I have always been very keen on the idea of building a KitCar nothing fancy or a replica of something like Vantage etc etc.

I have found a company that do a complete kit without engine for £2700 and you can put a bike engine on it for more fun.....maybe a Busa, or ZX12R or sthing among those lines bringing the total to about £4000 lets say with hikups along the build about £5000 maximum.

Now the question:

Do I sell my 2 and a half year old turbo charged Ibiza with mods for about £8500 and put the money into the kitcar and the rest save them?

The kitcar looks similar to a Caterham 7. Would you be able to use that as a full time car? Bare in mind I'm not married just with a gf and a dog:)

OR

Do I keep my car and build the kitcar as a present for my dad where I'll raid my savings and defo need more money then?

I know a few people who have kit cars bit they all treat them as weekend fun cars. I think the problem is that while they are all built to very high mechanical standards. They are not protected from the elements such as modern cars are, so you may find that the bits you cant clean on a regular basis get tatty very quickly.

I can see your point because of the fiberglass panels etc

Valid point....I'll take into account

I think you;ll have to keep your own car for day-to-day things, so how about going in it with your Dad? Build it together as a project, both have use of it, and he can stump up most of the cash, as Dad's are usually slightly better off than sons. It will bring you closer together and you gett he best of both worlds.

I've always wanted a Caterham 7 - so stick with that look. Have you googled locost for a forum and a club etc. I would sell your car if you have to get a kit car but locost is closer to £1000 so you may not have to.

Edit: £1K looks like it's incredibly unrealistic for a first build as you don't get a kit to start with it's just a process of building a car from almost scratch.

Good luck anyway!

Warthog my Dad is in Greece so if I builded the car for him it would have been a left hand drive build that I would SVA get it on the road here and then drive it to him/with him for his use. So I wouldn't get to keep it.

Stu I know about Locost and I have seen the club/forum etc. Thing is that I don't want to have to put the frame together and for £2700 for all in apart from the engine is a really good price:) Will defo save me time, mistakes = money and more than everything I prefer to have everything there for me to build:)

Can't remember the name of the company have the mag at home and will let u know. They are near Sheffield I think

yeah 1k is bit low but if you follow the instructions and you are VERY well informed you might make it.......I know though I'm not hence why I prefer the ready packaged one:)

I guess the question is 'How much do you love your Dad?'

Me - I'd make the kit car for myself.

Espescially if it was a Cat 7. I've wanted one of those since forever - in yellow and green. Which incidentally is my Dad's fault! He got me watching The Prisoner as a kid and I fell in love with the Lotus Super Seven at the beginning.

I love my dad quiet a lot:)

I would easily build it for him no questions asked......the only bit that's gonna hurt is that all my savings will dissapear

sell your car, build kit car for weekends and get a cheap run around for the daily grind and for the dog to go in back.

eh! wheres my post gone?

Anyhoo, what i said was, dont think ever of using a caterham type car as daily transport, they are a weekend/occasional car. I would sell the Ibiza, buy a cheaper car, say 2ks worth of something reliable, and build the kit car.

If it were my choice I'd go for either a Caterham 7 or a Westfield, predominantly as they have established groups who can offer help and advice, much like this place I guess. From experience of knowing people who have owned bith, they are nuch higher maintenance than a regular car and a lot more fragile. Fantastic if you have a second means of transport,

I agree...

OMG Cobra's are just the most beautiful cars 8) !!

Good choice on the Caterham 7... they're simple, and the looks don't age... I say keep the KIT car for yourself.

My dads friend has a quantum kit car, very cool, but slightly dated now

I've been using a Quantum H4 for the last 7 or 8 years... it's my only car, lives out on the drive all year (Garage is for SV! :riding: ) dirt cheap to run (all bits from Ford, £170ish f/comp insurance for a 2.0L!!).
Not really a track/weekend car, but heaps more practical than a 7-alike.

Def the above and use as 2nd car.
I'm off the the factory on Wednesday and I think I may come back with one!
Though what i'm going to do with 2 cars 2 bikes and only 1 bum who knows?

I really really wish I hadn't seen that replica cobra because my "when I buy a house with a garage I'll buy a cat-d sv and do it up" plan has just morphed in to a "get a cobra replica" and build it plan......
