View Full Version : Finally have my SV650s
Ok so at 3:30 Wednesday I picked up my new sv650s. I have ridden about 50 miles so far and am just getting used to the bike (coming from an Intruder 125 I found the bike a little ferocious at first).
I am still going slow but so far it’s simply fantastic. If anyone is looking at a SV650s as a first bike I would recommend it.
I am thinking of joining the BAM club in Birmingham. Does anyone have any experience with these guys?
I GOT A SV AS A 1ST BIKE ABOUT A MONTH AGO i was thinking of other bikes, but glad i chose the sv
sorry for shouting

Enjoy. :)
Don't forget to fit the crash bungs before you damage it,not just after.
Wohoo, good news you got your wheels.
I know what you mean about ferosity of the SV. I came to her from a CG125. First ride out I treated her like my CG, until after the first corner, then I decided to actually stay alive!
Ride safe out there, esp as the slippy stuff is a-comin'!

Well done cjt on your choice of bike.
First time I rode my CB-1 (400cc) I well and truly scared myself by snapping back the throttle in 3rd 'to see what she'll do' !!!!!!!!!!!
After having spend 3 months and a CG125 twas a big shock!
No experience of BAM though I'm afraid

Assuming that's Birmingham Advanced Motorcyclists. Go and meet them what have you got to loose.

Good choice :)
I came from a Cagiva Planet 125cc to an SV650 and I know what you mean.
Accidently wheelied it on my first week
It's a great bike and I'm sure you'll get used to it in no time!
(Then be hungry for something even meaner in few years if that)

After riding a 125 for just over a year I took the plunge and did my direct access in February. Shortly afterwards I picked up my SV. I was fairly cautious at first. The bike seemed huge. My confidence grew with time but felt I wasn't cornering as well as I could. I then read an article in MCN about Active Counter Steering, which basically involves applying pressure on the bars in the opposite direction to the corner you want to go around. Wow what a difference this technique makes. Where before I would struggle throwing the weight of the bike into the corner, now it's child's play. The bike goes down faster and turns tighter, so no more tending to run wide.
Now we have wet weather I find myself being very nervous and too rigid in cornering. I don't want the front to break away. Today I had a new tyre fitted. It was raining on the way home and ended up riding through a sea of Diesel near Havant Hypermarket. New tyre, rain and diesel are not a good combination.
I ditched the Dunlop in favour of a Roadtec Z6. So many people have recommended them on this site. I am hoping it will give better feed-back than the Dunlop so I can feel what the front is doing.
Take it easy at first. Remember the SV has a lot of engine braking which can be a good and a bad thing. Learn to bring the speed of the engine up to match the speed of the rear wheel when changing down through the gears, especially if you change down on a bend in the wet. It can make your bum twitch a bit if the back slips mid bend.
Happy riding.
