Morning,
I'd never seen one of these pint sized road racers before, but they seem to be lovely bikes. All the "now" goodies; sexy swing arm, digital dash, upside down forks and very natty Y spoke race style wheels.
I'm wondering how Aprilia can outfit this bike so well when the SV, for all it's many great strengths, seems so old hat? Is the RS125 the bargain it appears on paper? Ta.

Tis a lovely looking bike... 1 thing...
they like to seize even if you do run them on good quality two stroke oil, they need properly looking after lots of TLC to keep them trouble free.
My brother had one he loved his. I think Scoobs had one to.
They aint cheap. They are what? £3500? Thats not much cheaper than an SV, and its less of a bike in reality. It may have bling bits, but the engine is small, and simple to produce, and most of all its Italian, so WILL go wrong.
Id prefer an RS250, now thats a bike

I did. It got the best of everything and was well warmed before each ride. Still went ping. Too highly strung, 2 stroke and Italian. Nuff said.

2-strokes are comparatively cheap to build, far far simpler mechanically. Easier to make nice trick wheels etc for a bike that weighs less than a fag packet too :)
I want an RS250 as well. No, actually I want the rumoured 550 4-stroke road bike, mmm.

Some lad at Kingston Uni has one, brand new. Its gorgeous...i wish i had one, but then i dont want to rebuild the engine after 10k miles (£750 jobbie or something). Plus an SV sounds better. But dosnt smell as good...
Oh
I want more money to buy gorgeous bikes :(

What you save on purchase price you will spend (and then some) on:
- Extra servicing for regular piston / ring changes
- Repairs when the thing seizes up
- Recovery (as it will seize when you're at the farthest point from home on a ride out)
- Alternative transport for the time when it's off the road.
Thats my 2p worth :?

One of my first bikes was an unrestricted RS125. It was a lovely looking bike, but truth be told, took a lot of looking after and, was a pig to ride on the road. Dont be fooled by the fact that it is still only a 125. Whilst incredibly fast for such a small engine, it had trouble keeping up with my fathers shaft driven Honda 500 let alone an SV.

i wouldnt really call it a bargin comared to other 125cc bikes.
esp for a couple of quid more you can get yourself a brand new Sv compared

Comparing the price of the baby Aprilia's to that of the Sv is just completely missing the point. The Aprilia gives top notch spec and so damn close to a race bike but yes the odd hiccup is always likely. It's the buzz of owning such a bike that cannot be calculated in currency.
If I had the spare cash floating around right now, an RS250 would be purchased in the blink of an eye.

dont get me wrong, thats probably top of my shopping list if i have the cash., but i dont
horses for courses and all that.
If I was a teenager starting out again I know what I would be dreaming of - The SV wouldnt even be considered (yet). The bike is high strung top spec totti!

I hope to be able to own an rs at some point.
CERTAINLY not a machine to use as your sole mode of transportation but they are damn fun to ride. Well 2 strokes anyway.

I've had 3 RS' in my time, and i loved them to bits (quite literaly) seized one twice within 7k miles, but it is well worth it. Once i get my busa i'll probably end up trading in the SV for another RS125. to be honest the performance of the SV isn't far greater than the RS. The 'prillia could easily out break and out corner the SV and it doesn't lag too far behind in speed and acceleration. Ohh, and they are gorgeous machines tae.
But doesn't smell as good...
That's the main thing I love with 2 strokes. The rich scent of oil as they scream on by. It absolutely makes the event when watching the 250cc strokers at Olivers Mount.

Sorry mate, don't agree. My RS was pretty modded and putting out a genuine 35bhp. Granted, it would corner better than the SV but was nowhere close on acceleration. Excellent performance for a 125, but struggled to keep up with my dads old Honda 500.

I agreed with Godikus all to the point that he suggested it would stick with an SV for pace. Nah good as they are they cant do that. They take a lot longer to get up to their top speed and do not have the drive out of corners that the SV offers. 8)
Ok quick "marketing" post here (but it is for my rs!"
Its on ebay, item number: 280036586224, nice little winter project.

According to my quick google, the RS125, derestricted, does 0-60 in about 6.5 seconds and runs a quarter in around 15.2 seconds at 85mph.
The SV, standard, does 0-60 in around 3.7 seconds and will run a quarter in 11.87 at 112mph.
Pretty big difference, there. Obviously it's ridiculous to compare, just to put in perspective the 125's performance.
Now, by comparison, my Virago 125 would do 0-60 in about 90 seconds :)
my GS125 would do 0-60 in . . ..
hang on, it only did 55mph

I once managed to speed on a motorway on the Virago. Well, according to the speedo anyway, it was probably only about 60-65. That was one of the crowning achievements of that bike :) Took about 20 seconds to get from 70 to 71, on a slope... Then, about 5 minutes later it suddenly cut out and refused to start again for an hour, thought I'd killed it...
Those were the days. I'd have been delighted to get those 3 points :)
