View Full Version : Tour of the Ancients- saturday 7th Oct
Here's a suggestion for a ride, I've tried to give it a theme and called it "Tour of the Ancients"
The route starts and ends at the Castle Court Sainsbury's in Brislington, Bristol
http://www.sainsburys.co.uk/shoppingandservices/storelocator/store.htm?id=795
There's food, fuel, loos and cashpoints etc, and strangely there's a mock castle in the car park which sets the scene for later on...
First point of interest is a white chalk horse site at Cherwell, followed by the stone circle at Avebury, then on to Bratton for another white horse site (biggest and oldest I think). Next up is Glastonbury Tor then heading back to Bristol via Cheddar Gorge.
125 miles total
Here's a pdf map of the route
http://www.box.net/public/a6rjio4mek
Half of these places I've never seen myself so I fancy doing it, any one else up for it? If there's enough interest we can look to set a date.
Hi Xan173.
Sounds like a blast. I have my test on the 3rd of Oct so if was to be after that then count me in. (provided I pass).

I'll come along, as long as my bike does not explode by then!
Absolute earliest for us would be the weekend of the 30th Sept, we're doing bikesafe tomorrow, and next weekend we're at the Afan bikefest (mountain biking).
So, weather permitting, shall we say the weekend of the 7th October? Either Saturday or Sunday.
Morning,
The sunday would work for me.

Sounds good, but isn't Cherwell in Oxfordshire?
Saturday is best for me, I'm usually pretty wasted on Sundays.

It's a fair cop guv, you got me. My mistake, I meant Cherhill.

No problem, I'll have a good look at the map before hand

We'll agree final details nearer the time, for now though it looks like more people want to do the Saturday than the Sunday. That means either the 30th September or 7th October.

Looks good. I'd love to come but Liz and I are off to Ireland on the 30th and I'm on call for work on weekend of 7th... I keep missing rideouts because of work...
Don't change your plans for me. Stick with that date if it works well for everybody else

Oh, and 30th is no good for me, I'll be in Aberystwyth.
Sundays better for me, but I'm sure I could blag a Saturday off football.
I'm a tentative "Yes".
any saturday would do me :D

Sounds a good plan. I'll be up for this as I'm fully booked until the end of September.
And s  d what the weathers doing lets go anyway
this wil be my 1st rideout
whats the plan do some riders fly off at 100mph &all the newbies get left behind :( or do you tend to stick together :grouphug:
if anyone from s.wales is going perhaps we could meet up & all go to the meet together :D

Ride at your own speed and don't be temped into riding faster than you feel comfortable doing.
Its not a race its a rideout
Normally on an organised rideout the route is marked and junctions by somebody from the front of the pack so theres no need to worry about getting lost. Whoever is running the rideout will explain everything before you leave to start the rideout.
Don't worry about it just turn up and enjoy your day out.

Its a bit of both.. I have an ill bike at the moment.. so if I go, I will be taking my time..... no confidence in the thing at the moment.. even eying up a Bandit 1200....

Your bike suits you mate, and not just because it's disabled ;)

Hovis5, there's always a slight chance folks get lost, even with the highly tedious marking of junctions  So...its a good idea to have at least a small idea of the route and have agreed meet up points. Thats what I usually do, say 'We will all meet at 'X'* next after a stop. Then if someones lost they can find there way there in due course. Even the slowest catch up, as breaks are frequent and usually one of the fastest goes the wrong way  . But a good idea to have so waypoints in your head. Just following with no idea where your going can lead to getting lost. But 9 times out of 10 it all goes well.
*I dont actually say 'X' unless the place really is called X, which isnt often
sounds good to me  should be fun, cant wait
I really want to do this rideout this coming weekend but I'm already committed to mountain biking, which I know will be a good crack but damn, this motorcycling lark 'aint half addictive.
I'm looking to agree a go/no-go for Saturday 30th by Wednesday 27th.
All those currently up for the 30th say "Bananas"
p.s. If anyone knows a decent lunch stop en-route let me know - I'm immediately excluding the Red Lion at Avebury on previous experience.

20-09-06, 10:54 AM
Pineapples (weather permitting) for 30th. Lunch nice, not Red Lion tho. Cant stand it there.
I get back in the country early Friday, not sure what the weekend activities are at the moment. Might say bananas then. Can PM contact number and let you know nearer the time.

For lunch I'm going to suggest this place in Cheddar, I've been there before.

Also means if some people want to have an extra bit of play up and down through the gorge twisties they can do while the others chill out.

this all sounds great to me, will be my first big ride out, have done plenty of little ones with just 3/5 people, but i have been craving a big turn out ride for ages, any weekend is good for me, sat better than a sun, but can do either if needed, what sort of time in the day do you think you will be meeting up? i have got a 80 mile ride to get to bristol any way!!! so would like to get there about a hour earlier to chill out a bit b4 the main ride!
do you normaly have people with a 33bhp restriction come out on your rideouts, as as i am sure you can tell i have one, not long left on it now but just want to make sure i wont need to be thrashing to keep up like i normally do with my m8 on his gsxr, not that i dont always enjoy doing that as its good fun but when going places that i dont know all to well i sometimes like to have a nice chilled ride as well!

