View Full Version : Nekked, is it the way to be??

I have bought yet another curvy SV (don't ask ) ... a nekked one this time ... I have been riding it to work this week, my other SV is the faired model, this obviously is the unfaired.

The nekked one has handlebars instead of clip-on's, so the riding position is different, also less weight on the front due to no bulky fairing. It just feels a totally different bike .... I actually ride it differently too ...

A real bonus of a nekked bike is it keeps the speed down, anything over 60 and you get blown about a bit ... get to a ton and your lid is being rammed through your frontal lobe!!!

Bearing in mind speeding is physically uncomfortable, is having an unfaired bike the way to go?

Oh and will it make me more attractive to the opposite s3x??

You can get used to it all too easily - I have no probs sitting at 80-90 all day on motorways.

I did go down the M3 to Southampton on Tueday in a bit of a hurry as my mum had been taken into hospital, and must have averaged over a ton for 60 miles or so - had a bit of a stiff neck when I got off the bike

At 80ish my lid against my forehead is uncomfortable, at a ton it is unbearable!!! I just don’t know how you do it!!!

That depends on the lid, maybe? My old HJC was a killer on the faired bike at 100, but the Arai's comfy at, er, lets just say more and leave it at that :)

It is a good way of keeping speed down and still feeling like you are having fun, but I want to go fast on the motorways, so naked is not the way forward for me. I find earplugs help me to go 80-95, otherwise the whistling is unbearable. Buffenting up to 100 is okish, but gives me a headache after too long stretches.

After a conversation with Warthog today, all I can say is I'm chuffed I bought the SVS.

I'm able to sit almost bolt upright happily on my private runway at silly speeds, almost no buffeting. Buffeting only really hits my shoulders/neck/head one you stray to around 120+.

I've seen 2 naked blue SVs in the last two days (new and old shape) and I have to say I think they are the better looking when compared to the S model.

Gotta say that I think that a good lookin' naked bike (like the Hornet, for example) looks well cool, particularly when you see some poorly finished a cheap looking half-fairings on some bikes.

I think that you gat used to the wind-blast, but some bikes are better than others in this regard and it also has something to do with the shape/size of the rider.

I don't do much motorway riding so for me a naked bike is perfectly viable, and an upright riding position suits me, too.

But each to their own. Whilst I am tempted by something faired/half faired for my next bike (say a CBF1000 which has an upright postion and an effective half-fairing) I will probably go naked again. CB1300 appeals.

Naked bikes ...... love 'em.

I know … that’s like 3 I have now … I think I need help, I have gone SV crazzzzzzzy!!! :smt119

My rationale (apart from slight insanity ) was that I wanted it as a spare SV trackbike, so I could take it along to trackdays with my track SV. Mibbie even fit it with the wets so that I have an easy option on unsettled days? But mostly as a fallback if something went wrong with #1 bike.

But it seems a bit of a waste of this example … it like has a full MOT n stuff, think I am gonna flog it and get a crash damaged (cosmetic) SVS. After getting the Nekkid, I have found out there are a few subtle differences between the SV and the SVS too, like the 10mm longer swingarm.

Anyhow!!!! Has anyone fitted a ‘fly screen’ type thing to their nekkid???

Go for it! I very much agree each to their own but think most naked bikes look much better than most faired bikes and the CB1300 looks good and is a pleasure to ride even at private runway speeds...

I was just reading RIDE's latest edition which focuses on their 'Rider power' survey where they score naked bikes (along with faired) for wind protection and I want to scream:'If I thought it was important I wouldn't have bought a naked bike!; you might as well mark Wayne Rooney for good looks!'

And yes , okay I do take an 18.5 collar...

Hmm, can't say I've noticed this. Sure top end silly speeds are reduced but I've still had over 120 on a regular occurance (in suitable circumstances of course). 70 is like idling along and not much resistance to wind at all. (on my hornet which has no screen either). Maybe you are higher up on the SV? Ah who knows! :D

Yes it does have a SVS rad, I bought it knowing it had been written off in a past life, but it has been fully repaired and passed several MOTs since!!!

