View Full Version : Chain knackered after 12500 miles
and its scottoiled!!! Sprockets where worn but ok, but chain totaly stretched.
I hope the new one that i had fitted lasts a tad longer. The chain before i got 24k out of and that was the sprockets that went 1st and ate the chain.

Out of interest, how often were you adjusting it?
Out of interest, how often were you adjusting it? When it needed adjusting. Checked weekly. Over the past couple of months, its been adjuste about once a week.
In the past, on my old chain, it hardly needed adjusting. I think that it was adjusted, say 12 times in 24k. The sprockets ate that one
My front sprocket is starting to curve off the teeth, only a little but thats after about 10k since install. Its only realy needed adjusting recently. I hope mine is not starting to go.

Are you running standard sprockets?A smaller front to lower gearing can put wear on the chain, and what make was it?Popular wisdom is that the OEM(DID?)chains are best, and I have a pet theory about the rivet links on new chains.I think it is crucial that they are fitted exactly right,or that link becomes the weak link.Too tight, and the O rings get squashed, and too loose and the grease gets out(if they put any in).Either way that link wears and tight spots develop, causing the rest of the chain to run at the wrong tension and wear faster.Just my theory,I could be talking crap.

Sounds about right to me. I've never got more than 13'000 out of a chain. Never used a scottoiler but always lube myself...er...my chain regular. Ahem.

What chain? I think my Tsubaki's just gone through 12,000- the chain's fine but the aluminium renthal sproket's gasping.
What chain? I think my Tsubaki's just gone through 12,000- the chain's fine but the aluminium renthal sproket's gasping.AFAM kit. Its that thats been fitted after the OEM chain. 24k, then 12500 k from this one. All std sprockets. It was my old chain(24k one) that i run a 14t for 4 months. This chain didnt really have any tight spots, just stretched to the max
Our first chain lasted 32,000 miles, and would probably have done more, but we had it changed when we had our second big service done. That wasn't scottoilered, just lubed after every ride, cleaned down once every couple of months with parrafin, and adjusted as needed.
We were so impressed we stuck with the oem chain and sprockets when we had them changed, and will do again.
I've had best luck with oem sprockets, I have a scottoiler and get 30k-35k out of a set of sprockets & chain, I personally never touch the chain, the only time it sees maintenance & adjustment is when it goes in to dealer every 3500-4000 miles for service and when tires get changed

the oem chain is a DID one isnt it? my chain and sprock's are in A1 condition after 6500miles, the way i'm going the chain should out live me.
i got 24k out of my first chain, now im on my second chain, im on 12k and the front sprocket is screwed, its gonna start eating my chain soon.
but i suppose i am riding it harder on the second chain, than i ever was on my first 24k

16 k on the original OEM chain
Developed a tight spot, got worse very quickly after about 15K
New chain and sprockets fitted (sprockets were probably OK but changed them anyway to prevent wear on the new chain.
New set has done 0.00 miles >> seems ok at the moment

My son had an Afam fitted to his SV about 1500 miles ago. They are reputedly a top chain,so we will see.Am I correct in thinking the OEM Did chains are endless and you have to take the swingarm off to fit them?

no, they come with a link that needs to be rivetted in place using a chain rivetter tool.

My K5 has just coming up to 19,000 miles on it and i'm still on the original chain and sprocket. Only time it ever gets adjusted is when new tyres go on, Unfortunatly this afternoon i am gonna have to adjust it for the very first time myself, i hope this isn't the slippery slope to getting a new one.

The one that was so expertly fitted

it does not pay to replace only the chain, or only a sprocket, to get full life, you have to replace in sets
yup ,i know randy.
but it makes you wonder though doesnt it, if i was to replace the front sprocket, it would cost me a tenner, if it gets another 2k out of my chain, would it be worth it ?
im looking forward to getting a new gold chain to be honest :)
A squid once told me that its the front sprocket that eats chains, and the best there is is a Suzuki OEM. I may invest in one.

Almost. The OEM DID chain is endless, it just has a rivet link included so you can cut off one link and replace the one link with the rivet link if you don't feel like removing the swing arm

So new bikes come with an endless chain fitted as standard?Could that be why their chains last so well compared to subsequent replacements?Come my next chain I'd be seriously tempted to go for an endless DID and remove the swingarm to fit it.Good excuse to grease the bearings as well.

There's a point... Swingarm linkages and bearings never get greased, usually, and it's worth doing. Probably about every 10-20,000 miles or so in fact! Still, I don't think the endless chain specifically lasts better than a riveted one, DID just make good solid, unexciting chains.
