View Full Version : Leakin' jacket
Hi Guys
Up until recently my textile jacket has given me excellent protection against the rain. But on my last couple of wet rides I have come home soaked :(
I've had it for a couple of years now. Is it time for a new one? or can they be re-waterproofed?
Cheers
Mitch
You could try the stuff they waterproof suede shoes with...

Pop into your local millets or blacks and pick up some of the Nixwax stuff that you use to wash hiking jackets etc etc with. They sell two sorts stuff that you put into the washing machine and stuff that you spray on afterwards
Wash your jacket first with the techwash from the same manufacturer and then either wash it again with the wash in nixwax or spray on the reproofer.
Its normally used for goretex jackets but I imagine it would work OK with a non goretex textile jacket.
Take all the armour out and use a cool wash on the washing machine.
If you dont want to wash it in the machine then get some baby shampoo and wash your jacket in the bath filled up with warm water and then use the spray on reproofer.
Just dont spray on to much reproofer otherwise you'll end up with white streaks on your jacket.

Have you damaged it at all? I'm assuming its a gore-text jacket, in which case I believe you can reactive the waterproofing bit by washing it (following the instructions). If its damaged and the gore-tex lining has been pierced then there is not a lot you can do IIRC.
My waterproof trousers are now not waterproof at all after my accident. I landed on broken glass and that punctured through the trouser

In fact for best results give the jacket a rinse (NO POWDER OR ANYTHING ELSE) then do as Fizz suggests. It will give an improvement to almost all fabric jackets. You should re-do it whenever the water stops 'beading' on the surface.

What Fizz said.
Thanks for your help Guys :thumright:
If you are going to nikwax your jacket i'd recommend hand washing it in, it uses less. and works out cheaper.

My Belstaff Explorer bagan to leak in the crook of my arms - after 3 years of almost daily use
I used a whole can of that Nikwax spray, but it still leaked next time out
I guess there is some sort of membrane inside the jacket, and once that's worn through, no amount of spraying will restore it

Nikwax do a 2 stage wash-in - techwax and TX.direct.
Works wonders. If the water is gfetting in around the zips and cuffs then there aint a great deal you can do than use overproofs, if it is else where then I suspect he membrane has failed - new coat time!

Same story with my last jacket, went there too. Never was right again.
So depends Mitch, what the problem is I guess.
Most of it is leaking around the arm pit/shoulder area.
By what you guys are saying its a problem area in Jackets. I'll give the wax a try, but sounds like it will ultimately be a new jacket.

If it is Goretex, D-dri, etc type fabric, there is a very fine porous membrane inside that is the actual waterproof bit. The fabric on the outside of the jacket is actually only water resistant. If you wear a rucksack frequently it can damage the membrane as it is so very delicate.
Once the membrane is damaged, it's damaged and no amount of proofing will restore it. You are better off relegating the jacket to fine weather only and getting a new waterproof one.

Yes, I wear a rucksack daily. Oh well, looks like I'll be going shopping at the weekend :D
Any suggestions for a good winter jacket that wont break the bank?

Last Autumn I bought a "summer" jacket, but it had a removable liner. Wore it every day through the winter - it was fine
