Was a bit bored Sunday so thought I would make something random in 3d. Chose some ornamental thingy that we have in the house, why do chicks buy so much of this crap? We must have about 20 different candle holder type thingies!!

Anyhoo, took me about an hour to model and then about 3 more hours to get the materials and lighting done. Used 3DS max and Vray to render. Just do this stuff for a hobby at the moment but maybe one day I can get a job in the industry.

Hope you like!

I like it.

I've tried 3DSM before - I can do a fairly good job creating the models, but I'm useless at materials :(

Very Nice - ever tried Rhino3d for modelling?

Purely NURBS based - really easy to use.

Would agree on 3DSMax for Mats, would use Lightwave for final render.

Coo-eck. More interest that I would have thought. So Lukemillar what do you do?

And thanks for the replies. I love Max for poly modelling but am also learning Maya at the moment too. Max os good as it's failry easy to use but Maya is superior when it comes to animation which is what I want to get into. Never used Rhino but used Cinema 4d when I first started out.

Cheers!

Work as a 3D artist! I forgot to say nice render, in the previous post. I find these Max renderers quite interesting (Brazil et al), but I wonder how they would fair in production - particulary when rendering sequences rather than stills :?:

You've done it now my friend. I will be picking your brain for years to come!

I know what you mean, for a hobbyist and for some prod work I am guessing that Max is good enough (seeing as it's mainly used for arch-viz and game production). But then it can do animation too. Checkout www.blur.com (I'm sure you know of them) they exclusively use Max for most of their projects. allthough I'm sure they have a host of custom scripts! What do you use for your profession and in what industry do you work (games, advertising etc)?

I am starting to use Maya as it seems more capable for animation but it's a real steep learning curve, especially the node based architecture and that Hypershade!!

Oh and of course any advice you can give would be most welcome, I'd love to work as a 3d artist. Don't have any formal training in art or design at all but I do enjoy it and have a passion for it.

Cheers,

Dan

If she didn't buy 'so much of this crap' you'd have nothing around the house to make models of now would you? :P Why do blokes bother asking such stoooopid questions on internet forums? Got no men friends IRL to whine about women to so you have to do it online? :P

That pic's really kewl btw. :D

Er thanks.....I think?

BUT...........if she did not go around IKEA buying all these weird shaped things that I have no idea of their purpose, I could model manly things like cars, tanks and naked chicks!

SV_Dan,

Maybe a stoopid question, but in what way is it 3D?
It just looks like a (very nicely lit and well exposed) photograph to me.

No problem! Don't mind helping out at all!

What do you use for your profession and in what industry do you work (games, advertising etc)?

Started off in TV advertising, music videos + long-form TV (2 years), Now working in Feature Films (3 years)

I am starting to use Maya as it seems more capable for animation but it's a real steep learning curve, especially the node based architecture and that Hypershade!!

I use Maya exclusively and have done for sometime. Max, Lightwave etc are fine to learn some of the concepts and principles, but the TV and film industries pretty much use just May or XSI, but mainly Maya. I think games use Max, but I don't really know.

Oh and of course any advice you can give would be most welcome, I'd love to work as a 3d artist. Don't have any formal training in art or design at all but I do enjoy it and have a passion for it.

Training isn't really an issue - One chap who works here as a senior compositor/supervisor used to be in the circus, while another did low-level programming in an unrelated industry, learnt Maya at home and got a lucky break. His was a little luckier than most though. The person I sit next next to has worked in games for the past 10 years, yet has joined us a month ago doing matchmoving (A job that many people do as an entry to the industry). Swings and roundabouts I guess, but one thing is for sure - qualifications don't really mean anything, it's a showreel that counts!

If you want to know anything then, best PM me

Luke

Ah, yes okay this one is quite deceptive. When I say 3d the end result will always be 2 dimensional unless you have a prototyping machine (which carves 3d models). What I mean to say is that I created that image using a 3d computer program, manipulating 3d shapes in a 2d interface until you have the above image. Confused yet?!

Hey I do some design work as a part time job. I'm just starting to do some 3D. I've tried my hand on 3DS Max at home but at work we use Macs and the shame is that the application is not available for Macs! So I use a program called Strata3D which is very simple to use and can also do some rendering. Here's something I did on it for a client of mine...

I love your work man. You're way ahead of me in the materials department.