It rides true, nothing (I can tell) is amiss. The engine/gearbox actually seems ‘tighter’ than my Blue 01 SVS (this is a 99) the odometer says 10k miles … I was dubious at first, but have to say by the 'feel' of the motor I might actually believe that!! :)

Hmm, I'm about 5'9 so not too much diff in height there. The only time I had real trouble with my lid (Roof LeMans) was when the speedo reached an indicated 150 on the Hornet.......visor flew off. That hurt. I have not done that speed since (140 though with a new lid and is not so bad). Disused runways are a hoot! 8)

Is the SV more 'sit-up-and-beg' or the clocks taller on the Hornet?

Don't really know abou the unfaired SV, I had the S version but the Hornet position is a little more sporty than a Bandit, if that helps.

The fairing and aftermarket screen on my SVS work really well, the SV is deffo a lot more 'sit-up-and-beg' than the SVS. (this is only an observation, not a complaint, at the end of the day it is that style bike).

I think I like the idea that you know when it is time to back off on the nekkid ... i.e. when your neck feels like it is gonna snap and ya forehead feels like a fatburd is sitting on it!!!!

Yes, I have gone 118 on my naked, and I have a brutal neck (headbanging helps a lot), but 60 miles EVERY day gets REALLY boring and uncomfortable! Andy McNab got used to his torture in Iraq, but it still didn't mean it was fun!

Here you go :) .

It's sitting a little lower than it should due to mods etc but I should have another pic of on other bike later today.

Renthal Ultra-lows if you decide to keep the bike will let you go a bit faster  :) . I'm a wuss but can sit comfortably at 90+ with them. With the originals or the taller Renthal bars, less comfortable for me at same sort of speed.

You could also get some used bars from other bikes which are lower or indeed with different bend.

I dont ride a bike purely for speed, just love blatting round nice twisty A and B roads. I tend to avoid motorways etc because I just find them boring.

IMO a road bike should be unfaired (runs and hides ) (although I spose fairings help if you do a lot of motorway miles) - I dont enjoy riding leaning foward its unatural to me- (years of dressage I spose  )

I do have a little screen which really makes a difference and helps save my neck muscles when on the odd occasion I go a little faster - which I only really do for short periods of time :riding:

Certainly do.

Here some pics of some bars I've tried lined up   . A couple or so more I've tried not there but hopefull you get an idea.

From left SV1000, renthal ultra-lows, SV650(curvy), Honda hornet (99 or 2000).

I quite like the SV1000 one feels a lot more like clipons(just higher) without having to hold your stomach in  but I do over all prefer feel of Alluminium bars :? .

Yeah it's a combination of bend and height really. With regards the SV1000 bars I would say so. Mounted the angle of the SVS clipons are 10 degress and mounted the SV1000 bars are about 5 degrees.

I should be doing a fork oil change and a couple of other stuff today so I'll try and get a pic of the SV1000 bars on the 650.

Nah , only the flat bars(two bends). I don't think I'll like them. If I got a free one maybe I'll try it and see. Apparently the flat bars feel like you are holding onto your fork legs :? so I'm thinking possibly give you two much information but of course like anything possible to get used to it.

Some more pics for you   . First two are Renthal Ultr-lows and rest are SV1000. Not exactly clipons but definitely a bit more of a downward swoop compared to most pulling back towards you if that makes sense.

Sorry about the state of the bike. Proper 'working' bike like :P

I think people are put off a naked because they're worried about the windblast, they think "bloody hell, my head is taking a pounding on my faired wotsit, let alone more of it".

Really though, your head is only getting so much because the fairing and screen are pushing it there! You'd be amazed how easy 70mph is on a naked, I find it the same or easier than my faired bike, there's no turbulence, buffeting and less noise. The neck doesn't have to do so much, your body just kind of relaxes to the wind.

Yeah, things are fine as long as you keep the speed down. One could argue that some slight wind on the torso/head will actually reduce the weight on the wrists making long journeys less painful?!

Talking of fly screens, the Puig Windy (I think that's it's name) is a good one. Luke (Stormspiel) and my dad have both got one and they kind of have a bit of a double bubble thing going on.

There's a picture at Busters, although not a fantastic one see here (http://www.busters-accessories.co.uk/proddetail.asp?prod=MP1482) although that picture doesn't do the screen any justice, it looks a load better in real life.
