View Full Version : ¡Hola! from an envious American

Sarge

Greetings!

Sarge here weighing in from the breadbasket of the US of A. I'm a cop in the States and have owned, oh, 15 or so bikes in the last 20 years of riding. I'm on my second SV. Bigger isn't always better...

Anyway, I've always been a huge fan of the UK bike scene. I'm a regular reader of BIKE magazine, the finest moto-rag in all the world. IoM is my dream race (to attend, not to participate in! - ). I'd trade the cruiser heavy US bike culture for you boys' environment any day.

Looking forward to chiming in here and there, engaging in a little bit of natter (do I have the vernacular down? - ) and sharing a few thoughts and ideas about the bikes we share a passion for.

Cheers!

Sarge

'Ello.

OK, first thing - get yourself a subscription to 'Two Wheels Only' magazine - it's much better than 'Bike'. More balanced, generally more informative and personally I find it a better all round read.

As for the vernacular - you could possibly invest in seeing three movies other than the aforementioned Mary Poppins   - namely Sean of the Dead, Dog Soldiers and Sexy Beast (if only to see 'Ghandi' swearing! ).

Mix and match from those three and a recognisable British turn of phrase is assured.

Hah, now Sarge knows how it feels to be under the jackboot of the mods ;) (He's an ex-mod from SV Rider, which is moderated pretty much exactly as well as this place is, but some of the halfwits there take offence)

d*ck Van Dyke in Mary Poppins?

OK, fine, I'll just talk like the pipe swinging Yank cop I am.

Seriously though, thanks for the hearty welcome guys, much appreciated!

'Sean of the Dead' is one of my favorite movies! Hilarious!

I've checked out TWO, but seem to like the humor of BIKE better, call me crazy.

Um I er... believe that the correct response is something like "Howdy Pard'ner, put it there..."

OK, that's the transatlantic stereotyping out of the way.

Welcome to our particular breed of madness :thumleft:

LOL @ the gang of you!

Stu, I'm a sergeant with the Omaha Police Department. We're a town of 400,000 in the city limits proper, about 3/4 mil in the metro.

I work patrol, but have worked undercover Narcotics, Special Ops, and project beat assignments in my 18 years of law enforcement.

Nice city to live, actually.

We've got some great local riding just 30 mintues from here, western Iowa's Loess Hills. Check out my blog entry for details.

http://chainstretcher.blogspot.com/2006/07/loess-hills.html

We've got a local track, Mid-America Motorplex, about 20 minutes from my house. Check out the video and look for the large man riding poorly on the silver Fazer Thou. That'd be me. ;)

I once had a friend tell me I couldn't put it in a barrel without a bottom... I think that suggests I talk alot, dunno for sure.

Welcome Sarge :)

Cheeky question for you.

Whats the legality for driving over there on a UK license?

Got a good friend in Kentucky who's father-in-law has offered me the loan of a bike next time I am over - so will my UK license cover me?

Is it a national thing, or vary state by state?

David

David, I honestly don't know what requirements you'd have to meet to be able to legally ride in Kentucky. I'd start here and see if by contacting the Department of Motor Vehicles there, you can get information about a provisional license for your visit.

http://transportation.ky.gov/drlic/non_us_ctzns.htm

Know this- if you come here and have access to a sportbike, hell, any bike, in that part of the States, you're going to want to ride it! (See my June '03 Honda Hoot blog entry for a taste.)

Good luck!

Late edit: take a look at this page about 3/4 the way down. Perhaps you're okay.

Nooooooooo!!! Don't. It's rubbish (IMHO). Just couldn't go unanswered.

Not that 'Bike' is any better.
Except for Ogri, Mal, Mitzi and Kick-Start. Just so true! :riding:

Oh BTW

Welcome.

My other half goes to Vegas each year for a bike meet and hires bikes on his UK licence with no problem. I think the only requirement is you have the motorcycle entitlement on it. :D

Welcome! Spent six weeks this summer over in the States - first vist and well impressed although why most bikers seem to be in Harleys baffled me a bit...

I had the kids (sorry, young adults) with me so didn't get to ride but am sure lynw's right - full motorbike UK licence is fine for riding over there.

The standard of driving seemed much better, generally more courtesy and once I'd got used to turning right through red lights and strange road signage the near on 4000 miles went fine.

Came back and wanted to say 'You're welcome' every time anyone said 'Thank you'...

Personally think Motorcycle Sport and Lesiure is better then Bike or T.W.O but then I'm an ol' a*se and not into sportsbikes...
