if i put a brand new rectifier on & it packs up in a week or 2 what next?

I'm assuming starting issues.

If it's not the reg./rect. then it's going to be either the battery, or some fault somewhere in the loom as far as I know. Loom issues tend to come from wear & tear grinding away the sleeving of the cables, causing a bad earth etc.
