View Full Version : 5th gear
tried to watch it tonight and its worse than last series, not sure what it is trying to be but not much motoring. even worse top gear has been posponed until ?
Watched the first half but but turned over to see University Challenge.
VBH is okay as eye-candy (but is no Suzi Perry!), but there was a distinct lack of zap given it is the first of a new series
.....I thought it might just be me, but apparently we are of one mind here. Absolute waste of electricity.........

I agree it was pretty poor
i used to like VBH but shes lost too much weight and looks a little gaunt now, mmnnn Suzi Perry
Only caught the last 20 minutes, that guy doing the DJing annoys the cr@p out of me.
Roll on Top Gear I say (& speedy recovery for the Hamster).

Yeah...... but the top totty was on BBC1 at 9:00pm - Hermione Norris in Spooks
Yeah, I know........nothing to do with motorised transport

).
He was one of he better ones
Nothing wrong with VBH
But the guy that had to repeat everything she said in the dinner what is the point of him?
And the guy driving the robotic golf, I think the golf had more personality. I have series linked it on Sky +, but really can't wait for Top Gear.
Come on Hamster get your **** out of bed you lazy git!
Yeah what was that all about tonight. The show just didnt come together. It all seemed over scripted. A story about a digger squashing a car - WTF?? The plane racing the evo - WTF?? The radio control thing was cool - although you couldnt actually see any of the race action - and then she runs it over at the end - WTF??. It just didnt flow and I cant remember a thing about the cars other than the makes.
Car v plane on a track - I think TG covered that quite adequatley with Clarkson in a Lotus v Apache, wait that sounds a helluva lot more exciting
Tiff N'dell (who is good) didn't even sell the Evo very much just was happy to roll over and give in to a jumped up crop sprayer.
Crushing a car - if it was worth more than £300 or the guy didn't actually own it, now that might have been funny
Missed the first half but they had remote ctrl car racing? Didn't TG do that with real cars (In a quarry 5 Series v Carlton v Scorpio?)
I saw about 15 mins of it. All I thought was it was a very very poor attempt to copy the current format of Top Gear and missing by a good few miles.

A friend of mine was the cameraman on this. Anyone want me to slap him for them?
Glad it wasnt just me then, I thought it was rubbish! I normally watch Top Gear and its a shame when its over, but I was clock watching through the whole program - total dross :(
Who IS Tim Lovejoy ffs?
Fifth gear has never been brilliant, but has always served up what top gear didnt. Normal cars, runabouts, etc, but last night it just seemed ameturish. You have a couple of good presenters, VBH and Tiff, and the grey haired bloke is ok, if slightly dull, hes also on the Gadget show.
I know that top gear is far from ground breaking, but at least, well compared to Fifth gear, is entertaining. I'll stil watch it though :?

I agree, they should stop trying to copy Top Gear and do something original...
Again, totally agree, they are trying to be like top gear, and that isn't the way to go to get new audience.
Real let down last night. Car Vs Plane was awful (anyone note how Lydden seems to change corners (turn 1, to turn 4, turn 3, turn 1 again  ). Complete waste of time.
Audio challange, tbh, i've met that big boofond guy, he done a TV interview on my other half at a car show about modified cars, got aired and everything, but he was a total bell end, couldn't understand at all why people done cars (even though hes in the middle of Silverstones 2nd largest event after the GP, Trax Show (modified cars, 1000's of them)). He was really arrogent like he knew it all, but he really doesn't know anything. Take that car, i mean, THAT kinda music at a Cream event...... :? Really gonna draw a crowd.....
However, that VW Golf, I WANT A GO.... How much fun did that look, being thrown all over the place, by a car driving itself. Well impressed, where can I buy one? They should make a rollercoaster/race track ride from that thing, load it up with people, off you go, weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Like cars.............guess thats why I hate Top Gear!
Previous series of Fifth Gear have been quite enjoyable. Shame that they are apparently getting on the same inane bandwagon as the Clarkson Show.......I mean Top Gear.
I appreciate people like Top Gear, but as Al Murray would say, "They are wrong"
I rarely, if ever, spend more than a couple of minutes watching 5th Gear nefore I get bored and start channel hopping - though Sky One's attempt, Vroom Vroom has at least been entertaining.
Not the most informative of serious motor shows, more like a cross between Top Gear and Brainiac - but entertaining fun nevertheless. :smt102
Was complete n utter bollox if you ask me, No comparrison to TG...and as for Lovejoy....stick to soccer am :D