Don't worry about 33BHP, to be honest most riders on rideouts probably don't use even that much. If you don't know the road taking things a tad easier makes more sense anyway. Fast riding in a straight line is dull for me.
If your riding up from a distance It might be an idea to meet at one of us at the services on the M way. I'm not a bristol bod so am not the ideal one to do this. Thoughts anyone?
There's no motorway between Bournemouth / Southampton and Bristol. Nearest is the M3 but that heads towards London. Better to take the A36 via Salisbury and Bath then on the A4 to Bristol. The Sainsbury's where we start from is *just* off the A4 about 1.5 miles from the City Centre.
Coming in on the A4 Bath Road you'll come down a slight hill to a big set of lights with a Burger King almost in front of you. The A4 continues off to the left into the city centre, but you want to go straight ahead on the two lane road keeping the Burger Kind to your left, past the Shell filling station (you'll now see Sainsbury's on your right). Right at the roundabout and you're in the car park.
Map for you

Given that we'd like to stop for lunch, and actually chat to each other, I think a 10:30 kick off would be about right. That way we can have a few stops before Cheddar and still eat at around 13:30.
I didn't realise our South West catchment area was so big!

sounds like a really good day!
well i only just fall into the south west but as far as i am aware there is not a more local sv group to me!
also i plan to go down poole quay on tuesday, so if any1 wants to go down there as it is the last on and we can meet up, as i am yet to meet a single .org member, so would be good to have a meet and chat b4 this ride out,
i have left a couple of posts on the poole quay thread,
hopefully c ya all some time soon
I must really have my head planted up my **** because I've only just noticed this rideout
I'm 90% sure I'll be able to make this one, it sounds like a great route with added sightseeing thrown in to provide scenic enlightenment (note to self: look at the road not at the nice white horsey :D ).
It'll also be (possibly) one of the biggest gathering of SVs curvies I've seen in a long, long time - yes mine is yellow 8)

This section is huge. Theres a few here like Grinch, Scoobs, Keith, Matt etc who are from down your way. Were sort of a Bristol group, Portsmouth group and S Wales group, with a few others scattered about. Have a look at the stickies and theres some nearer you I think.

Depending on the date I may be up for this but can't do the 30th/1st will be at BSB at Brands. Will watch thread.
For those who asked....
I would like to be in a position to give a Go or No-Go decision on Saturday 30th by the evening of Wednesday 27th. Main factor will be the weather forecast.
If it's a No from me, I have no issue at all if others wish to press on, the route map is there for anyone who wants it.
If it's a Yes, kick off time is suggested as 11:00am
Go for it!, I'm a definite probable.. We should do the route anyway, not everyone will be able to make it but there will be other rideouts.
I would consider a change to the meet point though to somwhere that the MoFos and peeps further a field are used to. Gordano or Morrisons at Cribbs come to mind.
As the old saying goes, can't please everyone..
Just a thought..
I'll probably give this a miss, just got back from Magny Cours....1000 miles in 3 days was a tad sore on the **** :(
Plus im going to strip the ol girl down and give her a good seeing too..phnaar phnaaar

Well I've definately got the go-ahead off the wife (aka 'the boss') for the 30th. Will be travelling down to Bristol with Cheekylemon so if some of you guys are meeting at Morrisons@Cribbs then we'll probably catch you there, otherwise we'll see you at 11:00 at Brislington...that's assuming its going ahead on the 30th.

As already posted the forecast for Saturday is thunderstorms and heavy rain.
For me this means the 30th is a "no-go" as I don't enjoy bad weather biking.
I posted the route, but that doesn't give me any authority over anyone who wants to go ahead. The route is there to be used - just be sure to give feedback and post some pics if you do :)
i'm not going to be able to make it on sat 30th whatever the weather.
hope that those who do go enjoy it.
Alex, lets just postpone the rideout. I don't know anyone who prefers to ride in duff weather, puts a damper on it . Also some bods can't make it.
Going out though on crappy days is a good idea though cos it does improve your road craft, just might be better with a smaller group initially if you have little experience if the cold and wet stuff.
Anyone up for this next week? It would be a shame not to do this route.
as long as its a saturday  .

With regard to the changing the title of this thread to include "WHEN IS THIS HAPPENING??" (alright mate, no need to shout!) I'm not sure who that question is directed at as I made my position clear on Wednesday 27th, as promised.
Also, according to the "posting rideout plans" sticky, this thread would / should become a sticky when a firm date is set. Which it never has.
