View Full Version : Normal Operating Temperature
Hi Guys,
I did a quick search, couldn't find the relavent information.
I want to know what is the normal operating temperature of the SV650S.
Recently I dropped my bike on a curb and bent the radiator. The fix will cost ~$1000, $600 for the part. The bike lost a little bit of coolant when it dropped, I think it came out of the overflow. The bent is on the left side, the radiator is bent on the bottom right corner (when looking from the front) about 2-3cm bent. I was able to bent it back by hand t oabout 1-2cm bent.
The bike now runs at about 108'C on stop and go traffic and about 103'C while running. I know the over heat lights goes off at 120'C, but I was wondering what is the typical day to day running temperature that you guys see on your display?
Note, I have an 2006.
Should I bring it back to the dealer to have it fixed, if the temperature stays pretty consistent around 108'C? No leak.
p.s. I am a new bike owner, and I don't remember what my typical temperatures was like before I dropped it at 95km. :(

somewhere in the 80s or early 90s is all it should really reach when moving, even on the hottest days. At 103 you are not doing the engine any favors, get it sorted!!! you could always buy a 2nd hand rad???
I thought 120 was the proper danger area?
Mine normally sits around 80-90. Most its ever been is 104, but that was due to stupid amounts of traffic.

Mine (2003) will sit at 92 degrees constant on the motorway at 80mph.
Dont look that much when around traffic to be honest.
I would get it sorted. You dont have to buy parts new and use main dealers for that sort of thing. I wouldn't!

My sv1000 sits at around 90 on the motorway, I've had it up to 108 in town a number of times, but the fan's never come on - I'm led to believe it comes on at around 109
I smashed my rad up in April, and got it repaired by a local guy, who did quite a good job of it. New radiators for SV1000 are something like £450 ish in the UK, so it's best to go for a second hand one, or to get it repaired.
You say you lost some coolant - was the rad leaking, and did you top it up via the expansion bottle - it can be hard to see the level in the bottle - try using a torch behind it. It sounds like you're running a little hot - check the coolant levels carefully

Same with me, runs at 89 degrees on the motorway, only once had it over 100 whilst sitting in traffic in summer.
The temperature it runs at will depend on what the ambient temperature is and the type of riding you're doing. My ZX6R sits at around 106-108C on a hot day in traffic and is happier than I am. Is the fan kicking in and keeping the temperature down? You should be able to bridge the connection to the Fan and check that it is working as this is sold seperatly to the Rad. Might be worth keeping an eye out for a 2nd hand straight rad (Check what other years would fit) and fitting it yourself. Have a check and see if the Fins are bent as this will impede airflow and make the Rad far less efficient.

The max mine has been at was around 103C. 120C is apparently the temperature that you shut your engine off quickly & hope you haven't caused irreproble damage. The light will probably come on at around 115C.
Normally it runs around the 80s & 90s mark, and most of my riding is high speed (60mph etc).

Around 80 degress like most others it seems.
Fan kicks in at 104.