Didn't watch it as I always seem to forget channel 5. Probably becasue I'm hooked on MotorTV on Cable, and of course men andmotors.
But for those of us who Like VBH, ME INCLUDED

Until last night, I used to enjoy 5th Gear.... It was a little bit different to Top Gear, with more realistic aspirational cars, and Jason Plato was a pretty good presenter.
Last night I decided to delete the series link from Sky+ planner after 20 minutes, but I tortured myself to the end just in case things improved. I think the low point came at the time that Tim Lovejoy (who I'd never heard of until yesterday) announced 'a new feature called 'Wreck my Ride''. Feature? WTF? Feature my hairy white behind.
Top Gear's poor, deluded, village idiot relation now I'm afraid. All right, so TG is often totally unbelievable and the cars aren't ones I will ever be able to afford... but at least it's entertaining.
Have to agree with the majority.
They are trying to be something and trying too hard.
One person that hasn't been mentioned and who I think done a real good job as a presenter - Jason Plato.
What has happened to him.
I felt he was good at driving the cars and giving an informative review.
Tiff, as good as he is, is only good for sideways action.
I will continue to watch it but will FF through the dull bits, if has been recorded.

FG is so God-awful it's not even funny.
The only decent thing they've ever done was to race a 999 against a Lambo, and they even managed to make that quite pedestrian and dull.
The presenters all look like they're on valium and sound like they've swallowed an autocue. I gave up watching last night after just a few minutes, couldn't take any more of VBH's cheesy grins and "look at me, I'm a girl who can drive cars fast, aren't I clever?" attitude. And who's the new guy? It looks like they've poached him straight from Jackanory or something.

Sorry...

It's a poor imitation of TG...
and the presenters (bar Tiff and Vicks), are a complete waste of time... Although, even Tiff gets on my wick now, he's so up his own ar$e...
Roll on TG 8)

All right, so TG is often totally unbelievable and the cars aren't ones I will ever be able to afford
This is why I like it. I dont want to be reminded how dull and humdrum my life is. I want to look and drool over fast expensive sports cars. If I want to look at a 1.8 Ford Focus I can park up in my local Morrisons carpark for 30 minutes or so and see plenty or I can nip to a Ford dealership...

Exactly - I can never see why people moan about the lack of "everyday" cars - who wants to see them?! We want big engines, tyre smoking sideways action and the like, its "entertainment" FFS!

Although the show was slightly disjointed and even more of an autocue jobby than normal I did like like the feature with the RC car and the plane feature as well. I think I'll keep watching...can only get better than the performance last night.

I can't stand the guy's grin, it looks surgically implanted like he couldn't take it off if he wanted. Hurry up Hamster, we need you back!

People write into the car mags and Streetfighters all the time "Why do you always show these incredible cars, instead of specials that people can build in their garage". The response is always "because your car/bike sucks, and if we did a feature on it we'd go out of business. Bring us a homebuild that's not b******s and we'll run it" Same sort of thing I reckon.

Exactly my point - Fifth Gear filled a gap between the unbelievable fantasy world of the TG cars, and the lucky-ass presenters paid to drive them and the mundane day-to-day existence most of us 'enjoy'.
FG has now just become a half-arsed synthetic clone programme using the worst bits and presenting styles of TG, Pimp My Ride, Used Car Roadshow, Driven and others. Tim Lovejoy (I'm still to work out whoever the hell he is) appears to be an arrogant, self-absorbed pr!ck with about as much automotive knowledge as a retarded leopard, and with charisma to match. (As an aside, did anyone else notice his hilariously camp walk, jeans-hitch and sparkly belt on his way to present the 'Wreck My Ride' *cough* 'feature' last night?)
Frankly, I'd rather amputate my left testicle with a bandsaw than sit through another episode.

The bit that really annoyed me last night was the 'feature' on how to get better economy from your car - presented in a 'down with the kids' stylee by some unknown tw*t whose credentials were checked by the other even-lesser-tw*t (Tim Lovejoy).
TH (introducing unknown Tw*t): Now let me get this right - you're a car journalist so you know your stuff?
Unknown Tw*t: Yep
Wow! That's me convinced!!
Then the 'advice' turns out to be things like 'if you don't press the accelerator as hard it won't use as much petrol'.
<sarcasm>
NO!!!! REALLY???
</sarcasm>
Shame cos I used to like VBH but I won't be watching again...
