presented and with the colour complement you'll look like you put some thought into it.

And good luck with the bridesmaids.

If I knew what a cummerbund was, I'd consider it. Is it some sort of very large bird?

The cumberbund :?:

Think Cary Grant or Sean Connery as 007.

The quintessential bow tie and cumberbund.

So, I've rented a black kilt, purchased a rather nice black lace-up shirt... Kilting it up Ninja style :) Just wee bits of contrast here and there on the sporran, belt, shirt buttons etc, under the stitching, breaks it up nicely. I was swithering about getting the Black Watch tartan instead, to be just a tad less black, but bit the bullet in the end Not often I look sharp ;) Since demands were made, I'll put up some pics next weeek when it arrives.
