Still one of the best drivers IMHO. Is the greatest ever ? Personally no I dont think so. Fair play to him though for retiring at the top of his game. Better this than to fade away to the back of the grid and be an embarresment to himself.

Looks like Flavio Briatore certainly won't miss him - me neither. Nobody could deny his (Michael's) brilliance as a driver but I always found the likes of Senna, Roseberg, Mansell and Mika Hakkinen more exciting to watch.

Can't blame him for packing it all in when he's at the top of his game, though and it should be a good end to the season. I'm actually looking forward to the last three races and that hasn't happened for a while.

It is a shame that with such a record he will be long remembered for many of his "questionable" tactics. A problem created all by himself though and so I have no sympathy.

p.s. people suggest that young Dani in Moto GP lacks personality? Christ have they ever endured a press conference featuring Kimi? :?

2nd in the drivers championship 2 points behind Alonso. He finished 8 seconds in front of Raikonen today the rest of the field were nowhere.

I wish the cheating b*st*rd had gone years ago - perhaps then my 2nd favourite sport (motorcycling is naturally my first - even before I had bikes) wouldn't be in the pitiful state it is now.

Greatest driver ever ? My left foot !!

The only thing he's been great at is getting his own way - maybe that's OK - after all we all want to look after number one don't we ? I just get annoyed when people confuse this with great driving ability.

I realise that it's purely my own opinion & not provable in any way shape or form - but I think that if Ayrton Senna had lived, Schumacher's world titles would have numbered far fewer. Don't even get me started on what Fangio, Ascari, Moss, Clark, Hill Snr etc would have made of him - a different class of driver altogether.

Good Riddance - and I hope that Ross Brawn goes as well - an undoubtably brilliant engineer & tactitian who unfortunately was willing to sell out his integrity for titles.

Ah well, cant say im a fan of it, it always seemed to get more boring, after todays motogp race maybe more people will go over to motogp

Fizz - there are a lot of names I could have included :- Ronnie Peterson; Alain Prost; Keke Rosberg; Nelson Piquet etc, etc - NONE of them would have put up with his antics - they'd have just driven him off the circuit and /or probably just beaten the hell out him in the pits afterwards !! :D

Let's bring back the good old days, when drivers had some passion & feeling for the sport - not just for the paycheque.

I totally agree get rid of all the electronics and driver aids to and go back to when cars were driven by real men instead of boys.

Can't take it away from him, he was fast and could drive around the odd problem with the car. Problem is his racing was a dull as Pedrosas happy face.

For sheer driving ability he's questionable. Senna tops my list in ability and consistency by for entertainment Mansell wins it hands down with Jacque Villleneuve very close behind. Schumacker is lucky, how many of his 'victories' were handed to him by his own team mates? Also it 'seems' like Ferrari have the governing body on the payroll even if they do not. With the qualifying problems that led to a five place penalty for Alonso to the mass damper.

When someone dominates a sport people get a little tired and then look to see them fall instead of appreciating the talent the person has.

So what is any winner to do,even Valentino? Actually dress and act like a clown whilst they race? Get real. Schumaker dominated at times without shenanigans and so with his typical Arian withdrawn ways people saw him as dull outside of the car. But in truth what does any of that matter? Your never gonna go out for a pint with him anyway! :P

Senna would for sure of dented Michael's record, but he too was never shy of the odd dubious antic.

I don't think his racing is dull. His car control is sublime. He makes what he does look easy. What makes it dull is that when he's on it. Nobody can get near him so he totally dominates the races.

I think he shows his emotions well. He had tears on his face in the press conferance today. I remember him bursting into tears a few years back when he passed Senna's record of Race Victories. He knows his F1 history and what those numbers mean. He also got told of for celebrating to much on the podium and I remember he used to conduct during the Italian National athem until he got told off for doing it.

Peters right, Senna himself was never shy of the odd dubious moment. I think the trouble is that Senna you could see that often those dubious moments would be unplanned. Except for the year he punted prost off the track to win the championship. Which he said he was going to do before the race started. Remember the year he crashed at Monaco when in the lead.. He hid in his house and nobody heard from him for days afterwards. I think the difference is Senna had more charisma, more emotion. I think that at times Michael can be robot like. He is or appears to be more calculating that the other drivers. He's certainly ruthless behind the wheel, but thats what makes him a winner. Nice guys don't win races. Something that Jenson and DC should remember.

I'm with Fizz on this one. Senna was much more emotional about it, inside and outside of the car; he wasn't the cleanest of drivers on track, far from it, but like Fizz said, his antics resulted from direct confrontation in the heat of the race, maybe what we'd call "the red myst". Schumacher's antics are planned, almost cold-blooded; throwing Damon Hill against the wall in Australia, puntering Jacques Villeneuve, parking his car at the Rascasse in Monaco, etc,... not the same "class" antics. No doubt about his car control, though. He showed that since his F1 debuts with Jordan, and even before that in Sport Protos with Sauber Mercedes and team-mate Karl Wendlinger (btw, where's he now?...).
