Aah...I've just got this horrible feeling that my PC is about to go funny.

I would really really appreciate links to any good/safe sites where I can download virus, spyware checker/removal software. Basically any stuff I need to make sure all is well.

Recommendations on actual software to choose would be most welcome.

There is a message(yellow triangle) on screen saying 'system alert: Trojan-spy.win32@mx'. Says to click on a link to doanload official(hmm...) security software but I'm reluctant to do that.

:help: me :)

Cheers
Ben

sounds very very fishy to me! there are alot of pop-up adverts designed to look like warnings
microsoft offer their own free virus scanner
http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx
and an axcellent website for downloads is
http://www.download.com
its been around for years, is spyware free, and has every type of software and review
good luck!

I'd recommend:

AV Software
AVG AntiVirus (Free Edition) (http://www.grisoft.com/doc/products-avg-anti-virus-free-edition/lng/us/tpl/tpl01)

Personal Software Firewall
ZoneAlarm (Free Edition) (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp?dc=12bms&ctry=GB&lang=en&lid=nav_za#1)

Never had a problem with these installed.

Also worth running ccleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/download/) to clean up a lot of unwanted crud.

Adaware the lavasoft product that TSM has linked to is my personal favourite for spyware remover.

I use Mcaffe for my antivirus, and I just use the firewall that comes with XP. I've never had a problem yet.

I would also recommend that you pay regular visits to Microsoft and use the Windows update service to keep your operating system up to date. It'll help stop virus' exploiting security vulnerabilities. Make sure you have the latest service pack on your PC as well.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Much appreciated.

Okay right now I've got Ad-aware, Avast Anitivirus and AGV and firewal is from Blueyonder.

Ran the AGV antivirus which cam eup with one result. Then ran Avast which found nothing. So far so good I reckon :)

What I can understand is why every time I run Ad-aware there always seems to be something to delete. The latest scan results were

MRU list-poses no threat
Some tracking cookies with a TAC rating of 3
win32.trojandownloader.zlob with a tracking rating of 10

What do the above mean :?

Computer seems to be okay apart from the fact that the web site "http://theuptodatesecurity.net/" seems to have decided it must be the home page :x . Tried changing it using Tools/internet options but no joy. Every time I try to open a new explore window it comes up and opens a pop-up warning that says

"win32.wyzor.fk@yf is a virus that affects files with .exe extensions , blah ,blah :x and advicing me to click to download approved official security software(yeah right?).

Sorry if a bit long winded like but I do appreciate all the help given so far

Cheers
Ben

EDIT: Also got Ccleaner installed but to be honest not sure about what to allow it to delete so didn't follow through to the end. I'll have another look but any tips welcome. It just looks like with it there is a chance of making a major ****up with regards to deleting stuff you shouldn't have :?
